It was pretty empty when we first walked in

Sousol is a cool space! I love the wallpaper and pink couches. The drinks are on the higher end of what I'm willing to pay for cocktails but they're good! I think the least expensive alcoholic cocktail was $18. I had the mango crush, which was served in a fish-shaped cup. The drink was good, but the cup was heavy and awkward. I definitely wouldn't go to sousol as an everyday "let's get a drink!" Option but it was fun for a special occasion.

Fantastic spot for cocktails and delicious GF food! The ambiance is cozy and modern. This is a great option when you can't get reservations into Kaan because it's always booked! We reserved two spots fairly easily and came on a Friday night and sat at the bar. Everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable. They also have a wide variety of mocktails. We got an order of the salt cod fritters which paired well with our drinks. I liked the entry way to get inside. Look for the pink lighting!

Located next to the very popular Kann, sousol is a *kind of* hidden bar, but that doesn't mean it's not popular! I came alone without a reservation and had to wait in a line for about 15 minutes on Saturday night. The security was very kind and we ended up chatting for a bit. The bar is actually located downstairs and you walk through a hall before getting to it. Inside it's dim, with lots of comfy seating and a large bar area for more seating. I sat at the bar. I ordered 2 gin and tonics and some nuts when I was there. The nuts were delicious. In the end, my total came out to be ~$60. As I just ordered 2 simple drinks and some nuts, I was a bit surprised by the total. When I asked the bartender why the gin and tonics were ~$20 each, she said it was because of the brand of gin. Although I didn't mind that much, I was taken aback because she had never asked which kind of gin I wanted. The fact that a simple gin and tonic cost more than some of their cocktails was a bit baffling. In addition, there's a 22% service charge that is automatically added to all parties. I totally understand an automatic charge to large parties, but if it's 1-2 people and you're charging an automatic 22% service charge, why aren't prices just raised to properly pay employees? It felt a bit icky after the whole drinks situation, so I don't think I will be coming back here.

YES. YES. YES. 1000 Times yes. Sousol is the hidden gem associated with Kann. A bit of a different flavor to the drinks and dishes but still the Caribbean flair. I LOVE the ambiance there. First we stopped at the stairs after entering and told the host we didn't have reservations and were happy to sit at the bar. GOOD CHOICE y'all. There was another couple there in front of us that he spoke to and handled just before us. Then he called down and told us both we could go down. It's super unassuming as you walk up and seems a bit secretive. The host sat us at the bar and it's not a big space. It's intimate. It feels like an excellent date night venue. Or girls night. Elegant, fun and cozy. We were greeted by Mook, the male bartender that evening. He asked if we had ever been and I said NO. So he proceeded to tell us that they're like Kann's rowdy brother put in the basement. Frankly I have to say it was MUCH quieter and more intimate at SouSol than Kann. There was NOTHING rowdy about Sousol. It was intimate, cozy, but didn't feel pretentious. It's more like the precursor to Kann or the wind down afterwards. The cocktails were excellent. Memorable. Flavorful. Mook made me a cocktail based on flavor profiles I like and it was a delight. The taro chips and guacamole with chili oil were PHENOMENAL. So much flavor and not too spicy either. Mook educated me on Mezcal, tequila and Clairin Communal Rum. I REALLY enjoyed our experience there, as did my husband. And Mook was basically the reason it was FAR greater service than Kann. We mentioned having a reservation there and he asked what time and told us he would make sure we would get up there in time. Honestly, it felt very 5 star as far as the attentiveness we received. Cozy and comfortable, delicious, fun and inviting. Perfect. We will absolutely be BACK!!! Our friends went to Kann the next weekend, and on our recommendation, stopped at SouSol. They sang the same praises I had. And they had a female bartender. So clearly Sousol knows how to rock service and make people love it here!!!

DLO Seriz cocktail. Excellent!!
Matthew H.

I'll start with the positives and there are many. The focus on flavors is the real star of the show. Almost everything was delicious with standouts being the guacamole, smashed potatoes, curry chicken and steak bites. Favorite cocktail was the DLO Seriz. Tostones rellenos was the only disappointment, with surprisingly little flavor. I removed stars for a couple reasons. For what you pay (bill was almost $400) I don't think the service or atmosphere justify the expense. Servings sizes are very small for the price. So... be prepared for the pricing. They also add a 22% tip and don't tell you which just bugs me. I've seen that a lot in Portland in particular. Finally, while I love music, it was too loud for the vibe of the place and made everyone have to shout to be heard which snowballed the overall volume to a level that was almost comical. I still think it's worth checking out, as the flavors are outstanding, but know it comes at a fairly steep price.

After my visit to Kann, I said I wouldn't ever be back.. but a girl had a credit left over from the inKind app and if you know me, you know I never let the $ go to waste. I came into Sousòl with a friend with LOW expectations. But I was humbled. You walk around the side of Kann to get in and it has this very hidden gem feel. You talk to a nice man outside and take a flight of stairs (there's an elevator if needed) down to this mysterious little door, behind a curtain to this absolute beauty of a bar. True Kind of a speak easy vibe. There's lots of seating, and we were sat along the back wall. I had the pleasure of being served by Gregory himself, and thought the universe was playing some sort of game on me for my poor review of Kann. I came before a rush and on a weeknight so the vibes were greats. Not to mention the food was much better than upstairs. Service was prompt and great. I'll be coming back!

Jungle Phoenix cocktail

This is a great speakeasy. The basement vibe is close but not claustrophobic and the decor is perfect with a collection of low tables and easy chairs with banquette's along the wall. The seating options easily accommodate an intimate pair up to a larger group of friends. We went with friends the Friday after Thanksgiving. The service was great. Two in our party forgot their ID's, which are required at check in for everyone, no exceptions. But they were happy to seat half our party while the others ran back to get theirs. Joshua was our server and he was fantastic! Attentive, unerring in his recommendations, but also gave us space to talk. The cocktail and zero proof options are extensive. Something for almost every taste, but the best by far was the Jungle Phoenix, pictured. These are craft cocktails, not Tiki, despite the Afro-Caribbean theme, but Tiki-style flavors are everywhere. The menu is small plates, perfect for sharing. We had the saltfish fritters (Accra), the shrimp cups (Tostones Rellenos), habanero glazed wings (Baja Pepper Glaze Wings), flat bread (Doubles), and jerk chicken (Jamaican Curry). Loved all of it. My favorite were the wings, because of the spice, but others in my party preferred the shrimp, which we ordered twice. You should definitely order a variety and share. Then get more of what you liked as they bring it out as it's ready. Another thing we like about this place is they are in the inKind network, a fairly new payment app for restaurants around the country. Only wish there were more in the Portland area that use it. This was our second visit. Will definitely be back.

*7/1/23 Update - overcharged $53.35 making 3 cocktails and a glass of Pinot a total of $139.75. Yikes!!! We had 3 cocktails at $18.75 each and a glass of wine for $15.75. They included gratuity and didn't tell us, so after receving the bill for $119.75, I added another $20. If you do the math, our bill should have been $72 and adding 20% gratuity would make it a total of $86.40. But they charged me $119.75 and I added $20 for a total of $139.75 for four drinks!!!! Seriously? We could have had a nice dinner somewhere for that price. It Is so dark inside that I didn't catch the error until I got home. $139.75 - 86.40 = an overcharge of $53.35. That is so wrong! I called sousol that same night and again the next day and left a message. No one has returned my call. Tomorrow I will call my credit card company and dispute the charges. Prices are already high and then to overcharge, add gratituity and not tell you, is unconscionable. Be forewarned! -------- Swanky! Once you enter through the pink velvet curtains of this basement speakeasy, you are transported to a scene that is not a typical Portland bar. The gorgeous dark green tropical wallpaper sets a sexy mood and those pink velvet couches are the exclamation point! The bar itself has lots of seating and the liquor bottles backlit against the mirrorEd wall is a work of art. Hand crafted cocktails is what this place is all about. Inventive ingredients including dried fruits and various herbs mixed with spirits, bitters and juices are presented like pieces of art with edible flowers adorning the top. The drinks taste as good as they look, and for $18-20 a piece, they should! What is even more special is sousol has a menu of non alcoholic drinks and they the put same care, creation and presentation into these beverages. Sousol is inclusive, not just for people of different races and preferences, but a bar for those who consume alcohol and those that don't. Everyone is welcome and the menu, which is also gluten free, reflects this. The food looked divine but since we had scored early reservations at kaan, both owned and run by James Beard winner Gregory Gourdet, we did not sample the food menu. But we will! I can't wait to go back. Gregory came down to the bar area and sat next to us. I'm a foodie so was excited to congratulate him on his recent win. He was very gracious and humble giving credit to all who work there and the customers who dine at sousol. The entry to sousol is on SE 6th, a few steps from SE Ash, around the corner from the entrance to kaan. There is a bouncer by the door, and usually a line. The bouncer checks your id, sends a text downstairs and you wait for a response. The bouncer lets you in, and when you get downstairs and enter through the pink velvet curtains, you are greeted and they decide where you will sit. We were seated at the bar and had front view to the bartenders turning out the beautiful cocktails. The process is part of the experience and lets you know immediately, this isn't your typical bar. Especially in Portland where casual breweries are more the norm. I'm thrilled to have this sexy, swanky bar in Portland, perfect for special occasions or no reason at all other than a fun night out.

Look, the ambiance and service is good. The food is also good. The prices... ridiculous for what you get. All the cocktails AND mocktails are 3oz pours. It felt severely overpriced. The food was excellent and the portions are half of what they are upstairs at Kann. Pretty disappointing. Kann is phenomenal and definitely a better pick than sousòl. But if you're balling out of control def go to both.

I've been to Kann twice. This was my first adventure to Sousol. For the most part, was a lovely experience. The food was as good as upstairs - they take a slightly different approach than Kann - it's brought to life with a broader Caribbean flair. The flavors were great! We tried six dishes. The one thing for me is that in some of the dishes, the spice was slightly over powering. It wasn't "too spicy" by any means, but felt that the spice, take down two notches, would have amplified the dish just a bit more. But was still a delight to try these new things! Ambiance is awesome! See photo. The service - our server was so kind and made great recommendations for us. The one oppy I see here was through observation and experience. She seemed to be a "one thing at a time" type server. I.e. we ordered wine. She passed by it several times to help tables directly next to us. Had she kept an eye open for the wine she could have easily placed it at our table while not taking away from the table next to us experience. That happened a few times. We had been waiting for a good 10-15 minutes once we had taken our last sip - probably 25 or so minutes since our food finished - dirty plates and dishes were still in front of us and I had to go up to the bar to ask for the check. For reference, it wasn't a super busy evening. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would. Great time with a lovely friend, and really enjoyed!

Kim L.

Only went here for drinks so I can only comment on that. The cocktails were tropical and yummy but at a steep price of $20-$25 per drink. Looks like prices have gone up since they first opened. Also gratuity is automatically added to the check so keep that in mind when signing the bill. I'm not a fan of restaurants and bars that do this because it's very easy to overlook and overtip if you don't check carefully. Overall this cocktail bar is a nice addition in SE Portland and I would come here again on a special occasion.

After enjoying Kann in September, we were inspired to check out Sousòl. The cocktails were amazing and the steak bites, wings, and peanut butter ice cream sandwich were all delicious!

Warmer Winters

Sousol is really a vibe! An underground bar below Kann, a Gregory Gourdet concept, moody and committed to its theme. At first entry, the low light level and loud music was almost overwhelming but we were glad we stayed to adjust. It really is a cool setting with all sorts of folks - couples to families to groups of friends. Hmm, what else? Service was great. The bathrooms in the stairwell lobby area were clean but not decorated to theme. I adore the tree wallpaper and it hides doors so well. I like the menu's descriptions - like "subtly nutty" or "seductive and layered" (a fun game is to pick which one describes you best?). Reasons to knock it one star, for me personally: - They had a bouncer on street level who checked our IDs, sent a text (to the hostess? to see if there was room? there was plenty of space), and made some kinda uncomfortable conversation while waiting for a text reply. I don't mind an ID check but the rest of it seemed weird. - Each of the three cocktails I tried (one I drank fully, two I had sips of) were almost good but slight flavor misses. For example, the Warmer Winter just tasted like a generic fruity rum drink. Compared to the excellent menu upstairs, they were a mild letdown. - The skewer sticking through the cucumber in the Banner Bearer was incredibly sharp, you could hurt your hand in the dim lighting. So, it's definitely somewhere I would take out-of-town visitors who were wanting to visit a cool cocktail bar in town. And I might be back myself to try the food to see if it compares to Kann's.

They are dedicated to providing utensils and napkins. How does a new arrival even know where the front-of-house person is? Restaurant 101. The front-of-house is behind the bar and not very attentive to new arrivers. New arrivers are your customers! That person is also the final bill person. By observation they seemed idle much of the time. Next, the upholstery of my seat was stained. Either clean it to invisibility or replace it. Any restaurant should check the condition of tables and chairs daily. At this level of restaurant, it is basic. We are not a dive. I was there for their loss leader crab sandwich special but ordered more, so I was not a loss leader customer. Bring a real napkin because a dish with small pieces will have small pieces fall out. The server from the kitchen brought small paper cocktail napkins. Instead I had to get a napkin and fork from the utensils and napkins cart myself. I guess, oddly, becoming familiar with where napkins were, thinking they were front-of-house, was useful in disguise! No refilling water. The dishes seem to be served by kitchen staffers. It is on the second floor, aside from the stains, pleasant, and there are public spaces in this hotel for meetups and meetings. But it needs a review of customer experience design, who does what, and the customer journey, stat. If Marriott is doing this nationally, they are failing. Good design is not expensive, it can operate at any price point. Maybe robots will improve things? None of the staffers should be blamed, it is design and management which are lacking.

To speak about Teardrop Lounge, I should probably start with this:…read more Ladies and gentlemen, I present my favorite cocktail bar. Not the best -- I'm not arrogant enough to claim that. I haven't been to every cocktail bar in Portland, and saying something is the best usually says more about your lack of experience than your conviction. But favorite? That I can stand behind. And I want to get that out of the way early, because of the amount of praise I'm about to pour on this place -- fully earned, completely intentional. The biggest crime here is that I only discovered it two weeks ago, after living in Portland for a year. It had been recommended to me countless times, and I ignored it. A mistake. A painful one. But now that I've found it, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm not typically an Old Fashioned drinker. In fact, I usually hate them. But somewhere between curiosity and too many episodes of Mad Men, I decided to try one anyway -- fully expecting to confirm my bias. Instead, it completely flipped me. Bright, almost citrus-forward in a way that felt unusual but entirely intentional. Balanced, smooth, just enough burn to remind you what you're drinking without overwhelming it. It was the first time I actually understood the appeal. I'm pretty sure I grew a few chest hairs that night. That alone would've been impressive. But it didn't stop there. The space is beautiful -- clean, intentional, but not cold. The staff are excellent: personable, engaged, and most importantly, authentic. Not scripted, not performative. The kind of people you actually want to talk to, and hopefully, eventually be on a first-name basis with. Now, all of that gets it close to a perfect score. But what pushes it over the edge -- what makes this place stick -- is the White Russian. One of the first drinks I ever had. My dad's drink. Not because of The Big Lebowski -- that came later -- but because it's just always been his thing. And at some point, it became mine too. Typically, when bars try to "elevate" a White Russian, they ruin it. They overthink it. Swap ingredients, tweak ratios, add unnecessary flair. And more often than not, it ends in disappointment. Teardrop does the opposite. They respect it -- but refine it. The coffee liqueur actually tastes like coffee. The heavy cream is properly integrated, not just dumped on top. The vodka -- whatever they're using -- is clean, present, and perfectly measured. There's a subtle complexity to it without losing what makes the drink what it is. It's the best White Russian I've ever had. No hesitation. I've gone back twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. If someone asked me what my death row drink would be -- this specific cocktail, from this specific bar, is in the conversation. Easily. Teardrop Lounge doesn't just make great cocktails. It reminds you why cocktails matter in the first place. And that's why it's my favorite.

Creative without being weird, and strong without being sloppy. What really stood out was the price point. For the quality of cocktails, the prices felt very reasonable compared to similar craft cocktail bars in other cities. The vibe was also great -- relaxed, cozy, and not pretentious. It felt like a place where you could come for a special drink experience without feeling like you had to "perform" or order off a rigid menu. We liked it so much we actually came back a second time during our trip. Highly recommend if you're into well-crafted cocktails, friendly bartenders, and a laid-back but elevated atmosphere.
