It is still clean (a positive) and there are more people who live downtown now so it's slightly busier on the weekends. However, there is still little seating or shade. Also, there's not even a fountain or water bowls provided for dogs so BYOB for your pup. I really hope that with so many things changing in downtown Durham the City will put some funds into improving this dog park.

Most popular time is definitely before 10:30am. But even after that there are always pups there. I can't speak for the small dog park, though. We have never had a problem here all dogs have been very friendly as well as the humans :) The park is very large and has lots of room for your dog to wander and explore. There is a small trail that circles around the inside of the park. Two baby pools, plenty of running water, and tons of benches! The city does a great job of cleaning it and maintaining it

The folks who bring their dogs here are for the most part attentive and friendly, and both sides have a shelter with a picnic table or benches and chairs as well as benches along the fenceline. There are plenty of dispensers with good-sized, sturdy "mutt mitts" and trashcans dispersed around the fenceline for picking up after your dog. On weekends there's usually a well-attended 10am meetup on the small dog side. The medium-large side is huge with loads of room for unobstructed ball/frisbee throwing and a path that traverses around the inside of the fence. Parking is usually good except when there are soccer games on the fields at this end of Southern Community Park. We often park at the north end of the park and walk the easy quarter mile over to the dog park (there's a paved trail), and you may have to do this if there are soccer games going on. If there has been a lot of rain, the lower end of the medium-large side has an area that gets really muddy and should be avoided if you don't want your dog getting into the mud. We enjoy going here several times a week. It's an excellent place to get some good off-leash social time and exercise for your dog.

Willow just wanted to meet the other dogs, explore everything and smell all the smells.

They even have a take one leave one poop bag dispenser about every 50 ft along the fence line. Parking is a little bit away but the walk does you good. But for some reason you have to go through the big dog park to get back to the little dog park which can sometimes makes for some very interesting interactions!! They have great amenities in making this a wonderful park. But.....way too much debris all over the park. Everywhere you looks you could see litter and it looks like it has been there for awhile. I understand people at times throw their trash anywhere when done with it. Too bad for that way of thinking. But.....the park division should monitor the park for debris and dog poo on the artificial soccer fields. There is a sign that says no dogs on artificial turf, but who reads anymore. I seen at least 8 dogs on the field and one at the far end doing his business , off the leash, no owner in sight to pick up the poo.

I took my dog away from the park to check her injuries (and mine from have to put fingers in that dogs mouth) while doing so the owner left without waiting to address the situation. what a mess. oh and while all this was happening. Two other dog owners just sat and watched.

The park includes two gated basketball courts, a grill and small picnic shelter with picnic tables. Field lights and eight gated tennis courts with bathroom and water fountain. A small playground which is slightly separated from the rest of the park (by trees). If you don't live ON the American Tobacco Trail, it might seem overwhelming to find an access point. However, Elmira Avenue Park could make for a convenient place to park and run. There's direct greenway access to Rocky Creek Trail, which will lead you to about the 2 mile point on the ATT. What makes me second guess this park is it's location. There are so many regularly trafficked very safe feeling parks, and Elmira isn't one of them. It's proximity to a lower socioeconomic demographic leaves me feeling slightly on edge and very aware of my surroundings. Overall, this wouldn't be a park I'd spend a lot of time at, but makes for a good spot to know about if you need to stop along the ATT in case of bathroom, water or parking needs.

I've done at least 2 of their trails with the last being the Pott's Branch Trail. Pott's Branch is one of their easy trails at 1.3 miles. I recommend you wear tight/well fitting sneakers or boots as there are a lot of roots on the trails and you don't want to slip. Umstead does a great job of marking the trails and there were even paper maps available.
