Godbold Park is a nice park in Cary with a variety of amenities (tennis, skate park, dog park). It's not as expansive as nearby Bond Park, but is less crowded and still a really great recreational spot. It's accessible via Greenway trails, and also has a nice sized parking lot. We come mostly for the dog park. Like Durham dog parks, Cary requires a membership to validate vaccinations and pay for park maintenance (mulch, poop bags, water, etc.). The Cary membership fee is much higher ($60/year for two dogs - Durham's was more like $10-15 per dog), but the parks are well maintained and if you're a frequent visitor, it's well worth it. Park access is regulated by a key card, so if you don't have a membership, you're not able scan in at all (Durham parks tend to be more of the honor system). Unfortunately, you only get one key card per family no matter how many dogs you have on the membership. If you're visiting the area and don't want to sign up for a membership, I recommend checking out Raleigh dog parks (ex. Dix Park) - I believe no membership is required there. I do wish Town of Cary has more options - there are currently only two parks. Godbold is nicely maintained, and a decent size, but not the biggest or nicest park we've been to. The large dog area is a really nice size, well mulched, and has automatic water bowls which are a nice touch. The small dog side is unfortunately really small, so if you have an active small dog, they don't have much room to run. Like all dog parks, there's always some risk of something negative happening. We've lived in multiple cities and been to over a dozen dog parks - all dog parks run the risk of having one bad apple ruin the experience of others, and in our experience, the bad apple is usually oblivious that they're jeopardizing the experience of others. It's unfortunate, but this really isn't a reflection on any specific park. Dog parks can still be a wonderful way for dogs and humans to socialize if you're attentive to your dog, and proactive about keeping an eye on other dogs (especially if they have oblivious owners). There are usually plenty of warning signs and lead up before something bad happens - luckily, there's lovely greenway trails for a nice walk if you happen to hit the park at a bad time and want to wait for the crowd to change. read more

I used to like going to this dog park but there's a certain group that frequents the park the same time every afternoon. They're not a very friendly bunch or welcoming of others and they hardly watch their dogs as they chit chat away under the pavilion. My best description of them... snooty and entitled. There's one lady of the group that's super loud that likes to call out other people's dogs for being dogs and hardly keeps an eye on her own dog. I've been paying the $40 yearly fee for a few years now but I find myself deciding not to go to the park just to avoid that group. Guess, I should just find a different park to frequent instead of paying the fee and not being able to feel comfortable going to the park whenever I want. read more

Only been a few times so far for the trails and dog park (need to apply online; the Town of Cary will give you a call to receive payment for the card in order to use the dog park) but every time I've gone it's been a pleasant experience. Trails - well maintained, nice for walks with the dog Dog Park - I try going when I don't think there will be too, too many dogs since I heard from previous reviews some owners don't pay too close attention if things get rowdy. They have provided water bowls, doggie bags, and trash bins as well as seating for the owners in both the small and large dog areas. Also I've noticed - perhaps some owners left them for others to use - there are also some well loved tennis balls to play with if you don't bring your own toys. With the rain, it does get to be where you may not want to bring your dog there since the mulchy muddy combination gets intense. All in all, looking forward to getting back there once it dries up! read more

My boyfriend and I just moved to Cary and purchased the $40 yearly pass to the dog park. Godbold Park park itself is nice. This review is solely for the dog park. Tonight our lab puppy, who is almost 6 months old, was having a great time burning off his energy with a couple of other dogs. After awhile we left the dog park to go explore and walk around the rest of the park. Maybe an hour later we went back to the dog park. Two dogs that hadn't been there the first time became fixated on my puppy. After following him around for awhile one of them suddenly began pinning him while the other went for his back legs and belly. My boyfriend pushed the dogs off and picked our puppy up so we could leave. The dogs kept jumping to get at my pup so my boyfriend began kneeing them every time they jumped. FINALLY one owner came over and had the audacity to accuse us of "kicking" his dog. He grabbed his dog and yelled to another owner that we were kicking the dogs. I love how we were accused of kicking when the other owners clearly weren't watching their pets and were on the other side of the dog park. Only after the dogs were pulled away were we able to leave. I have the year long pass but I will definitely think twice before bringing my pup back to that park; especially if other dog owners are going to be so negligent. read more

Excellent, clean dog park! It is in a great location, has a water spigot outside the gate, a self-fill water bowl inside the park, benches to sit on, and ample room for dogs to run around. Occasionally the gate is broken and there are holes dogs dug that turn into mud pits but the park employees are usually quick to fix these issues. There are two sections of the dog park, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. It does cost an annual fee to utilize and requires that your pet has their required vaccinations, which is good. Overall, I enjoy visiting this dog park and as long as everyone monitors and picks up after their dog, it stays clean and safe! read more

Swings for toddler and big kids - check. Monkey bars - check. 'Twisty slide' - check Water fountains, benches, & bathrooms - check Walking distance to the Starbucks - check (actually, make that a triple latte check!) Accessible from the Blackcreek Cary bike/hiking trail - check For the amount of space it occupies, this park packs quite the punch. If your kid is 10, they might get bored in the playground, but that's what the basketball and bike ramps are for I suppose. We can walk the brood here from the house, and that's just priceless. If you're coming from the greenway and are on the wrong side of Cary Parkway, beware you'll have to cross 4 lanes of traffic. Muy peligroso for the kids and adults. read more

What a ridiculous review below. Personally, I am GLAD Cary restricts use of their dog park. It ensures that all dogs entering the dog park are properly vaccinated. Another thing I love about this dog park is it separates the area for small dogs and large dogs. I don't have to worry about my 15-pound dog having an unfortunate run-in with a much larger dog and getting accidentally hurt. Is the price a little high? Perhaps, but that money pays for upkeep of the park. It's certainly one of the cleanest dog parks I've been to. You're essentially paying 10 cents a day to have a well-kept, safe place for your dogs to play. I suppose they could run it like the park in Millbrook, but after several bad experiences there I'm okay with paying my part for a better park. read more

Review for the dog park: Some very dumb and rude people use the park, but in general it's a better crowd than you will find at a "traditional" dog park. Yes the annual pass kind of sucks, as does the price, but it DOES keep the "riff raff" out and by that I mean people who don't care about their dogs health or behavior. Very few times has there been more than a single incident with a dog before the person leaves or the dog gets over himself. And the incidents are very tame. 2 size parks, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs. Water bowls which self fill are available and there is a hose to rinse the dog off but the water pressure is a joke. Nice open area with poop bag dispensers and trash cans. Covered area with a picnic bench (not for you to bring food into the park and eat on.) park is open late hours and it is lit up at night (albeit not very brightly.) Overall I wish it was a bit bigger and this area really needs a dog friendly lake but this does the job and we feel safe bringing the dogs here. read more

This review is for the playground. This was a favorite destination when my daughter was in preschool. We'd park near Starbucks, buy drinks to go, and then walk down the greenway path to the park. The trip was just the right length for little legs, and it was fun to walk through the "echo tunnel" and pass the dog park, the skate park, the basketball courts, and the tennis courts on our way to the playground--always something interesting to see. We used to call this park "see saw" park, but after they took the see saw out, we started calling it, "no see saw park". This is a small park, which can be a pro or a con depending on the age of your kids and how many others are enjoying the park at the same time. The restrooms and water fountains are very close to the playground. The "big kid swings" seem to go higher than the swings at other local parks, I've noticed. read more

It has 4 or 5 tennis courts, A large dog park, A few trails, And access to the Greenway that can actually take you all the way to the American tobacco trail which leads all the way into Durham. They also have a pretty large skate park that has to be monitored because it's got some pretty big bowls and ramps, you can't just go there any time you want. I am a member of the dog park and I can sympathize with anyone who objects to having to pay to use the park- although I think the previous reviewer's reference to Nazi Germany is more than a little over the top. I was hesitant to spend the money but my dog needed socialization with other dogs so I invested. I can say that I am glad that I paid the money. I use the park every weekend. It is kept clean and well maintained. The Town of Cary has someone fill in the holes the dogs dig every night, 7 days a week. The people who use it are courteous and keep their dogs in control. The advantage of having a controlled access is that if someone is a troublemaker they can have their access revoked. Like anything else, it is a worthwhile investment if you use it. read more

Godbold is a small but well-appointed park near the intersection of Maynard and Chapel Hill Rd. It has lighted tennis and basketball courts, a playground, skate park, dog park, and a few trails and greenways. Acre for acre, it is probably one of the most useful parks in the Triangle. I will devote the rest of this review to setting the record straight about the dog park. Dan C. reports that "one basically has to buy an annual pass so that one can use this dog park." Not true. Day passes are available for only $10 ($5 for Cary residents), and can be purchased at the Bond Park Community Center, which is about a five-minute drive away. If only he and his wife had put as much thought and effort into their visit to the dog park as they put into their lunch at Bella Mia, their visit to Cary would have gone off without a hitch. The dog park at Godbold is the nicest I've ever seen. It is relatively large by dog park standards, and always well-maintained. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, several benches, a covered picnic table, an information kiosk, bag dispensers, and two self-regulating water bowls for the dogs. Also, it is lighted throughout, so the park can be enjoyed even after the sun goes down. (It's open till 10pm year-round.) Best of all, the secure entry ensures that not just anyone can enter the dog park--keeping the park safer after dark--and that all the dogs there have been vetted by the town of Cary (rabies vaccinations, etc.). Charging people to use the dog park actually makes good sense. A dog park this nice isn't cheap to maintain. It requires new mulch periodically, the trash must be emptied, poop bag dispensers must be re-filled, and then there's the water and electric bills. Charging admission means that those who actually use the park bear a greater part of the burden of paying to maintain it than those who don't use it. That makes sense to me. Why should someone who never uses the dog park have to pay as much for it as those who use it regularly? Additionally, since some tax money probably does go toward maintaining the park, it makes sense to charge those who don't pay taxes in Cary a little more. If you've ever been to dog parks that are open to anyone, you probably know that they are usually not very well-appointed and sometimes have dogs who aren't safe to play with. Since I joined the Cary dog park about six months ago, I have probably been 40-50 times. That comes to less than 50 cents per visit. Quite a good deal if you ask me, considering how nice the park is and the fact that the dogs there have all been vetted by the town of Cary. If you want to go to a dog park and you are unwilling to pay $5-$10 a day or $40-$80 a year to help maintain it, then there are many options for you around the Triangle. But if you want to go to a really first-rate dog park like the one at Godbold Park, then don't freak out when you are asked to pay a few bucks and prove that your dog has been vaccinated against rabies. read more
