Best beach for families, dogs, fishing, gatherings, hiking, nature trails, and more. Parking is plentiful and free. Bathrooms are right off the main parking lot. Dogs are allowed off leash. Fishing seems highly successful based on the folks we saw on several occasions. Belly boards and surfing look fun, but if one is over 5 years old, wet suits advised. Only the very young or brave can take the cold water for long.
This is a great calm beach to get away from it all. It's very meditative. I find it to be quiet and ideal on the weekdays in the mornings. Later in the day school groups tend to come for field trips and on the weekends it can get a bit busier. There's good parking and hiking trails around to explore batteries and the rest of the Marin Headlands. The Estuary next to the beach is adjourned by many wildflowers and wild mustard.
We visit a beach often. I love the sound of water, the sand, the air, All of it! It makes me feel peaceful. I think I actually need it to stay sane. Haha. This beach was no different. They have a wire runway across the sand for the first 100 or so yards, very easy to walk on. Then the flip flops fly off and its toes in the sand!! There is the main beach which was beautiful and only somewhat busy. We are not main beach people though and if you continue to walk and climb a few rocks, run from some waves, you will find more private little beaches to zen out on. This one made our list to visit again, for sure! Dog friendly.
This place is great for anyone and everyone who enjoys the beach and being outdoors. Pets included! This past visit, we started with a beautiful sunrise hike that looped around the hills and ended at the beach. The trails are well maintained and have amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking through sporadic clouds. The beach is a great spot to watch or join in on some surfing. Or take your pups for a walk/swim along the shore. Friendly dogs off leash. It's a clean beach. A great way to spend a morning/afternoon. There's many other great hidden spots around there.

Like a widescreen exotic location in a David Lean epic, this is one of those windswept places you think is far away but not really. How's that for a pretty noncommittal statement? Anyway, it's just across the Golden Gate Bridge, but we are talking about the Marin Headlands which means you have to get through the one-way Baker Barry Tunnel. I've never been lucky enough to get through that hole without waiting 5-10 minutes in line on Bunker Road and sometimes beyond. But once you get through the tunnel, it's a breeze to get to the beach. Parking is usually not hard because if the lot is full, you can park along the road in perpendicular fashion. The beach itself is a big crescent-shaped sandbar between a large marshland lagoon and the Pacific. Actually the beach itself is more pebbly than sandy and darker in hue than you'd expect, but I have to say the chief lure for me are the surrounding trails. The most obvious one is the beautiful coastal trail that hugs the bluff to Tennessee Point. The views from Point Bonita to Muir Beach are spectacular. Just be careful of the aggressive mountain bikers who view you as inanimate barriers. The main trail veers to the right past Battery Townsley and the remnants of a huge ship gun. It's definitely more strenuous as it continues to climb up Wolfe Ridge. Don't judge me but I didn't make it to the fabled Hill 88, an abandoned radar station because the howling wind and rolling fog made it feel like a more treacherous trek than I wanted to conquer. Still, I made it far enough to see the graffiti-covered ruins along the hillsides. I just knew that if I couldn't even see the ocean below that I should turn back and head to Fort Cronkhite along the more manageable hillside road. I have stayed in SF for 2 years but never explored this beach. It is located on the other side of Golden Gate Bridge and not very touristy. And it's beautiful. On the other side you see mountains . It is well maintained , has ample parking places and clean restrooms. When I went the weather was a little cloudy and had lot of fog but on a clean sunny weather I am sure you can enjoy more. Def recommend trying it out.
Definitely one of the most stunning beaches in Sausalito and within Marin in general. Tons of parking, tons of space, and tons of beach! And those views?! Yeah, they're quite breathtaking if I shall say so myself. This is the definition of relaxation. If you're a hiker, there are so many beautiful trailheads that begin and end right here at this beach. The Marin Headlands are right next door, so it makes total sense. This is one of the Marin beaches where it actually stays warmer during the summertime, and you'll actually get a break within the clouds on a good day. Started and finished a beautiful hike at this beach, and then literally took a nap while listening to those soft waves crashing in the background afterward. Usually I freeze my ass off at Bay Area beaches even during that summer, but Rodeo is one of the rare beaches where I crave for the cool breeze. This is the perfect beach for social distancing because the coast side goes on for miles and there's plenty of sand to go around. Speaking of sand, you're gonna wanna wear sandals at a minimum because unfortunately the sand isn't soft to walk on. It's more of a pebbly beach versus a soft sand beach, but that shouldn't stop you from getting in the water. The waves are short and calm, perfect for light swimming or just to get your feet wet. There are tons of clean portable restrooms right near Fort Cronkite. Even when this beach is crowded, it doesn't feel like it is because people are super spread out. Rodeo Beach is also dog friendly, so bring your furry friends with you. So grateful to have this beautiful beach nearby when I need it the most... aka during COVID! Bring a picnic or just bring yourself and enjoy.

Don't come here if you're in a hurry, traffic in can be hit or miss so leave a few hours for this coastal bliss. Bathrooms are free, moderately clean can get kinda busy, but doesn't ruin the scene. Great for people who don't like sand Mostly small pebbles, feels good on your hands.
Such a beautiful spot! Came here to walk along the beach and enjoy the view. My husband and pup and I loved our time here. Soooooo remote and peaceful feeling. I saw plenty of birds as well. Plenty of parking although it does get busy. Bring a jacket! read more

Lovely hike with my besties on a Saturday afternoon. There were quite a few surfers, walkers, hikers and bikers out today. The windy was very gusty but as the afternoon progressed we enjoy lovely, sunny weather. There are two options, paved or dirt roads which was nice. The bikers were extremely polite and road sharing was not an issue. We greeted quite a few dogs that were on the trail with their families which is awesome (retired dog mom here). So many trail options, we plan to return. read more
Super chill beach! Not crowded. Lots of parking. Bathrooms. The temperature drops 10-20 degrees on the coast if you're coming from up north like San Rafael, Novato, Petaluma etc. Bring a blanket , there is sand but it's pebbles so not white soft sand. Still super fun and my son loved it. There's people who surf and lots of folks walking their dogs. read more

Don't forget go to marine mammal center, it's free and lot of sea lion, seals. staffs are friendly too. beautiful Rodeo beach and lagoon, nice place to enjoy sea breeze, it's a hot summer day, the water and sea breeze are cold, but we lying on the sand beach, it's warm, very comfy. read more

Single lane tunnel lead us here from Sausalito. The view is spectacular either side of the tunnel but a lot more open space with fresh air on this side and a lot less crowded. For those who enjoy biking, hiking, surfing, jogging, picnicking ---- this place will be perfect for you. We like the cooler weather so we like to come eafly. Check it out! Love outdoors, history and the ocean? I have the spot for you! Rodeo Beach is located two miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin Headlands. About 50 meters of sand separates the ocean from Rodeo Lagoon. Right next to the lagoon is Fort Cronkhite, a former World War II military post. The fort was build in preparation for a possible Japanese invasion that never came. The beach is very dog friendly and great for picnics. It is also a favorite of local surfers. If you are interested in wildlife, just bring along your binoculars and you are likely to see plenty of California Quails, Mallards, Brown Pelicans, Egrets, Turkey Vultures, etc. One of the highlights, if you are into hiking, is Battery Townsley. Named after Major General Clarence P. Townsley, the construction of Battery Townsley began in 1938 and was completed in 1940. It was a high security operation. San Franciscans knew that there were batteries in the Marin Headlands but did not know their exact locations. Battery Townsley was the second 16-inch battery on the West Coast, after Battery Davis at Fort Funston. Today, it is open to the public from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM on every first Sunday of the month. Rodeo Beach offers great hiking options with amazing views of the coastline and headlands. One can even see San Francisco skyline from the peaks on a clear day. There is a 4.5 mile loop that seems to be very popular with visitors. I have hiked it starting at the Coastal Trail entrance on the north end of the parking lot. I personally like the Tennessee Point Trail which rewards you with an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean and a couple of coves. If you are going on this trail, make sure to heed the warning signs about steep cliffs and drops. read more

One of my favorite beaches to lounge around... literally we drove there and promptly fell asleep on our blankets that covered the sand. It's so relaxing with the warm sun and soft kssh kssh of the waves back and forth. Amazing views of sand, surf, nature, and Golden Gate Bridge. We also saw an otter in the little pond under the bridge that's just before the ocean! Adorable. Very dog friendly. Make sure you bring something to do like kites or games or a beach set up like tents and blankets because this is purely the beach. There's no one selling ice cream or lines of food trucks around so bring some grub too. Miles away from the hustle and bustle, you'll feel like you're on another planet. It's unreal. Rodeo Beach is big enough so it didn't seem crowded on a Sunday. Beach feels pretty intimate still, and everyone gives you your space. Takes a bit of a journey to get to but worth it! Also great sights along the drive as well. Enough parking to not get road rage. Highly encourage you to visit, even if it's just a quick stop on your way. read more
Beautiful beach just a short drive from SF. There was plenty of parking in the lot and I loved that they had clean bathrooms with flush toilets. A bunch of trails right by the parking lot. Not a "hidden" gem so if you're looking for something secluded, this isn't it. Will definitely be back! read more

I went here for the first time with my family in late September. It was absolutely gorgeous! We went on Friday, September 24, 2021. It was completely foggy the day we went, which I thought was awesome. Be prepared to bundle up. There was quite a lot of FREE parking at the parking lots near the beach (Fort Cronkhite side) near where the barracks are. There are also many trails here that range from beginner level to hard in my opinion. Some are paved trails, while others are dirt trails. Either way, if you are up for hiking, wear sturdy shoes with a good grip to be safe. I feel like I will never be bored here because I can hike, relax at the beach, look at the different types of wildlife at the lagoon, or dip my feet in the water. There is also a lot of open space here, so I feel like even if there were a lot of people, social distancing won't be an issue. I came back here with my boyfriend on a Sunday to celebrate our 41st monthsary together. He loved it! We liked exploring the trail near the lagoon and the one on the bluffs that leads to a bench where you can sit down and enjoy the view. After all of the hiking that we did, we took out our foldable chairs, found a spot on the beach, and relaxed together while watching the waves. We will definitely be back! read more

What an absolutely beautiful beach. Tucked away in between a couple mountains near the Golden Gate Bridge is Rodeo Beach. When I saw other Yelper's reviews and pictures, I knew that I had to see this beach for myself. It does not disappoint. The sand is made out of colorful pebbles and semi precious stones that it is so lovely to look at. There are so many photo opportunities here. From the mountains in the background to the large rock formations on shore, its an Instagrammers dream. It is just so peaceful to walk across this beach from the beginning to end. Be careful where you are walking as you might encounter a crab and some mussels and even a beached whale! We saw the decomposing body of a beached whale and it was both sad and awesome to have witnessed something like this. This beach is definitely a gem of the Bay Area. read more

With so many beaches in the Bay Area this is one that is spectacular as you can come here and spread out a blanket and watch the surfers, fishermens, and family enjoy the day along the Pacific Ocean. Plenty of parking and open space that you'll find a spot to relax. Located at the west end of the Marin Headlands it's a fairly easy drive from the Bay Area. Plenty of trails for your liking from hiking, running or biking. Many ridges and hills for all ages nearby if you want to be adventurous and explore. The beach has showers and bathrooms so you can clean up before leaving. read more

Great beach with surf-able waves. Relaxing and friendly vibe. It has multiple trail heads, is dog friendly, and has unique red and green pebbles created from rocks on the seafloor and rubbed off by plate tectonics. You may also spot bits of black agate, carnelian, jasper and jade. But DO NOT TAKE. Take a picture instead. The sand is a bit gravelly vs soft. So bring a pair of sandals/flip flops for getting wet. The most important thing logistically to note is that the restrooms are next to the far northernmost parking lot. read more
After a bit of googling, I managed to find this beach. Is it Ro DAY oh Beach? Or is it RODE EE OH Beach? I don't know which, all I know is that this was one big dog friendly beach. Free and lots of parking. Lucked out on a spectacular day and there were lots of pups off leash, from tiny chihuahuas to giant Irish wolfhounds. People watching on a beach was fun, but I felt a bit sorry for those folks who came for a picnic not knowing it was an off leash dog friendly beach. They look annoyed when they whipped out all their food and suddenly there were 9 dogs kicking sand onto their towels and looking longingly at their potato chips. Rangers were on patrol keeping an eye on things. Go for a hike on the headlands if you wish - it's a huffing and puffing uphill climb, but the views are spectacular. read more
Pretty. Breathtaking. Convenient. Rocky. These are just a few words that describe Rodeo Beach. Being in the Marin Headlands, there are more days when the weather isn't that good than when it is beach weather, so you need to be ready to scoot over here when it is good. If it's hot in San Rafael, it's likely to be warm here. The big thing about Rodeo Beach is that it's a doggie beach. Rover can fun free here, and there's lots of room for him to run. It's a fantastic place for extroverted dogs, and a terrible place if your dog is not dog-friendly because he'll see enemies all around. (That's what happened to our dog when we took her here.) Beyond the canines: Rodeo Beach is large, with lots of room to spread out. Wide-open, pastoral drive to get here. Several trailheads, and if you use the one on the north end, the options are almost endless. The southern trailhead goes up quickly, rewarding you with a view of the entire beach. Friendly crowd. It looks like there's little parking, but you'll find a spot. Rock climbers can go south and have fun. Rodeo Beach reminds me of the NorCal beaches north from Sonoma County to the Lost Coast - but this is fewer than 10 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge! More people go to Stinson, so that means more room for you :-) read more

Rodeo Beach is the perfect spot for a dog day afternoon. Nestled in the Marin Headlands, Fort Cronkite is just a 10-drive from the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown Sausalito, and yet it feels like your hundreds of miles away from the noisy, hustle & bustle of city life. My friend and I came here recently with our canine companions. This is one of the few beaches around where you can let your dog run off-leash. Needless to say, our dogs were in pooch paradise - playing with other mutts, chasing after seagulls, splashing in the ocean, and sniffing every rock and stick in sight. FYI - there's plenty of parking in the lot. There's also a youth hostel nearby (in case you and your friends want to make a night of it). Be sure to bring a warm jacket and a blanket to sit on. And if you're here with your pet, be considerate to others and bring a baggy to clean up after your animal. Never forget - if they poop; you scoop. read more

This is an awesome beach. But some of the people that come here are disgraceful to the environment and stupid. They pay no attention to the boundaries for protection of wildlife. Several assholes were caught urinating into Rodeo Lagoon. I wanted to report them but no rangers around. Almost got into a fight with one of them, but I was with my kids and my daughters friend, so I had to behave. Otherwise dude was going to get a sand bath! read more
I love sneaking away to this beach after work. Especially to catch the sunset. The parking is free and abundant. The bathroom facilities are decent. The surfers seem to like this spot which is kinda nice to see since the water is so damn cold! There are plenty of trails nearby. Walk up to the bluff to catch the sunset. The view is breathtaking. read more

Rodeo Beach is a majestic beach in the Marin Headlands that packs in quite a bit of scenery but doesn't require that long of a drive in to the park. Plenty of parking, this beach area can also be a launching point for some hikes in the Headlands and I've only given it a passing glance in the past. On a rather warm fall day, I decided to tack on some beach time following a visit to the Point Bonita lighthouse. You can enter the beach via a small footbridge over the nearby wetlands and there are a variety of shore birds to observe en route. Once on the beach itself, the sand is course in some areas but still fine to throw down a blanket and admire the crashing surf and rock formations. I opted to walk the length of the beach and take in views of the nearby hillsides of the Headlands and do some beach combing, where I found some interesting pebbles and sea glass. The best part-all free! How lucky are we in the Bay Area to have access to areas like this with no entrance or parking fees. Photos do not do this area justice. Other notes: -it can be pretty windy so layer up -I'd recommend closed toe shoes if you're going to walk the beach-the sand is rough in some areas -if you are so inclined you can head up to the hiking trails that take you further up in to the Headlands (I haven't done them in a while but feel inspired from this trip to plan a hike again soon in the area) All around a great place to settle in for the day or make it part of multiple stops in the GGNRA. read more
Hike up the mountain and down the beach. We got there about 11:30 the day started out cold and drizzling. The drizzle stopped half way up the mountain. I had on shorts, zip up hoodie and a ball cap and I was fine. The last descend the sun came out so we decided to do the length of the beach. It was such a nice hike I can't wait to go again. read more

Dog friendly and people friendly! This is a great place to relax and read. It tends to be busier on weekends but, if you can make it out on a weekday, it's beautiful and so calming. The beach is close to a couple of trailheads and down the road from the visitor's center! The area provides a great place to observe wildlife as many animals, birds, and flowers inhabit it. People have seen whales out in the bay at the site, and I'm hoping to see one myself this season. read more

Rodeo Beach is breathtaking! It is so beautiful that I would always come back. This is the perfect place to study geology and erosions, because of the sea rocks and cliffs. read more
