Being widowed I've learned to make fires but I have never opened or shut the flue. It was open when they got there and when they left the last thing they said was "OK now you can make a fire". But they didn't tell me that they had shut the flue or damper. I didn't know it was a thing until I made a fire and my house filled up with smoke. Opening all the doors and windows didn't work. The fire alarm kept going off. I couldn't make it stop. I shut the glass on the fireplace. Ended up having to call the fire department. I had to get my cats and throw them out in the rain and wait outside. The fire dept confirmed the flue was closed. They opened it and they brought in big fans to air the smoke out of my house. It's still smell smoky. The worst thing is this was super traumatic for me. I didn't know why the house was smoky I didn't know what to do.
