Frisbee golf sign
June S.

Lovely park we discovered by accident while on some misadventures today. Even the two lane road to get here was pretty. We parked at the north entrance lot, which had plenty of parking. The women's restroom did not have soap (I'm freaky about soap in the restroom). There are 2 covered picnic pavilions with grills and a large playground right by the lot. In the middle of the field is a pond that's nice to look at but not much else. If you continue down the paved trail to the west you'll see a frisbee golf goal in the woods along the trail. If you go past the goal on the trail you will eventually see a sign for the nature trail. It criss crosses with the frisbee golf trails and isn't marked, but whatever. The worst that could happen is you get hit in the head with a frisbee. There were people playing around us and we're alive. There is a dog park on the south side which we didn't look at since we don't have a dog, but this is a really nice, clean, sizeable, walkable park.

Chapel Hill's newest and second-largest community park has lots to offer: 72 acres of soccer fields, walking trails, a Frisbee golf course, picnic facilities, playgrounds, basketball courts, an inline hockey court, and more. What brought me here today, though, was the dog park. There are actually two dog parks here: one very large one for the "big dogs," and another, smaller one for the dogs that think they're big. These are some of the nicest dog parks I've seen. They have an assortment of toys lying around for the borrowing, waste bags, water fountains, lots of benches to sit in the sun and the shade, woods AND dirt to dig in, etc. The people are friendly without being obnoxious and they're very good about picking up after their animals. Elsewhere in the park, the kids run around playing on the fields and the playground, the Frisbee golfers get lost in the woods, and people just come and hang out with their neighbors. Very nice. Our tax dollars were well spent on this one, people.

I'm reviewing the dog park portion of the park, which is wonderful. The park is split into two sections, medium-large and small dogs. In each section there are benches, grass sections, tress and mainly sandish material in the big park. The owners are responsible and very nice. My dog had a great time there, they even have their own water source for the pups to cool off. It's kind of far from where I live so I won't get to go as often as I like but I wish I could! Brought home a tired, workout and happy dog. Love this place!

Busy work lol

Most popular time is definitely before 10:30am. But even after that there are always pups there. I can't speak for the small dog park, though. We have never had a problem here all dogs have been very friendly as well as the humans :) The park is very large and has lots of room for your dog to wander and explore. There is a small trail that circles around the inside of the park. Two baby pools, plenty of running water, and tons of benches! The city does a great job of cleaning it and maintaining it

The folks who bring their dogs here are for the most part attentive and friendly, and both sides have a shelter with a picnic table or benches and chairs as well as benches along the fenceline. There are plenty of dispensers with good-sized, sturdy "mutt mitts" and trashcans dispersed around the fenceline for picking up after your dog. On weekends there's usually a well-attended 10am meetup on the small dog side. The medium-large side is huge with loads of room for unobstructed ball/frisbee throwing and a path that traverses around the inside of the fence. Parking is usually good except when there are soccer games on the fields at this end of Southern Community Park. We often park at the north end of the park and walk the easy quarter mile over to the dog park (there's a paved trail), and you may have to do this if there are soccer games going on. If there has been a lot of rain, the lower end of the medium-large side has an area that gets really muddy and should be avoided if you don't want your dog getting into the mud. We enjoy going here several times a week. It's an excellent place to get some good off-leash social time and exercise for your dog.

They have great amenities in making this a wonderful park. But.....way too much debris all over the park. Everywhere you looks you could see litter and it looks like it has been there for awhile. I understand people at times throw their trash anywhere when done with it. Too bad for that way of thinking. But.....the park division should monitor the park for debris and dog poo on the artificial soccer fields. There is a sign that says no dogs on artificial turf, but who reads anymore. You can access this park at the Chatham Park entrance off of THOMPSON St in Pittsboro. Great little venues for kids that keep their attention. The crawl through house is a hit. Also the nature area with artificial grass is cool. Kids can crawl through a little tunnel. Of course the "Splash Pad " is the hit. Cool off under different designs with a purpose. To get you wet and cool you off. . That is not all !! A large Dog Park to let you furry kid run and play. If you want to make a picnic of this, you can . Covered area with picnic tables, out areas with picnic tables and charcoal grills. Walk area around the park in a semi circular fashion. You can view the park from the walk area. Also Pittsboro's answer to Stonehenge. I don't think these rocks are aligned in a astronomical way, but they are indigenous and check out the veins of Jade. That Stonehenge area has wire grass and I would recommend something to cover your feet. Oh almost forgot. Bathrooms are also in the big building with the covered picnic area. Even if Mother Nature does dribble on you. You can make your way to the covered area. All in all this is a great park for everyone. My Granddaughters approved of it.

I will say there's enough natural elements to distract from the huge concrete sidewalk extending the entire length of the path, which ends up emptying into a community and another fitness path (has outdoor equipment stops) on one end and a pasture of wild flowers (mostly common milkweed for monarch butterflies) roughly midpoint. At the pasture the trail is definitely NOT paved and rather rough to navigate. If you have problems walking, be cautious, yet try experiencing it in the spring and late summer to catch glimpse of the butterflies and their caterpillars eating away before their chrysalis stage. There's a small parking lot at the beginning of the trail big enough for 20 cars. This includes a couple handicap spots. I've been there twice now on the weekend and I've lucked out to find a few spots open. Once you park DON'T head for the tempting metal bridge. Go in the opposite direction where you'll see the regulations sign. Then you'll know you're in the right spot!
