My mother who suffered from dementia needed a special residential facility and we chose Southerland Place because they do a good sales job and have ONE good nurse. Beware. This facility paid very little attention to my mother. Her personal items were stolen from her room. She had very few activities to participate in (as compared with Arden Courts in Northern Virginia). Granted, this place cost a lot less than Arden Courts, but they do not do what they advertise. In addition to what I felt was a sad lack of interaction, when my mother became gravely ill, the staff at Southerland Place didn't call me. The first I heard was from the hospital where she was taken, and by that time several hours had passed and it was too late. My mother died alone because this facility didn't take the time, or care enough, to contact my family.
Then, after she had passed away, we had another battle with moving furniture out of her room and they continued to bill us AND BILL LATE CHARGES AFTER SHE WAS DEAD. In fact, I just received an additional invoice for personal services 4 months after she died.
Really, unless this is close to your home and you are able to visit several times a week, I would not choose this facility, nor would I recommend it. And if you should go and visit and think the staff is nice, do yourself a favor and go onto the internet onto whistle blower websites and read about the management. Not a good situation. read more
