Free parking lot. Empty when I arrived in the morning, but no spaces by the afternoon. It is a pretty peaceful beach. It doesn't really have a tourist feel that some beach areas have since it's just the beach itself (no shops/food or anything like that). It's not a huge area, but we came during low tide and walked around the more rocky area before the tide started rising. They do have restrooms at the parking lot. Although, the restrooms were disgusting when I was there, so I'd avoid it if possible. (Not flushing toilets.)

Muir Beach feels like the California people imagine, but quieter and more honest…read more Instead of a crowded boardwalk or lines of shops, you come down a winding road through coastal hills and suddenly the land just opens up. The ocean isn't bright blue like postcards, it's deep gray-green, powerful, and constantly moving. The waves don't gently roll in... they crash. You feel it in your chest before you even step on the sand. The sand is darker and softer than most beaches, almost cool even in the sun. Behind you are tall grasses and weathered driftwood, not hotels. In front of you is nothing but horizon. There's a small creek cutting through the beach and a wooden bridge crossing it, which somehow makes the whole place feel more like a nature preserve than a tourist stop. People aren't blasting music or playing volleyball, they're walking, breathing, taking pictures, or just sitting quietly watching the water. If you want a loud beach day, this isn't it. If you want to slow down and actually feel the ocean, this is one of the most peaceful places near San Francisco.

Completed this thru-hike from Muir Woods to Stinson Beach on 9/17/2021. The trail is approx. 6…read moremiles (one way), with an elevation gain of +1400. The weather was perfect for this hike, overcast with a little sunshine peeking through throughout the hike..so beautiful. I can't begin to articulate the beauty of this trail and the peace it brought me. Pictures posted, do NOT do any justice!! If you decide to start in Muir Woods you will be required to pay for parking and an entrance fee. If you have an annual pass, you will not require to pay the entrance fee. This hike is strenuous on the knees, use trekking poles for the last 3 miles of the trail, as you descend into Stinson Beach. The grade is -8.1%. Dress in layers, bring lunch/snacks, plenty of H2O. The takeaway, if you decide to do this thru-hike: 1. Make sure you have a ride back from Stinson Beach to Muir Woods. You will not be able to get an UBER or Lyft. There is an individual who will take you back to your car if needed. Their information is at the end of the Trail and charges 20$ for the group. But, I'm not sure if he's still active. 2. Spotty cell service throughout the hike. 3. Dress in layers. 4. Take your time going down the "stairs from hell". 5. Enjoy the scenery and take lots of pictures.

We started at the beautiful Old Mill Park (where I used to take my niece & nephew when they were little). As mentioned in other reviews there are lots & lots of steps! Great cardio & leg strengthening. The views are so worth it and the trip back was super quick bring all downhill. Many other options of hiking trails to take from here which I like.
