In searching for an assisted living facility the task was difficult and stressful. I had my mind…read moreset on one place due to its location and reputation, but felt I owed it to my loved one to do my due diligence and visit all of the places close by. When I went to Southerland Place and toured the facility I knew this was the place. Their executive director, Sam Stoddard, took time to walk down the hall to say hello and make sure someone was helping me. Later as I talked with him, I could tell he was a man of integrity and cared about his residents. Then I met Courtney, their sales manager, she has a great personality and knew all of the residents by name. As I toured, I tried to watch how the staff interacted with the residents and was impressed with love they showed to each individual. We had lunch with the managing staff and really enjoyed the food and company. They even let the residents help with planning the menu as the chef came out during lunch to discuss options for the next week. Larry and Rena deal with the assessment and all nursing type stuff. They listened and treated my loved one with respect. Nancy, the business manager, has been a great help with getting the proper paperwork needed for long term care insurance. Her door is always open, if you have any questions. When we moved in Sam and Ronnie helped with the move. Ronnie is the manager of maintenance and is quick to help you with any request you may have. It has been 2 months since my loved one moved in and they love the place. The family has seen a big improvement in our loved one mental and physical state. The activities are great! They have had a Senior Prom, Bingo, Card games and other things to stimulate the minds of their residence. At lunch the staff came in and provided entertainment by hula hooping and even Sam got in there and gave it try. My loved one laughed and still gets a chuckle when thinking about it. One last thing that has impressed me is when I see Courtney she always ask how we are liking the place and if there is anything that the Southerland Place can do to make it a better place. I like this because it shows that they are always trying to improve the place. If you are in need of an assisted living facility I strongly recommend The Southerland Place.

Bickford Senior Living - 6/16/22: The broke the bulb off her bed & the top of it was off the screw when we got there. It's right above the blood smear.

Today is 5/18/24 & it's taken me a long time to update my review. My last time in this facility was…read more11/30/22 when I had DSS come evaluate my grandmother to remove her from this facility and place her in a nursing home because ANYWHERE would be better than this facility's memory care unit. When they were there and asking staff why my grandmother fell so many times & why she was placed on the floor like a kindergartner, they were met with attitude just as I was. When they left, their nurse (Fai) was making evil faces and didn't like the conversation I was having with another staff member about me feeling that most of the people were only there for a check and didn't care about the safety of the people who lived in memory care. At one point, Fai & I locked eyes and she looked at me evil and I returned the look. She then asked me who I was talking about. I told her if I was talking about her, she'd know. Then, she asked me if I wanted to "take it outside". I don't know about you, but if someone asks you to take something outside, I'm sure you'd take that to mean they are trying to fight you. I had my son's dad on the phone the entire time & he heard everything. I took her up on her offer & followed her "outside" which ended up being her office. I was ready to give her what they'd been giving my grandmother all those months. She closed the door & told me she wasn't Eileen. I asked her what that meant & she, with her ghetto self, said that I knew what they meant. Then her friend came in and said we needed to go to Eileen Kwak's office instead because she didn't want Fai to lose her license trying to fight me. I was ready...but they walked to Eileen's office and I followed. I don't like Eileen because she did nothing to ensure the safety of my grandmother all those months, but when we got to her office, Fai started lying and I told the truth and Fai left the office. I have NEVER had someone try to fight me in this facility, but at that point I was ready to go to jail. After that convo with Eileen, i realized that these people had NO CLUE how dementia affects people because she was saying my grandmother was doing things that is common with having dementia. She also said we could start having bi-weekly calls to give me progress on her, which I had no problem with because my goal was to get her out of there asap anyway. I left that day not knowing that it would be the last time I saw my grandmother alive. On 12/1/22, my grandmother mysteriously died in their "care". Eileen called me frantic around 4 pm stating that my grandmother was unresponsive & that they had her in the floor attempting CPR on a PILLOW. (Everyone knows you don't do CPR with someone lying on a pillow.) She said her BP was 50/80 (does that even make sense???), and that they called EMS. The ER Dr called me around 4:50 pm stating that EMS was trying to revive my grandmother for a long time when this facility knew she had a DNR on file with them but couldn't locate it for them. Why didn't Fai the "nurse" call me herself to tell me what was going on knowing that Eileen was incompetent and didn't know what to do or say to me?? It was because of the fact that she just wanted to fight me the day before. I have no doubt that this was done on purpose though there's no cameras in memory care to prove this. I asked about getting cameras the entire 8 months she was there. They told me they weren't allowed. I wonder why!!! God knows and sees ALL! They will all get theirs eventually. Trust me. Do not leave your family member in this memory care facility. Please!!!! My main regret is leaving her here for the long 8 months she was there. Most of them didn't care about her. The ONLY person I ever trusted her with was Caprea. She seemed like she really cared about the people in memory care. Even with my daughter there to visit most days of the week, she was in the ER more than she should've been & had too many head/eye injuries that they could never explain. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE & YES I complained to the state!! YOU BETTER DO THE SAME IF YOUR LOVED ONE IS HURT THERE TOO. I tried to get her out of this facility several times over the 8 months she was there. I worked full-time in a different state to pay for this facility, so I couldn't provide the 24/7 alone. 1 of the other facilities I looked at had a lock down in place, so that wasn't an option. The 2nd facility came to evaluate her, asked Fai for her records, and then all of a sudden, they couldn't care for her. She was sabotaged from leaving Bickford and then mistreated while there. There's no way someone should have that many mysterious injuries when they are bound to a wheelchair & she was bound to that wheelchair because they never set up therapy for her when she got there in April 2022, from the rehab facility down the street. She got weaker and weaker, and couldn't walk. Check the state complaints. Ignore their cute Facebook posts.

I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.

There are some caring and hard working staff, but overall there is a lack of teamwork on the part of the staff. Cleanliness has also suffered. In memory care, the residents are placed around a TV for most of the day, with little variety of activity or recognition of the needs of individuals. There is poor communication both from the care managers and from the administration. My mother who was a long time resident had 2 episodes of defensive behavior a couple months ago, after which administration was quick to require additional outside sitters at considerable cost. These incidents were not unusual for dementia patients, according to Sunrise staff and outside consultants. Despite no additional events, Sunrise required mandatory discharge after 30 days notice and significantly increased her care level and expense during her remaining stay. We are fortunate to have found a much better place for Mom to live, where people actually care about the residents and give them the respect and care that they need.
