South Bay Moving Systems overcharged us by over $4,000, violated their contractual delivery guarantee, charged for services we explicitly declined, and then completely ghosted us when we attempted to resolve the issues. We are now forced to dispute the charges through our credit card company and file complaints with federal regulators. What Went Wrong 1. Massive Billing Errors & Overcharges Original contract: $7,284.89 (later adjusted to $7,194.78 based on actual weight) They charged us $10,244.04 on July 25th - nearly $3,000 MORE than the entire contract amount Added an unauthorized $650 charge on July 27th for repacking services we explicitly declined via email Issued an incomplete refund of $6,509.08, leaving us overcharged by $1,575.18 They admitted to the billing errors but have not corrected them 2. Broken Delivery Guarantee Contract explicitly stated: "guaranteed delivery within 5-11 days from pickup." They delivered on day 12, forcing our family with two small children to sleep on air mattresses and eat takeout because we had no kitchen supplies. There was no apology, no compensation, and no accountability. 3. Complete Communication Breakdown Promised on pickup day (July 16th) that we'd receive delivery scheduling information Went completely silent between July 18-25 despite our calls As a family moving cross-country with small children, we had no idea when to expect our belongings Had to repeatedly call just to get vague "within 11 days" responses 4. Management Refuses to Respond After the billing disaster, I attempted to resolve directly with manager Justin Jenkins - who is the CEO's son. I have had to pro actively reach out to him every day for over two weeks and nothing has been. He promised to put me in touch with the CEO which has not happened. We are 2 months past the move and they still have our money. The moving guys were great but they broke a nice piece of furniture, it happens, that's understandable but then the nightmare begins. Everyone in the office just says they can't do anything it's up to someone else. Justin, who supposedly runs the place, dodges your calls and the insurance you paid for obviously was never paid, they just pocket that money. When you can finally get paid for the damage it's only a fraction of what they agreed to originally pay and they say, "that's the accounting department and nobody can talk to them." It's a real scam. If you pay them for insurance, get proof that they actually pay it, or better yet, go with another company. Follow up - after my initial review the owner Mario called me to apologize and compensated me for the full amount of the broken furniture. Tip #1 Check the hours they work for you! Keep track of the hours! You will thank me later. Tip #2 If you have family members who want to make some money, pay them instead of hiring movers. Tip #3 if they break something considered gone. There is no point of trying to reach out to them. They won't get back to you. We hired them for our big move from Salinas to Sacramento. The hours that they said they worked were off. First it was a HUGE difference then they fixed, but there was still extra hours. The quote we got at the beginning wasn't even close to what we ended up paying. We got quotes for $2800 ended up paying $4,000 (that's with a discount we got) Our speakers got damage, I reached out to them through email. Still not answer. Our tv has a line and it looks like it got damage too. Maybe if you need to move around that area they are worth it, but if you're moving far try finding family members and buy them food. lol Oh they charge you the same amount when they drive to your destination and wait in traffic like when they're loading and unloading. read more

Aggressive salesperson - when we agreed on terms because we had a deadline, she said it would be National Van Lines moving not them. Lots of breakages and got almost nothing in insurance v the amount of items damaged. The movers were very professional and courteous. They were supposed to arrive between 12-2. However, we received a call at 2 stating the movers had a flat tire and now would not arrive until 3-5. The movers arrived at 3:45 and said their last move took longer then expected. Not sure why their admin felt they needed to lie about the flat tire. Anyhow, we only needed a china hutch moved from one house to another house less then a mile away. We had to pay for a minimum of 2 hours of labor even though it literally only took these two young men 45 min from start to finish. The problem came when my credit card was charged for 3 hours of labor. I called and spoke to Ashton, who said they only charged 2 hours labor but there is also a driving time charge which they add to the labor cost, and a fuel surcharge. Therefore, we were charged for 3 hours of labor, plus the fuel surcharge. I explained that he never mentioned the driving time charge in our prior discussions. He replied that I should have read the contract more closely because it states it in the contract under notes. However, when you look at the contract under estimated charges it shows zero for travel time. It only shows a charge for moving service labor and the fuel surcharge. We felt totally scammed! He should have been honest with us from the beginning, instead of slipping in the extra charge. So if you plan to use this company, make sure to read the small print. We will not use this company again or recommend them to anyone else. It's too bad because the movers really were great. read more

They were pleasant, professional, careful, and they did it all before they were off to a much larger job. They where just what I wanted and needed. We are military and they helped us do our move from Chula Vista, Ca to Medical Lake, Wa. When they arrived, it was on time. The crew was nice. However towards the end of the packing they decided to leave two TVs mounted so we had a way to entertain the kids. Little did we know, that wasn't allowed. They didn't leave the movers packing paper or boxes for the TVs. They had a mover ( not the packer) help me pack up one last small box. I had some watches in it, a brand new pair of women's tennis shoes in the box bc I just bought them. He talked me into just tossing the shoes into the box. I also had some keep sale items for the kids and my electric tooth brush. When the gentleman went to throw it in the truck he didn't tag it or tape it up. He assured me it will get up to Washington for us and he will seal it properly . Needless to say the box never arrived to my home in Washington. Along with the screws to our bunk bed for the kids. My beach cruiser bicycle. One of the loaders didn't want to put a tag on my bicycle. Luckily , another guy told him he has to... but once I heard him question about putting a tag on my bike, I knew I wouldn't be seeing that again. Some wall home decor. They misplaced the screws and a wooden piece for our cal king bed frame. So we had to sleep on the mattress on the floor when we got home. They put tape directly on our personal items which we learned is a No, No when we arrived in Washington from one of their inspectors. Now we are being told they have 6-9 months to locate our missing items and for us to get some sort of compensation if items not found. I don't want compensation, I want our items found. Makes you wonder who took them, who misplaced them and where is everything at now. I had a custom made sign from my kids out of wood and that was damaged. Bookshelf's broken. Glass in pictures broken as well. They also didn't pack everything up properly. We wanted to bring our new garden hose from Cali and apparently is has to be drained out and drying overnight so the movers wouldn't load. The packers left behind some items that I had to load into my personal vehicle bc they ran out of packing. Luckily I had my vehicle there still and they didn't mind transporting it with extra weight. Once they were all done packing up, they were so eager to get us to write a review for their boss to see so they get bonus points with their boss vs letting us see how it all went on the other side. My husband did leave a review with five stars but it shouldn't be there and he regrets posting it so fast for them. It's a pain trying to get in touch with anyone to help us search for our missing items and it's already been a month. An absolute nightmare working with this company. They managed to lose thousands of dollars of my personal belongings and seemingly did not care. If that wasn't enough, they also managed to lose a parts box, making half of my furniture unusable. I called them half a dozen times over the course of three days to get any kind of indication that progress on a search for these items was occurring. I used them twice, from Los Altos and then from Sunnyvale. I am overdue in writing this. Mario was incredibly flexible and patient with my changing dates. The crews worked very hard both times, hardly taking breaks. Their packing is excellent and fast. They were flexible to let me have some things packed myself or not fully packed. The only issue I had was that my stuff spilled over slightly past the single truckload which made them too tired at the end of the day. It was partly my issue regarding the total amount of contents. They refused to let me in boxes when I asked, refused to let me grab personal items. This was the worst move experience I've had to date after moving 5 times via the military. It was a complete waste of a day for my wife and I because we were waiting around for the crew to show up. We were told four different times that the crew would be arriving at a certain time and every single time, they didn't show up. One guy showed up finally at 230 (after we were told he'd be there originally at 10) and then three more guys showed up at 530. The workers did a jam up job packing everything up and loading but they didn't finish and leave until 1130 pm. I didn't see any of them eat. Multiple times I called Ana and Mario and each time they could not articulate what was taking the workers so long to get there. Each of them just said "let me get an answer for you." I never got calls back unless I called them first. The only excuse we heard (which isn't an excuse) was that this is a busy time of year. In my professional opinion, this was a ridiculously poor management of resources. I had booked this move a solid 3-4 months ago. This company KNEW that my move was scheduled for this date. To have scheduled that many moves in one day, have the workers show up late, and then pull workers from other jobs screams piss poor management. Thank god we didn't have to move out the next day. Once again, I'll reiterate, this was not the workers fault this was managements fault. I will not be recommending this company to any one else. read more

After several back an forth calls Mary Beth told me they were not able to take my things to my final destination as of to date. My move is hopeful for Sept and this was workable for me. The reason for this 5 star rating is because they respond/communicate quickly. Professionalism and knowledgeable Mary Beth left no stone unturned. She answered every question and was through making sure what I should be looking for when I decide. This was a 4 day exchange of information while she investigated. Military PCS for my husband and I, transportation thankfully contracted South Bay Movers for the job. Was initially quoted one day packing and one day loading. But Mario called me a couple days before to let me know that he didn't think all that time was needed so they pushed it back to one day.. which gave husband and i a bit more prep time to get ourselves together. The moving team was efficient and careful, which is why I'm giving this company the 2 stars at least. My experience with the owner of the company, however, was extremely upsetting, and I want to share some of their questionable business practices. I was given an initial estimate for our move well in advance (about 3 weeks) in the amount of $850 for 4 hours with a team of 3 movers. On the day of our move, 4 team members showed up at about 8:30am. I didn't think too much of the additional team member, and didn't question it at the time. The estimate they gave us to sign that day was the same as previously provided-- $850, which we signed. After our move was completed at 1:30pm, and the team left, I received a call from company owner, Mario, calling to collect payment over the phone. He informed me at that time that the cost of our move was actually $1595, because they added an additional team member, and because the move took longer than anticipated. He wanted to charge us for 6 hours of labor, when it only took 5 hours, including driving time. He claimed that our estimate was "updated that morning", and I was supposed to receive a call from the sales team (which I did not, as I informed him). He did not take any accountability for this lack of communication. When I questioned his attempt to charge us almost twice as much as the original estimate without notice, he argued with me, and claimed that his company "could have held our belongings hostage" until we paid. He also claimed that I undervalued the work his team did with our move. I pointed out repeatedly that I respected and appreciated the work of the moving team, and I was, in fact, questioning his business practices as the owner of the company. As a former business manager myself, I take issue with his lack of communication, lack of accountability, lack of integrity, his attempt to charge us for more labor time than was actually done, and his demeaning and disrespectful demeanor. After 20 minutes or more of back and forth, I eventually convinced him to reduce the charge to $1200, which was still inappropriately high, but being 5 months pregnant, I was starting to feel ill from the stress of the move and the hostile conversation. We will not be using, or recommending, this company again. read more

I agree with the other review. The workers were good, hard working, they moved fast and did not take their time in an attempt to get the price higher. They made a mistake (and I made a mistake until not noticing until they were gone) and forgot to move my washer and dryer. I contacted the company and after a couple of days they responded that they would move the washer and dryer for an additional $280. Keep in mind that I went through the house prior to the move and they took an inventory of what I was moving and the washer and dryer were included. I assume they tell their workers to try and leave something so they can charge people extra. If you used them and everything went well I would be curious to know if they "accidentally" forgot something that you caught before they left. Either way, this is a business that does not understand customer service. When something goes wrong, you fix it and you do not charge the customer for your mistake, period. It will be too bad when they eventually go out of business because they have a good labor crew, just an unethical management group. read more
