They have a great spacious dining area for their residents. Also offering different events and community activities. They offer transportation for those who need it. I was almost jealous that I couldn't move in, because it's really a nice community. The rooms are spacious and inviting. I just loved the environment there. So if you have a loved one who's looking for a new housing community that caters to the retirees this is the place they may want to look at. Oh and you still I have your own independence which is also nice. But you also have ability to get assistance if needed. Wish I had pictures to share maybe next time when I stop by for a visit

I have and would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a peaceful, caring, and stress free place to live. Some of the reasons for my love of SMW are: 1. It is owned and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, which gives me a great deal of comfort knowing that they will never take advantage of me in any way, and they truly have MY best interests in mind always. 2. It is open to all, with no restrictions. In fact, many residents are not Catholic and are of many diverse backgrounds. 3. The staff at all levels are incredible. They are super qualified, helpful, and friendly at all times. I've never heard an unfriendly comment from anyone. 4. There are many different activities available and never any pressure to participate or not. Musical concerts of many kinds by outside professionals are a frequent and very pleasant activity. 5. Several different apartment floorplans are available. Mine fits me to a T! 6. Dinners are included in all plans and they provide a great opportunity to mingle with other residents and share some great stories and experiences. A great group of people. Please forgive the verbosity, but I want to convey what a great place this really is. If you're considering a retirement community, without a doubt, this is the place you want to be. I highly recommend it.

When I went to Southerland Place and toured the facility I knew this was the place. Their executive director, Sam Stoddard, took time to walk down the hall to say hello and make sure someone was helping me. Later as I talked with him, I could tell he was a man of integrity and cared about his residents. Then I met Courtney, their sales manager, she has a great personality and knew all of the residents by name. As I toured, I tried to watch how the staff interacted with the residents and was impressed with love they showed to each individual. We had lunch with the managing staff and really enjoyed the food and company. They even let the residents help with planning the menu as the chef came out during lunch to discuss options for the next week. Larry and Rena deal with the assessment and all nursing type stuff. They listened and treated my loved one with respect. Nancy, the business manager, has been a great help with getting the proper paperwork needed for long term care insurance. Her door is always open, if you have any questions. When we moved in Sam and Ronnie helped with the move. Ronnie is the manager of maintenance and is quick to help you with any request you may have. It has been 2 months since my loved one moved in and they love the place. The family has seen a big improvement in our loved one mental and physical state. The activities are great! They have had a Senior Prom, Bingo, Card games and other things to stimulate the minds of their residence. At lunch the staff came in and provided entertainment by hula hooping and even Sam got in there and gave it try. My loved one laughed and still gets a chuckle when thinking about it. One last thing that has impressed me is when I see Courtney she always ask how we are liking the place and if there is anything that the Southerland Place can do to make it a better place. I like this because it shows that they are always trying to improve the place. If you are in need of an assisted living facility I strongly recommend The Southerland Place.

6/16/22: I went on a tour here in hopes of moving my grandmother from a different memory care…read morefacility to this one. I explained the entire situation before going & it didn't seem to be a problem. During the tour in memory care, I noticed the strong stench of urine and feces throughout the unit. There were aides on their cellphones, which was an issue I had at the place I wanted to move my grandmother from. I wanted her somewhere where people did their jobs & weren't distracted by their phones while mysterious falls happened and whatnot. So, that Was a turnoff for me. After the tour, I was told by the director that she would be going to do an assessment on my grandmother the next day & would get back to me on next steps. She never got back to me. I heard back from the sales rep & she just said that they can't provide the care my grandmother needed. I found that weird because during my tour, I saw someone half deceased in a bed where she told me they also offered hospice care. If you offer that, there should be nothing you can't do. My grandmother was simply in a wheelchair with dementia. So, I was very annoyed with their lack of transparency and feel that the place I was trying to move her out of sabotaged her ability to leave by telling lies. I wasn't given the chance to dispute anything. I was just told they couldn't take her. That's fine. I probably dodged an even bigger bullet because I was told by staff at her current MC facility that their staff are rough with residents and I don't want my grandmother anywhere where she could be hurt. So, be aware of this if you decide to place your loved one there. Go check the DSS website & check for complaints too.

I spend many days visiting in the common areas with my newest aunts and uncles, losing track of time most every time I visit. After reading the last review I felt the urge to report the changes I have seen. I do not want my newest family to get a bad wrap. I actually toured the entire facility in November 2022, memory care as well. My mother is just outside that area and I have no complaints with any odors. They have recently just taken a portion of the assisted living rooms for the memory care section. My mother's once long hall is getting shorter. I do know they have some of the sweetest ladies working on that side as well. My mother is older and would love a room closer to the dining hall. They are working on updating a room for her now. Maintenance and housekeeping have added some very diligent workers this year already. There is something new being updated every week. The care staff has improved as well, some fresh faces that really love and want to help these elderly residents. I can't think of anything bad to say about this place. if I have a concern I feel like they address it right away. I also see improvements in every department just since November. I recommend to every family in need of their help to get involved, visit regularly, listen to your loved one and become part of this nice community.

I can tell you from first hand experience they are NOT. We paid for medication management and there are days my mother does not even get her meds , or she gets OTC meds but not the most important med which is Eliquis, her blood thinner. They do not adhere to the schedule of when they are supposed to clean her room, do her laundry, assist with her showering, etc. I wrote the schedule on her calendar. My sister and I are hearing issues every single day. My mom is not senile, she stays on top of things and we have had her writing down what is happening on a daily basis when we cannot be there. I am so disappointed because this place from beginning until now has been disorganized and there is no accountability. My mom ended up in the hospital last week and the whole circumstance was mishandled. We are trying to give the new Director time to fix the multitude of problems, but we cannot afford to give them too much time because my mother's medication is a priority. I won't go into all of the other things that have happened, such as no one ever coming to clean, not doing her laundry as promised except for once. My sister came in and did her laundry and had to use her own detergent because the washer was out of detergent and nobody cares. That room is a disgrace as well. Disappointed does not begin to convey our feelings at the moment. If things get turned around I will be happy to amend this review, but as it stands it's very upsetting and excuses get us nowhere.

2/24/22: Where do I begin? We've been searching for a senior assisted living facility with a memory…read morecare option for my grandmother for months now. She's been in and out of the hospital & hasn't been treated the best. My daughter found this place & fell in love instantly. She went on a tour with Shannon a few days ago & called me on FaceTime to speak to Shannon as well. My grandmother's traumatic situation was explained in detail & she made it seem like it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, that was a lie. The paperwork was given to the hospital she is in to complete & it was returned to them for review. The hospital listed something about her being "agitated" and put in restraints there, so Leslie Jones called me today to get further explanation about it. I explained that my grandmother has been placed in restraints at times to prevent her from getting out of bed & falling. She is not used to being forced to stay in bed & not being allowed to use the restroom like a normal human being, so she does try to get up. The staff there doesn't want to waste time getting her up & doesn't have enough people to watch her, so they just put her in restraints. I've complained to hospital administrators as well as well as other agencies about her treatment. Nothing has changed. Today, they were supposed to do a virtual assessment with my grandmother & the social worker at the hospital. They were a no show. They didn't give notice that they changed their minds or anything, so the hospital social worker got nasty with them. How is that our fault??? They decided that she wasn't a good fit there & I'm confused as to why when they have dementia patients there already who sundown and get agitated all the time. My grandmother's agitation has nothing to do with dementia and everything to do with the hospital treating her less than human. This facility, although very beautiful, clearly can't handle dementia patients. After researching them after this happened and seeing that they allowed a dementia resident to wonder off, I guess we dodged a bullet. Check the complaints on this place with government entities; not just reviews on Yelp and other places. They are unprofessional & you couldn't pay me to place her here now. Thanks for discriminating & saving me the headache of having to take her out of there, Anthology.
