And saw there was no reviews, tips, or photos. So I drove to it, passing it a couple of times before I realized, it was a dog park, on the edge of the park, across from the cemetery. Creepy. I never been to a dog park before, so I didn't know what I was looking for. It was two separate fenced in fields, about an acre each. One field is for small and older dogs. The other side was for large dogs. That's great because my puppybutt has a Napoleon complex. There were benches, waste receptacles, and water fountains inside of each. You must register before entering the park. It didn't take long to do. You can let your dog off it's leash, if you choose. I did so because there wasn't any other dogs inside the one I went into. However, you must be within ear shot of your dog, in case you need to call out to them. Kind of like a child at a playground. You want to be mindful. Most of the rules are common sense, but again, be mindful that you're not the only one there. All dogs entering must wear a collar (non spiked or choke), show tags, and rabies tags. Must be leashes entering and exited. No females dogs that are in heat. A max of 2 dogs per person. No children under the age of 16 without adult accompanied. No food, drink, or glass containers, no smoking, no alcohol, and no food are allowed inside. No aggressive dogs. I've been here a few times and it's always been pretty peaceful. Twice there weren't other small dogs present. That's probably because I went during the week, while 1st shifters were still at work. If you have a dog and are looking for a bark park, this one is a pretty good one to visit. Haven't had a bad experience yet and my dog seems to love the space.

There are tennis courts, pickleball courts, swimming and diving pools, outdoor rock climbing walls, a gym, an outdoor basketball court, disc golf, beach volleyball, a clubhouse, playground, three shelters (pavilions) with wooden tables and benches, and more. Actually, it's more like a private park than a private country club. In terms of how nice The Farm is, I'd say it's on a public park level. When I saw The Farm is private, I was thinking it would be nicer and perhaps higher-end. Instead, it felt more like a small city park that happens to be private. My wife has been here multiple times for various UNC events. I attended one of the events with her. It took place at The Farm's clubhouse, the adjacent pavilion, and the playground. It was a family-friendly event. Parents brought their children who played on the playground. Food and drink were set up inside the clubhouse's kitchen. The clubhouse and overall grounds and facilities that I saw were modest. The shelter had string lighting lining the ceiling. The tables had a lot of what looked like dried-up paint/finger paint on them, presumably from kids' activities. It makes sense since the playground was right next to us. Also nearby was a bunch of bamboo which made for a good backdrop for group photos. During our Saturday afternoon visit, I saw people playing beach volleyball and the pool(s) looked busy. The Farm is located east of UNC campus, not far from the Chapel Hill-Durham border. It's off 54, accessible via Barbee Chapel Rd, just past UNC Finley Golf Course. It's due south from the Rizzo Center (south side of 54).

One thing I find interesting about this park is that it is basically split into two sections that you would almost think are two different parks instead of one. The southern half of the park features a basketball court ( 2 court layout, picnic tables) and a weird sort of playground. You have to see it to understand what I mean. Its far from your traditional playground but its still pretty cool. Sadly the park has been abused and does have a good amount of trash laying about and even more of it in the nearby stream. As a result of the abuse the bathrooms near the play ground are almost always locked and the drinking fountains don't work. On the plus side a BSA Venturing Crew (Crew 505) has just recently adopted the park so with any luck the park will start to get cleaned up and better taken care of.

Perfect for younger kids with their low "ropes" options and swings a step away. Walk down the trail a bit and you'll run into a covered picnic area, bathrooms with water fountains, two basketball courts, and while not lit, they do look well maintained. Across a tiny creek and bridge you'll finally run into a large baseball field. I know it all sounds great and while parts of the park look great, I don't think the location makes for the safest children's spot. The park is located in a residential neighborhood, however it divides Lakewood (a lower-income neighborhood) from the backside Forest Hills (a higher income neighborhood). On a Monday afternoon around noon, the parking lot was empty, and I've rarely seen people here. However, evidence around the basketball court (empty beer cases, bottles, boxers even) prove that it's well used. I'm not an expert with bullet holes, but it also looks like several holes are in the door of the woman's bathroom and even a park sign. YIKES! Having already had a run-in with a shooting down the street at Forest Hills Park, seeing this didn't give me the desire to rush back. It really just puts a knot in my stomach, knowing that the city has put money into making this a desirable park, and seeing first hand that something dangerous has gone down here, where children are encouraged to play. However, Elmira Avenue Park could make for a convenient place to park and run. There's direct greenway access to Rocky Creek Trail, which will lead you to about the 2 mile point on the ATT. What makes me second guess this park is it's location. There are so many regularly trafficked very safe feeling parks, and Elmira isn't one of them. It's proximity to a lower socioeconomic demographic leaves me feeling slightly on edge and very aware of my surroundings. Overall, this wouldn't be a park I'd spend a lot of time at, but makes for a good spot to know about if you need to stop along the ATT in case of bathroom, water or parking needs.

If you don't have kids, the high point of the park is probably the two tennis courts on the adult side of the park. If you do indeed have a few little rugrats, the most attractive asset of the park is most likely the playground complete with giant tortoise on the opposite side of the park. Aside from during the cold of winter, this half of the park is always teeming with parents and their little kiddies. Personally, I can't even handle a dog at this point in time so I probably won't be venturing over to that side of the park anytime soon. I'm not a tennis player, but the courts here do seem to be in decent shape and are usually unoccupied. If you're reading this, don't you dare come and swarm "my" courts because I just might take up tennis any day now and when I do I want a free court to make a fool of myself on! Despite my ineptitude in the tennis realm, I do enjoy playing a bit of basketball (also not well) and thus have done so here at Oval Park. The court here is not in terribly great shape and is only half-court. To make up for the lack of the other half of the court, the architects behind this park seemingly decided to jack the rim up to 11 feet. Thanks, guys. Come on, though--it's street ball! You deal with the conditions. As mentioned by Christina G., the park hosts monthly picnics and mini food truck "rodeos" during the spring and summer, which are obviously pretty sweet and a good excuse to get outside and enjoy the local 'hood!
