We were on a road trip back to L.A. and stopped to stretch and get a little fresh air. This was the perfect stop to do so. Easy parking along the street, empty trails and a tree swing! I am always on a lookout for a swing and although it is very high, too wide and the seat is narrow, we had some good laughs. The hike to the swing is less than 10 minutes from parking, but you can continue up the mountain side for a lot longer. The trails are easy to follow, a bit muddy in some spots and quite a few dogs unleashed along the way. This is a very easy hike with a gradual incline and definitely family friendly. There's a beautiful view with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance, you'll enjoy it much more on a clear day. This day was a bit gloomy, a little windy but still beautiful. Definitely take a few hours to explore this hidden gem. Enjoy!

Beautiful view. Wasn't bad getting there. Clear trail. There were three swings to choose from. Got some great pictures.

So glad after years on my bucket list I was able to visit. It was a perfect 77 degrees. In the sun it's hot but the tree is so huge and shaded so it was perfection. Went on a Friday afternoon and had the swing to ourselves. The views on a clear day shows sf skyline and GG and it's the most gorgeous view. If you're looking to go here without hiking, park at 100 Gilmartin. It'll be a short few minutes walk to the tree. Bring a step stool to get on the swing. Nice place for a quiet picnic.

The Hippie Tree is a hidden spot for a picturesque view of the surrounding area. I've only seen 2 swings: a single-seat and two-seater. One is broken. There's a short hike upward for maybe 5 minutes. Depending on the time of day, there may be a wait for the swings. There were lines for each swing with people waiting to take photos. Being patient is need. There were people who were perfectionist, so they took a million photos before coming off the swings. If you're in the area, drop by. But if you're coming from a far place for 2 swings on a tree -- pass.

Hidden gem in Tiburon! I came in the late afternoon during the weekday and there was street parking near 110 Gilmartin Dr. The entrance is where you see the rounded security mirror. It's a short walk up the hill, then you turn left, and you can't miss the big tree and the swings. There were 3 swings, but 1 was broken. The view was stunning! I could see the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Bay Bridge, and Sausalito. Simply stunning. Highly recommend a detour here if you are in the area and it's a clear day!

This place was so beautiful! A wonderful photo opportunity and a gorgeous hike all wrapped in one. It's a must visit and although it's a bit tucked away from major cities, it is worth the drive.

It's a fairly easy hike from the residential homes to the hippee tree. Surprisingly secluded but scenic spot for viewing the city. The swings can be a bit high to climb on or maybe they didn't adjust it well when we came here... we only saw one swing available though there seemed to be another one from old pictures.

From the large rock. Fred & Ginger would call this "Swing Time".

A little bit of Berzerkeley in an unlikely location. Really, you do not expect that, right in the neighborhood of executive mansions on a grassy hillside, there is a place named for the sub-sub-anticulture in the late 1960s that said "Turn on, tune in, drop out." My efforts to find out why this huge eucalyptus got its name were unsuccessful; my guess is, this is a spot where many hippies came to drop acid. The label "hippie" does not have ready identification in the under-30 population, so maybe this spot should be named "Swing Tree"? There are three unusual things about this location: 1. The tree itself is probably the largest of any on the Tiburon peninsula. Twice as wide as others. You'll be able to spot it from Gilmartin Drive. 2. A large boulder to the right that's easy to climb up. The views aren't good from the top because of the surrounding trees, but it's fun, and could make for a fantastic photo shoot. 3. Most famously, the swings. There were four when I visited. These are clearly replaced when they wear out. If you feel like revisiting your childhood, this is a place to do it. To get there, go a little way up Gilmartin Drive, and the fire road goes to the left shortly before Gilmartin gets narrow, makes a sharp right turn, and snakes to the top of the ridge for even more swanky houses. The fire road is a little steep. The view of Richardson Bay, Sausalito, and SF is wow. Not a place to spend a lot of time, unless you're doing a photo shoot. But it's an unusual place for a picnic, with those swings. It's cool, relaxing, and totally Bay Area.

I saw this beautiful view with the swing on Instagram a week days ago so I decide to visited. It was about 2 hours drive from San Jose due to traffic in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. You must exit Tiburon which passed the golden gate and Sausalito. Park on Gilmartin Dr, on the right side of the road. Trail is on the left. It is in the residential area so parking is limited. There is hiking trail on the right that lead to this view. You will see a Eucalyptus tree on your left side as you parked. There are 3 swings on the tree. The one with the beautiful view required a little strength to get on top of it. If you are short, you will need a little help. The swing was strong and can hold very well, I am only 110 pounds so it works for me. It is under a The Eucalyptus tree, so you wouldn't worry about the sun. You can bring foods and had a picnic here. When I got there around 2 PM, no one was there except us so we get to enjoy the swings. After we left, there were a couple coming and one more heading up. I recommended coming here during noon so the clouds and fog cleared out during the morning. I believe sunset would be beautiful also! This place is hidden so it is not that busy yet...

An island of homes, just beautiful

The view was amazing, even on a cloudy day. Even though I had to climb on the swing with my scary self and scared to get down, it was still nice and peaceful. It made my birthday even more amazing. I will one day go again, when then the sky is clearer. So if you haven't been you should go. It's a little walk up a hill, so dont wear heels, but you can be cute and comfortable.

Hippy Tree offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Tiburon and even a glimpse of the golden gate bridge in the distance. Get those Instagrams ready! You park on the street in the cut out parking area, walk up the fire trail where the round mirror is located. The tree is probably .25 mile up the trail to your left. It's a really easy stroll. At the tree, there are two swings! They seem very sturdy and well attached to a bulky branch. The swing furthest from the tree is a single rider and the one closer can easily fit two people. It is definitely work the trek up here to swing your worries away.

Yes yes and more yes! I think the photos below say the most. Not everyday is perfectly sunny skies in the Bay Area. But if catch it on a good day the you are in for a very magical treat.

If you're ever in the mood for a little peace and serenity whilst in the Bay Area, then stop on by to this hidden treasure in the city of Tiburon. How do you get to Tiburon you may ask? Well you simply take a long ride through the Golden Gate Bridge North, go through the Robin Williams tunnel, pass Sausalito, then a few minutes later you're surrounded by houses you could only dream of living in. Once you're on the turning street head all the way towards the dead end street and park your vehicle on the curb. You'll then walk about half a mile upwards in a grassy field then take a right once at the top of the hill. You'll see a vehicle pathway. Follow that until you see the big tree at the end of the cliff along with a gorgeous view of the city. While there you will not hear a honking vehicle, nor the sound of engines. You will not hear another person besides the one you are with. Instead you will hear the wind through the trees and grass and you will feel sunshine on your face. You will hear the sound of birds chirping and the rustle of the leaves. This is quite the place for pictures and maybe a picnic if you plan ahead of time. Whatever you visit Hippie Tree for make it memorable and please leave it just the way you found it. Keep it clean, keep it beautiful and most of all keep it tranquil!

What a cool spot - be careful parking and walking across the street with small children. Bring a picnic.

We were warned to watch for coyotes - I always have a whistle with me when I hike so felt OK about it. We did close to a 4 mile loop maybe about 600 feet of climbing or so. Stunning!

The views here are 5 star, it doesn't get much better than this. Hiking wise the preserve doesn't…read morehave the greatest trails but it's more geared for a shorter hike with views. The most basic is to park at the end of Vistazo Street and take the fire road to the church and back. This is an easy 1 mile walk which is good for people that aren't looking to go hiking but want to take an easy walk in nature. Another way to get to the church is from downtown which is only about 15-minute walk and has some elevation but still easy. I think that's a good idea for ferry day trippers to Tiburon looking for something more to do than just hanging out downtown. It's worth seeing Old Saint Hilary's Church because it's so historic but the open hours are extremely limited, I've never been in because it never seems to be open. Currently I think it's only open Sundays from 1-4pm. There are a few different trails in the preserve but nothing is super long, it's more about the amazing views of the city, bay, Angel Island, and beyond. It's quite breathtaking, especially in the spring with the wildflowers. A sign sits on the top saying Private Property and No Trespassing and looks like there are some more trails beyond but they don't look too maintained or stable. To make this a longer hike there is the loop that goes down to Tiburon Uplands Nature Preserve from one of the trails. This loops down to Paradise drive and adds about an extra mile.

Fishbits' Trail - This is up on the last hill before making decent to lookout point over Angel Is.

There is a trail head just in front of the parking spots or you can catch it at the back of the church. This trail cuts across the bottom of the Old Hillary Preserve - imagine the preserve is a wedge and the trail cuts across the point of the wedge. It ends on a residential street - Vistazo West, where we then hiked up the hill - linking to Lyford Dr. It's pretty steep, but eventually you get to another trailhead from Lyford. You may want to turn left up Sugar Loaf and then Right on Heathcliff Dr, but it was pretty steep and we decided to stay on Lyford, which also leads to a trialhead for Fishbits. Once on the trail head you climb to the top with the trail's clear hills and valleys ,and have amazing views of the bay, Angel Island and the Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. If you take this to the end - you will be greeted by a "No Trespassing -Private Property," sign just outside a wire fence that has been cut open - clearly some time ago. We proceeded and there is another sign posted right at the lookout point for Angel Island. Taking this trail around - there are now houses on the left which are enclosed by chainlink fencing. At this point, you may want to go back on the main trail or if you proceed, the trail gets a bit more narrow and challenging - uneven, less groomed, some rocks, etc. but clearly more than a deer trail. It cuts across the mountain and then switches back towards the trail behind Old Hillary's Church. All Trails lists this a down and back trail and not a loop. We kept going and it did eventually loop back to the church. It was just short of 4 miles, steep, and took us 2.5 hours and I'm not in great shape. So there you have it!
