He didn't talk to me The rooms are large, bright, airy and some have double fronted windows with shutters. Beautiful en suite. The breakfast was outstanding. Parking is excellent round the back. They have a gym and a nice pool with jacuzzi sauna and steam room. There is lots of food! I love the food at this place, they do good cooked breakfast with very smart waiters and again, great fun to hang out with when you are stuck at a hotel for a period of time. The TV got knocked out once, annoying but it is an old place, and I was staying in the bit they were about to sell. The living room is so cool! They have Tennyson and other famous Brits all on the walls and nice furnishings and carpet. WIFI! I debated giving this four stars because the decor in my room was horrific - yellow wallpaper and low hung ceiling supports, plus a bit of weird mold in the shower. However, I did stay for one night in the other end of the hotel, and that was great, clean and even had windows (they were tiny in my room unfortunately). Since I know they are getting rid of that bit and no one else will likely have to stay in it for too much longer I give this place five stars. It's a lot of fun and extremely accommodating.

The Old Railway Station - Upper Room

The Old Railway Station is a bed and breakfast hotel that also does afternoon teas…read more The railway line at Petworth closed in the 1960s, and the building quickly became derelict. It was fully restored at the end of the 20th century, and is listed as an historical building of interest, as an unusual example of a classic station design executed entirely in wood. Two of the bedrooms are located within the main building, and are more spacious. However, most people opt to stay in one of the old Pullman carriages, which are parked alongside the old platforms. These provide a unique accommodation experience. We stayed in the upper station room, accessed by a spiral staircase, which was both very spacious and very well appointed. The en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, and plenty of space to put wash bags etc (joy). The bed can be configured as two single beds or a very large double, and was very comfortable. The bedlinen was also very good quality (great pillows). The room was spotlessly clean. Light sleepers might find the noise from the adjacent road a little irritating first thing in the morning, but it did not bother us. We paid £150 per night B&B for two. Check in (in the old ticket office) is limited normally to the mid afternoon/early evening, but there is a caretaker member of staff on site during through the night. Check-out is by 11am on the day of departure. It can be a little tricky to find, particularly if it is dark: the access road runs from the end of the adjacent Badgers pub, on the A285 two miles south of Petworth, but there are no street lamps. There is parking on gravel in front of the hotel. A nice touch was the key-ring with a powerful torch on it, which made walking to the adjacent pub for an evening meal straightforward. Breakfast (and afternoon tea) is served in the former waiting room, which has been lovingly restored and is very impressive. It is decorated with prints of trains and the station in earlier times, as well as items of railway memorabilia. We chose the full English breakfast (one vegetarian, one standard) which was excellent. You are asked to provide your choice is the day before, and your choice of breakfast slot: everything is then prepared freshly to order. This included cereals, fruit, fresh orange juice, toast, croissant and preserves, and the cooked breakfasts itself. In the summer, you can enjoy tea on the platform. This area of the former trackbed has been turned into a lush garden. At night, the absence of artificial light means that, if you get clear skies, you get an excellent view of the night sky - great for stargazing. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly throughout. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We would happily recommend it.

Situated just inside the southern boundary of the South Downs National Park, it is a great location for visiting the nearby Butser Hill viewpoint, the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Buster Ancient Farm, East Sussex and Portsmouth. Although on a map it is located really close to the A3, the road is in a cutting at this point and there is very little noise. We stayed recently for 3 nights B&B, in a superior room: that gives you more space, a small seating area, and a large bathroom with two washbasins and a twin shower (i.e. on large cubicle two showers, each with rainforest shower heads). Standard rooms have baths and/or showers. The room itself was exactly as described, and was very comfortable and clean - nice bed linen and tastefully decorated. The mattress was a tad firm for my liking, but you'll like it if you're used to an orthopaedic mattress. I liked the fact they had a blackout blind as well as curtains. Rooms come with tower fans, iron and ironing board and a fitted hair dryer, safe, and of course TV. The bathroom was huge, the shower was great, with good water pressure and plenty of hot water quickly. The only quibbles we had were that the towel rail radiator and safe were not working on arrival. We reported these and the safe was fixed that day and the towel rail the following day. Wifi speed was good (between 3 and 20 Mbps) but the signal strength dropped sometimes, but it was consistently good in the bar area. We also ate at the pub every evening, as we wanted to be able to have a drink and there is no other hostelry within walking distance. They serve a decent range of beers, lagers and real ales, and have a collection of specialty gins. The menu is quite extensive, with lots of named producers, although the choice for vegetarians and vegans is a bit more limited (one veggie main and one 'plant-based' - excellent olives as a pre-meal nibble though). The evening meals were good pub grub standard, although if you want a Sunday roast you need to get there at lunchtime (they'd run out of roast potatoes by the evening) with generous portions (we could only manage two courses). There was a similarly decent choice of puddings. Worth booking as they are very popular. Chilled decanters of tap water are provided free. Our meals of two courses and a drink came to around £45-£50 for two. Breakfast provides similar choice, with full English, vegan English, Eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs with salmon or poached with avocado, porridge with yoghurt, maple syrup and berries, fruit plates, and toast with a choice of jams/marmalade. Portions were pretty generous - if you added the fruit plate and toast, you'd have a good start to the day. The only real quibble was food service: although always friendly, it varied from excellent to slow - we waited 30 minutes one morning for breakfast to arrive, despite having a timed slot. The biggest plus of the stay overall was the staff, who were lovely and very helpful, answering queries happily and making check-in and check-out very straightforward. Provision for covid-19 was excellent. Overall, it seemed like a very dependable option, and was good value for money. Practicalities: there's a car park behind the hotel wing for guests in addition to main car park at the front of the hotel. Access off the A3 is very easy, though the turn-offs are short with tight bends. There's a room for guests with disabilities on the ground floor and level access there and through to the pub.
