That hasn't been the case for years now particularly with all the options of enjoying movies at home. A good friend was visiting us from New Jersey for a few days last week and she and I decided to go see Spencer at one of Hingham's local movie theaters. This is a smaller multi-plex and we went to the 4pm showing. The particular theater was on the smaller side and given the time of day was not crowded at all which was nice. What wasn't nice is that walking in, the floor was littered with popcorn. Granted, two young men came in shortly after we arrived and started sweeping but the initial impression was a messy one. What was interesting was that we purchased our tickets a couple of hours ahead of time and then went to have lunch. When we returned to see the movie there was no one collecting tickets. We simply walked into the theater. I would never have done this but it was absolutely unnecessary for us to have had tickets. This is not the fault of the theater but the first 10 minutes or so was filled with actual commercial ads being shown on the screen. Ugh! Best not to come too early so you can avoid this. There were a couple of coming attractions which I always enjoy. I have found that often movie theaters have the sound turned up to a deafening level. Thankfully this was not the case here. The temperature of the theater was comfortable as the other problem is often excessive air conditioning or stuffiness. I still much prefer to watch movies at home. We have set up the family room with a big screen and surround sound. It was pleasant enough to be in an actual theater although this place needs to ensure cleaner floors prior to customers entering, and do a better job of checking tickets. I suspect, like many places, they currently must be short of help.

Paid 6.50 for crappy bag of pop corn. Clearly not fresh and sml kernels like from the bottom of fresh if it was made fresh. It was a two o'clock show so it should have been freshly made there. Disappointing bag. Told the snack bar cashier and showed Him. No response.

It's reminiscent of the theaters many of us remember growing up with before the advent of the "multiplex" pavilions. This movie house has old style charm while providing locals with better movies. I almost always want to see whatever is playing here. This isn't necessarily the place you'd come to see the latest blockbuster because most of the time you won't find those movies playing here. I come here because this is where you can find the less than big-budget films. You can find art house films, and the more unusual interesting movies that tend to get much less play elsewhere. You'll get indie movies thrown in the mix and film festival selections that are otherwise hard to track down. Prices are reasonable especially if you go to the first showing of the day when tickets are half price. You can find me up in the balcony, right hand side. I love that the theater has that old fashioned balcony which affords, I think, the best view. The structure itself has an illustrious history having been completed in 1852 after a Hingham women's group came up the idea to build "a commodious and suitable building for Lectures, Picnics and Social Meetings of all kinds." These ladies were able to get the attention of some notable and well-to do citizens in the Hingham community who funded their project all for the sum of $4,435.57. (I love how they recorded that figure down to the cents!). This Greek Revival structure was then modernized in 1936 and became a movie theater. It's in private hands now and is part of the Patriots Cinema chain of theaters. This particular theater retains a strong sense of community and place and is an important fixture in the Hingham community. I enjoy seeing movies here because of the atmosphere and history and I love supporting local treasures like this.

The screen wasn't as big as I thought it would be, mostly because I thought it would be larger than the Xplus showings they have in Hanover. The movie looked great and the sound system was superb, but the staff seriously needs to be trained better. The IMAX theater does not have reclining seats and if you wear a hat expect to be asked to remove it by the person in the row in back of you. The confessions stand had stale popcorn and it didn't look like there was any machines to pop the popcorn. While the theater is quite large it has this outdated feel to it like it hasn't been updated since the 90's. We had no problem getting a parking spot. Because it had IMAX movies, I'm sorry to see it go but if Showcase wasn't going to spend some money to update it, it's probably best that they decided to close it.

All the staff I dealt with was great, but it seems they wear multiple hats! And can't be at all the desks at once! Once they noticed me I got everything I needed. They have a lot of food and drink options for a movie theater. They have a regular concession desk and a coffee/booze bar. No pretzels, but I ended up getting the nachos. Movie theater prices, of course. I didn't love the 25 minutes of previews after the posted show time, but all in all a good experience.
