I'm not a really big sandwich girl - something about sandwiches are too boring... so a sandwich better be damn good in order for me to really enjoy it. And i enjoyed Soulwich. I've been there multiple times and have tried two sandwiches: the Sesame Chili Tuna and the Indonesian Ginger BBQ with pork... I was really excited about the tuna because I thought it would be slices of seared tuna in the sandwich - I was disappointed to see that it was actually more like canned tuna between bread. However, I really liked the Indonesian BBQ! Super flavorful and delicious. The richness of the meat is balanced by the tangy freshness of the pickled vegetables. I also really love their cole slaw! It's not your traditional veggie mix soaked in mayo and various other artery-clogging ingredients. It's very light but really flavorful. Only small complaint I have is their sandwiches can get kinda oily... unless I'm mistaking the oil for the sauces, but I'm pretty sure it's oil, and it makes me cringe when it drips out of the sandwich after every bite. read more

The service, and the seating, have drastically improved. Bravo! The food is really very good. Basically, when you order here, it looks like you're ordering the same base sandwich on a ciabatta-like loaf with a few sauce options. Some of the sandwiches also have different ingredients added to the base mix. We ordered the singapore tikka and the chicken wasabi teriyaki. Both were good. The sandwiches have really awesomely fresh tasting vegetables and the chicken was really good, too. The CWT had caramelized onions which were almost out of this world tasty. The sandwiches were great, as were the sauces, but I wonder if they were a little drowned in sauce. I could easily take a pass on the chips; though they are good and home-made they are also not particularly special examples of that category. The slaw on the other hand is really tasty and a great compliment to the sandwich. 1st time here. The attendant very friendly, good service. She recommended the ginger bbq with Burmese fries and I followed her suggestion. She got confused and instead of pork she served me chicken. She apologized and offered to prepare the Pork sandwich, but I kept the chicken sandwich. Flavor: delish! It reminded me a bah mi sandwich. The chicken with the spices was excellent! Their soft drinks are cane sugar, not corn syrup which I prefer in that way. I tried due the 1st time almond cola and it was good. Someone compared it to Jimmy John's at first....oh good god!! Say it ain't so.. that was pure rubbish! Bleh. Conveniently, Soulwich is right by my area so I waddled into this cute shop one weekend to settle the hype. This place is not really worth the money. The Singapore Tikki, and a few other sandwiches I've tried, are mostly just shredded carrot. My husband would probably give this a 1, and me a 3, so I'm settling on a 2. We came here one afternoon, and regret not having gone somewhere else. We ordered the Indonesian Ginger BBQ sandwich with chicken and the Thai Grilled with pork. The Thai Grilled was very bland, the bread got oversoaked throughout, and the pork tasted borderline microwaved - it was kinda chewy, and not great. The Indonesian Ginger BBQ was much better, though the chicken was just ok, including a few chewy/fatty/yucky bites. I did love all the shredded veggies - well prepped. The homemade chips are ok - nothing THAT special. They're cold not hot, and the burmese spices were alright- sorta spicy sweet and again, not bad, just not notable. The selection of drinks is good - lots of interesting choices. I think my husband's dry cucumber soda was the only thing he liked. I picked up a sandwich and a side of slaw today to go because I was rushing to a meeting. I ordered the Indonesian Ginger BBQ with pork and it was ready really quickly. The girl who took my order was very sweet and nice and wrapped everything up for me really well. After maybe a 15 minute walk outside in freezing weather, I made it to my meeting and found that my sandwich was still pretty warm! I really enjoyed the crustiness of the bread. It was toasted really well and it wasn't soggy at all! There was a little too much cilantro for my taste and it kept falling out with the picked carrots (those were crunchy and sweet and a little acidic, which I liked) so that was kind of a huge mess. The pork was flavorful and delicious and I actually thought the flavors were balanced just right. The slaw was a little more meh, and I didn't finish that, but the sandwich was pretty delicious (and one of the messiest I've ever eaten). A good vegan sandwich is hard to find in Evanston, but Soulwich certainly has several to choose from. I had the Indonesian ginger BBQ with seitan and vegan aioli and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other sandwiches. The owner is really helpful and friendly. The unfiltered gingerale is SO GOOD, and so is the pomegranate lemonade. I had slaw as my side, but the chips are also really good. The Burmese is spicy! I'm giving it 5 stars because the menu is straightforward and I feel like I am getting exactly what I read, but it tastes so much better. Also the owner and staff were so friendly and genuinely nice, like they really want to make sure you return. Really enjoyed the banter and exchange even though we were taking it to go. I live in Jeff Park, but I'll return eventually to try more of the sandwiches and love that they will work with vegetarian options as well. I'm not vegetarian, but I like to go sans meat sometimes, so I appreciate that flexibility. Husband had the Indonesian BBQ with chicken and the sesame chili tuna. I had the paneer fig sandwich. This is my favorite restaurant in all of Evanston, and whenever I can I come here. These sandwiches turned me into a cucumber and cilantro lover, neither of which I liked before I had this food!! The chips are incredible - the owner and his wife are great people, very nice, they remember their loyal customers and make suggestions and have great senses of humor. And the decor is great! You can sit outside during the summer and it's in a nice little spot in Evanston, downtown but not too busy. I like the singapore tikka sandwich the most, but I've had the other curry one (name I cannot recall) and I think the BBQ sandwich, which I wasn't excited for but ended up tasting phenomenal. Not sure as to how much soul was supposed to be present in my sandwich, or really what would make it soulful, but I just felt like I had a regular ol' sandwich. The fact that I didn't feel like going somewhere else, and also that I really wanted to try the Indonesian Ginger BBQ Sandwich, made me suck it up. I ended up eating with my coat close around me and my scarf on. Not happy about that at all. So, you already know what sandwich I ordered, for which I chose steak as meat option. With your sandwich, you get a choice of house-made chips with your choice of dusting (burmese, wasabi) or plain. I chose wasabi and got a Ginger Ale. I should have gotten the slaw. I guess Sullivan's Steakhouse has me expecting too much when I see house-made chips on a restaurant's menu. After the first taste, I only ate a little more because they were there. The sandwich... it's made in the style of bahn mi which means a fistful of cilantro still on the stems. If you're not a fan of cilantro, make sure to request yours without. I like the cilantro, but not the stems, so I spent a good deal of time plucking the leaves off to eat on my sandwich. Other sandwich info... the steak was entirely too soft for me. Or, should I say too rare? It also was room temperature at best.Trying to bite into that while in a sandwich was not an enjoyable experience for me. So, outside of the cilantro stems and soft steak, everything else about the sandwich was great. The bread was excellent, as well as the sauce. The veggies were crisp and fresh. I would definitely go with chicken or pork next time, hoping they will fare better. The ginger ale is Bruce Cost Fresh Ginger Original Unfiltered Ginger Ale, and it is superb. Sweetened with cane sugar with a wonderful, but not too powerful, ginger bite. It truly complemented the flavors in the sauce of the sandwich. Not cheap at $2.50 /bottle, but well worth it. I wasn't won over on this trip, but I plan on going back to try a different meat option and a different side. I will stay away from the steak. It'd be great if i could get stemless cilantro, too, but that may be asking for too much given the owner's response when he asked me how I liked my meal and I informed him of my feelings on the cilantro. It's nice to see fledgling business thrive in a rough economy and competitive marketplace. Especially ones with tasty sandwiches. Seating is limited, but it falls under cozy than cramped. I had the sesame chili tuna. For $7.75, you get a pretty good deal. Warm toasted bread with pickeled carrot and cucumber with no mayo. You'd be surprised how tasty no mayo tuna can be. The owner of this restaurant says he and his wife (the chef) are aiming for something original, and they've hit the mark. I've never had a sandwich quite like the one I had here, and it was delicious. I had the Singapore Tikka sandwich vegetarian style (fake meat), along with the side of Burmese chips. It was very filling, and I could have easily split the sandwich with another person. The owner also tossed in an extra side of Asian cole slaw, which also was very good. The sandwich bread comes daily from the same bakery that supplies Rick Bayless' XOCO down in the city. Perfect lunchtime sandwiches! Came here for the first time today, and my friend and I both ordered the Indonesian Ginger BBQ sandwiches, one steak and one chicken. I really love this fusion place for lunch. Their sandwiches are extremely juicy. You can also have them make the sandwich into a salad, so it's a different spin on their already bold flavors. Neat little joint in Evanston with tons of interesting Asian-inspiring sandwich creations! I've been here a couple times and favorite has got to be the indonesian bbq pork sandwich. Flavors are all there, sweet, spicy, salty, YUM! Pork was soft, vegetables crunchy! I didn't like the saladbox as much, the #1 salad bowl was a bit sweet to my liking. Place is clean, good with a few friends, and even by yourself! Portions are big, you can even save half for later. The sandwiches comes with chips and you can choose between homemade and Burmese. They were quite busy, as there were several large carry-out orders placed in front of us. The people working were very friendly; you can tell they care a lot about their restaurant and how they treat their customers. I did a take out with an Indonesian ginger BBQ chicken, came back to my office and opened it up. The bread was soaked in soy cause and was already leaking. Eating this sandwich was a struggle, the bread broke due to the sogginess and I sat with multiple paper towels under it and beside it to wipe my hands and mouth after every few bites. I don't know if they messed it up this one time by adding to much soy sauce, but I would be very skeptic to go back there again ( this was my first time here). The slaw was okay, not great. On my first visit to Soulwich I sampled a sandwich and a salad. My signature sandwich was the vegetarian Indonesian Ginger BBQ. The bread was a nicely toasted French bread with generous pickled carrots, mayo and a lively soy sauce dressing. I chose the vegetarian option which was seitan and was less than satisfied with it. It held the sauce well but the texture was too firm and distracting from the sandwich. I am excited to try the sandwich again with a 'traditional' protein. The chips were a nice, crunchy compliment and though we chose the 'Burmese' option it was difficult to discover their flavor until the bottom of the bag (great flavor combo though). The salad we chose was the Wasabi Caesar Chicken Salad. It was a generous portion and I was pleasantly surprised to find the chicken to be warm and shredded. Though not what I expected, it greatly added to the salad and overall it was very tasty. The salad is combined with rice, making it a filling lunch option. I would caution against it's name however, I did not fully taste the wasabi or caesar flavors - more of a sweet Asian vinaigrette. I will be visiting again. Downgrading my review. I really liked my sandwich last time, and came again. This time, I split the Sesame Chili Tuna with a friend. The tuna tasted fishy. My brother is always complaining about how the food around here is so boring and always the same so when I came across Soulwich I thought this would be a good place to take him. We went on a Monday around 12:30 and there was only one other group of 4, but I'm assuming it's because Northwestern students were probably already gone for the holidays. We were greeted by a very personable man (seemed like the owner) who asked if we've ever been there before. We hadn't and he gave us a menu and recommendations. I ordered the Indonesian BBQ (pork), my brother the Chili Tuna and my mother the Burmese Curry (chicken) because we wanted to try a little of each. These are all sandwiches that come with asian slaw or your choice of chips (regular or burmese flavor). The service was fast and and the sandwiches were a good size, toasted and warm. My favorite by far was the Indonesian BBQ, the pork was pulled and smokey with a sweet sauce reminiscent of teriyaki. It went perfectly with the pickled carrots, cilantro and chili aioli. Felt like an awesome flavor party in my mouth. Burmese flavored chips had a little kick, but I wouldn't necessarily call it spicy. I wasn't as impressed with the other sandwiches. The Burmese Curry would benefit from a little more curry flavor and the tuna was a bit on the dry side. However, overall it was a nice place to go for a twist on the typical sandwich and it satisfied my brother's desire for more interesting food. I will definitely go back when I have the chance. I passed by Soulwich at least three times. I always get my banh mi sandwiches from the asian shops in argyle/broadway or Nhu lan so I was a bit hesitant to try it out. I typically head towards my safe-zones around the area (places I already like) for example chipotle, jimmy johns, panera, etc. I was feeling really hangry so I decided to try Soulwich out. I got the Indonesian Ginger BBQ with Chicken. It was really good, 5/5. The carrots and red cabbage were great addition to it. The BBQ sauce was the best part even though it dripped quite a lot. There's no way to eat it neatly since the sauce keeps dripping and the sandwich is big. I walked in there hungry and came out stuffed. I'm pretty sure I ordered a Spice Grill with chicken (to go) but it had neither eggplant, tamarind, nor onions in it. Whatever I had was good but not well mixed and kinda boring. It was chicken in a creamy white sauce, with the standard carrots and cilantro (good in the first few bites, meh after that). The veggies are piled on top of the chicken so when you bite in, they're constantly falling out (through the opening in the bun). The bread is perfectly soft and holds up to the liquidy sauce (ideally it would be whole wheat). Filling amount for an ~$8 sandwich Delicious slaw!! I had seen Soulwich on Yelp and also saw some friends check in on Foursquare. I had been meaning to come in for a while now and just drove over for lunch today. I got there before any sort of lunch rush, so it was empty (but continued to fill while I was there). The decor is nice, clean, and bright. I got the Burmese Coconut Curry Chicken sandwich (I love that they have seitan as an option too), Burmese spiced homemade potato chips, and a bottle of Fresh Ginger unfiltered ginger ale. For drinks, they also have coconut water and bottled water...but no wasted plastic here! They're in cardboard containers (kind of like the Egg Beaters containers). The sandwich was really delicious. Locally made roll, shredded pickled carrots, large sliced cucumber, whole cilantro, coconut curry sauce, and chicken. The roll had a good amount of "bite" to it. Good amount of chicken. Not over-sauced. It was a little spicy, but not overpowering. Lots of carrots, which made it fall apart a bit as I ate it, but I didn't care. The veggies were all really fresh and tasty. The potato chips were VERY spicy and really flavorful. My mouth was still burning for a bit after I left and I loved every second of it! They also have plain and wasabi chips too. I know I wrote a review for this place before. I swear I did! I must have! This place is awesome. I like their selection, I like the variety, they deliver and the size is good. What's not to like? The fact that almost everything is a veg friendly option on top of that is just a gigantic plus. The fact that they don't try to go overboard as a small sandwich shop provides even more kudos to their style. To digress: a lot of restaurants, etc try to do a million different things with a million different ingredients. It's horrible, and it's rightfully called out on restaurant impossible constantly. It's harder on the chefs, you have ingredients not being used if people don't buy em, etc. Keep it simple. Soulwich does that. Simple, and tasty. Tasty. Tasty, tasty, tasty. Reasonably priced, inexpensive, tasty, quiet, fresh, and fairly healthy. This is the place you want to succeed, and the owners are people you want in your business community. I would chide myself for forgetting it's there until I saw it; now I've been there enough that i look forward to lunch there when I get up in the morning, or stopping for dinner on my way home from the city. Goeth if you like your food crunchy, tasty, and fresh, and all the other adjectives I put up top. Very relaxing place, and they're friendly to vegetarians. After looking at all the Yelp! Reviews, my hubby and I decided to try this last night. We live in Evanston, but decided to have it delivered. By far the WORSE delivery experience ever. They said it would take 15 min...and it took well over 45 min to get out food. Yikes! However, this is no digs to the restaurant or the food (which is incredible) --they use an outside delivery service, and I'm not sure who it is....but they suck! So if you live in or around Evanston and are thinking about having this delivered---don't! Now on to the food---all I can say is wowsers! I had the Indonesian bbq and it was incredible. The sauce was great---a mix between sweet and tangy with hints of cilantro and lime--yummy in my tummy! Can't wait to try their other menu items. I wasn't that impressed with the slaw or the chips, they were ok, but the sandwich was a knock out experience. I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

Inspired, satisfying flavors. Great value. Really welcoming and very very very accommodating! We were here with friends who were catching a flight and loved the food so much that they wanted more for the plane. The owner prepped a sandwich kit so they could avoid having a soggy mess on the flight. Great guy! read more

Yesterday, I came to Soulwich for the first time in years. Today, I had it for dinner. I will probably eat this again tomorrow, tbh. In short, their food is so so so good, but more importantly, it lives up to the restaurant's name and tagline: "Asian Foodshop With Soul" (I'm assuming this is their tagline since it's written on the to-go bag). I don't know how, but their sandwiches make me feel like a close friend (who just happens to be a great chef!) made it for me. This is true comfort food. As a lonely graduate student, yes taste, price, proximity to campus, etc. are all important factors, but the ability for food to make my heart happy - that is incredible. I got the Singapore Tikka with chicken yesterday, and today I had the Indonesian Ginger BBQ with chicken. The Tikka was a little bit less flavorful than the BBQ sandwich, but still really good nonetheless. The sandwiches are topped with cilantro and lots of shredded carrots. The sides I had both days were the slaw - which is very crisp and light (unlike your typical slaw)! The ingredients they use are fresh, the food is healthy, and they toast your sandwich - what more can you ask for? Oh, and like others have mentioned, an ADORABLE family owns and operates this place (which probably contributes to why coming here makes me feel so good). After conversing easily with the lady while placing my order, watching the man do the same with another customer and seeing their little girl, this place was instantly four stars for me - and I hadn't even tasted the food yet! I wish I didn't waste the past two or three years eating out at other restaurants in Evanston. Seriously. This is officially one of my favorite places to eat, period. read more
