It is well maintained and seemingly lightly trafficked because it is tucked away in a Durham neighborhood. We visited over a holiday weekend and saw only a handful of other families, most of whom were in the children's play area. The majority of people were wearing masks and so it felt very safe to visit during the pandemic. The parking lot is small but due to the light traffic, it didn't pose a problem when we visited. This is a great park to visit with children, dogs and/or adult friends and family members especially as other outdoor attractions in the area are seeing heavier traffic due to the pandemic. We brought a badminton set and had plenty of room to set up and play in the large field near the shelter. This would be a good place to throw around a football or play fetch with a pup.

However, in all fairness, Garrett Road Park offers your typical park needs, although somewhat sparse. They've got a NEW modern, metal playground, picnic shelter and tennis courts. There's a lovely pound [no fishing allowed] and plenty of parking. Since it's located across the street from Jordan High School, I would assume it gets a lot of activity, although as of yet, I've hit it while school is in session and haven't seen any kids playing hooky here. Overall, a decent park, but since there are so many better park options in the area, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this one.

Oddly enough, the park is located on the site of one of Durham's old sewage treatment plants, three large green tanks remain at the park reminding patrons of its pervious use. However, when Martin Luther King Parkway was built, the city changed the old sewage treatment center into a wetlands area and thus the park was born. Whether you're looking for a running trail, park benches, picnic benches, an outdoor grill, a butterfly garden, a field for an sport you can think of or even bocce ball courts, Sandy Creek Park has got you covered. Since the park now has a wetlands, be warned that it can be muddy after rainy days. The field leads into the wetlands and the 10 foot wide (0.65 mile one way), paved running path can also accumulate sand and mud after heavy rain. However, that is that only downside to the area. Otherwise, it's quite, great for bird watching, a picnic or even an outdoor party. You might even spot other wildlife including beavers, deer, otters, coyotes, a red fox or turtles. I noticed it's a common lunch spot for professional around the area. On my visit on a Friday afternoon about 12:30p, there were about five to six cars that came and went, most people stayed in their cars being that it was about 40 degrees outside, but I braved the cold and ate on the covered patio that seats at least 32 people (four tables of eight). You won't want to miss this peaceful, hidden park and I can't wait to return in the spring when the butterfly garden is in full swing! I could definitely see myself grilling out here with a group of friends, although the park does close at dark. They also do have restroom facilities, however they are closed during the winter.

The first time I went was with Audubon for a walk and saw red headed woodpeckers and others. The downside and why it gets minus one star- the ease of flooding in this area means some trails may not be accessible after a heavy rain. Also during warmer months the mosquitoes are insufferable even with bug spray. But there are trails for dogs, bikers and walkers.

The multi-purpose field had a group playing soccer and I'm sure that the fenced dog park had it's fair share of action as well. The park is located right outside of downtown Hillsborough, drivable from downtown but walkable from the Riverwalk (paved trails that meander through "forested" areas along the Eno River; perfect for strollers and/or runners alike!) The park includes 0.3 miles of this Riverwalk greenway and links to downtown (by Weaver Street Market). The park stands on about 20 acres and also includes a ball park and bathrooms. Two separated playgrounds for children ages 2-5 year olds and one for the 5-12 year olds. The playgrounds sit on mulch and receive little to no sun. But you're in luck because you might be able to beat the sun with the parks hours, opening daily from 8 a.m. to a half hour after sunset.

Had we had mountain bikes, would have continued on to the dirt path that goes on for another 5 miles onto private property but that area is open to walkers and mountain bikes (read the signs at the far end of the RiverWalk to access this area). Gold Park has something for nearly everyone and is "thoughtful" in some of its design, such as the Bee Hotel, which is made up of natural materials with spaces for bees to hunker down and feel safe. There is a good sized dog park, baseball field, playground, large, grassy area, rest rooms, soda/water machines, water fountains, and what is especially nice are the numerous entrances from/to the town of Hillsborough for those without cars. Come take a walk along the Enos River and find the gorgeous gazebo-like structure made entirely of saplings that looks like it grew up from below the ground, and erected by 150+ volunteers. It's a beauty!

They have great amenities in making this a wonderful park. But.....way too much debris all over the park. Everywhere you looks you could see litter and it looks like it has been there for awhile. I understand people at times throw their trash anywhere when done with it. Too bad for that way of thinking. But.....the park division should monitor the park for debris and dog poo on the artificial soccer fields. There is a sign that says no dogs on artificial turf, but who reads anymore. I seen at least 8 dogs on the field and one at the far end doing his business , off the leash, no owner in sight to pick up the poo.

The owner couldn't control their dog and when I was finally able to get the attacking dog off my dog the owner did nothing and her dog again got a hold of my dog while we were trying to leave. once I was able to get the dog off my dog again. I took my dog away from the park to check her injuries (and mine from have to put fingers in that dogs mouth) while doing so the owner left without waiting to address the situation. what a mess. oh and while all this was happening. Two other dog owners just sat and watched.
