Garrett Park houses my longtime go-to tennis courts when the private court at our apartment complex, the Berkeley at Southpoint, was occupied. Now we've moved, so we lost that private court, but now this park is basically in my backyard. The newish hardcourts and nets here are a massive improvement over the rundown, rickety stuff that was there before. The lighting is spotty on the second and fourth courts, so I prefer to play during the day.
Right now there are tons of renovations going on here: lots of orange warning barriers all over the joint. I'm looking forward to see what they do with this place. The park has never been more than a brownish, overgrown, rundown-looking picnic area for lost souls, the stagnant pond a mosquito hatchery, but now it looks like they're going to fix it up. Exciting!
I've never actually seen anyone picnicking here, but I have noticed lots of folks walking their dog friends here. I'd definitely check for ticks after that romp, though! I recommend that anyone who visits wear OFF! and a hat or scarf. But, hey, it's your funeral. (Whoa, easy there, Helena K.)
Just down the hill from the courts you'll find City Beverage, where I recommend you head for a killer selection of beers on tap and something delicious to eat. I mean, if you're going to restore those calories you just burned, I can't imagine a better place to do it. read more
