About ten/twelve years ago I first began my practice at Detroit Yoga. I arrived from a year or two…read morescanty home practice with tapes, and before that I practiced at other studios for 2-3 years. And yet with all that history I still knew nothing to speak of. After the first few classes I attended I knew there was something different about Detroit Yoga. The atmosphere was serious and rigorous, while at the same time a place of teaching and learning, and I couldn't get enough. I went to as many classes per day, per week that my schedule would allow. The most remarkable credit to Jason's teaching is to look at us years later. It seems like there was only a handful of Ashtanga students when I started. No one could float, and no one could bump up. Now, thanks to Jason's teaching ability and patience, that is a very different story. He has taught us so much and his encouragement has allowed us to advance in our practice way beyond what I, personally, thought I was capable of. All of that is just telling the story of our physical practice. Detroit Yoga is, truly, a place to improve in body, mind, and spirit. Jason's questions and answers at the end of practice, along with the reading material he recommends to us are invaluable for deeper physical and spiritual development. Not only is Detroit Yoga a studio to work and sweat, but it is, even more, a school of self improvement.

You are assigned your spot in the room. No socks are permitted. And don't even think about bringing your water bottle in with you. More importantly, there isn't a hint of instruction. He calls out the poses in "yoga-ese," and the hard core people snap into action. As for me, who has no damned clue what the words meant, I was left to scramble behind, trying to duplicate what they were doing. Poorly. The "instructor"/owner is not remotely friendly. If he is seeking additional clientele, his aloofness, if not downright hostility, certainly isn't helping his cause.

The trip was planned out and organized with 4 different yoga sessions, a guided silent hike (so incredible), lots of free time, and seriously gourmet meals provided for breakfast and dinner each day. The lodge we stayed at was out of a movie - it was absolutely huge and so gorgeous. There's a lake on site with canoeing and paddle boating, a waterfall leading into the lake, and a covered and cushioned seat at the top of the waterfall. There's multiple firepits and fireplaces outside, and we sat outside at night and watched the stars and went in the huge hot tub. This place was seriously out of control beautiful. The weather was 60 and sunny (SO GORGEOUS SUNNY) every day and it truly made the whole experience that much more magical. Besides all the natural beauty and adventuring available on site at the lodge, it's of course right in the hocking hills area, so some of the best hikes in the US are a 5 minute drive. During the day on Saturday my sister and I hiked up to a rock climbing and repelling area and ate our lunch while watching people scale rockfaces and repel back down. It was seriously glorious. I've never been on a yoga retreat before, but this was so much fun. Jessica (owner) is an outstanding host and I just cannot stop gushing about this retreat, you guys. Her yoga practice is so caring and thought provoking and honest, it's just beautiful. Everything was great. 5 stars!

My experience working with Dr. Cecily has been nothing short of wonderful. I've learned so much (in a short time!) about proper body mechanics, in addition to core strengthening and posture improvement exercises. I'd been living (painfully) with a weak pelvic floor, and carrying stress in my lower back for such a long time. I am overwhelmed by how much better I feel as a result of Dr. Cecily's expertise and care. I am so grateful to her! The studio has an inviting feel and the RF team welcomes patrons with a smile. The environment is friendly and unpretentious, and especially during the pandemic, I feel that my health and wellness is a priority to the team!

I am not new to Pilates and the owner was relentless in trying to gaslight me into buying a package for private sessions, which I cannot afford. The owner doesn't know to conduct herself ethically, and they repeatedly over charged my credit card to the point where I had to report them to my credit card company as fraud and had to cancel the card they had on file for me. The owner is a raving lunatic and so abusive. She yells at and demeans her staff in front of clients. It's no wonder there's such a high turn over with instructors, and anyone good instructor ends up quitting. The owner is socially inappropriate, she talks down to and is condescending to clients, she over shares intimate details of her dysfunctional personal life with clients, she has zero personal and professional boundaries, and clearly has a problem with alcohol. She's beyond inappropriate with clients, and has a history of engaging in sexual relationships with married male clients and when caught, then cries that she's a victim of sexual assault. She is mentally unstable! She has instructors who just became certified running her teacher training, which is beyond inappropriate. With so many Pilates studios in Metro Detroit, do yourself a favor and avoid this awful place like the plague. You'll thank me later!

The space is really lovely, warm & welcoming, as are all the staff, front desk, owners, teachers & classmates. Experienced attentive teachers & a philosophy of 'adapt the post to your body, not the body to the pose'. I'm very happy with the instructors I've had & am constantly learning & challenging myself, which I really enjoy. Second, I took a Hatha class and mentioned to the teacher that I just started Ashtanga yoga last year and the studio closed. She said very sarcastically "This is not Ashtanga yoga!" Which made me feel unconformtable. Third, the class had 0 sight lines. You cannot see the teacher. Direction was very wishy washy. Fourth, I won't be coming back.

Disappointed to say that I'm officially leaving Club Pilates…read more I joined this club with specific weight loss and fitness goals, looking for an uplifting, professional, and safe environment to work out. Instead, my experience with a specific weekend instructor has been incredibly uncomfortable and unprofessional--ranging from her constantly complaining about being tired or sick, to making personal digs at me, and most recently, making a hostile face at me that forced me to walk out of class mid-session. Because of my job, weekends are the only times I can work out. Seeing this instructor's name on the schedule literally raises my blood pressure, and I haven't been able to use the membership I pay for. I want to give a shout-out to Lauren, the manager, who has been absolutely lovely, understanding, and validating every time we've spoken. But unfortunately, understanding isn't enough when little to no action is taken to actually correct the behavior. A gym/studio should be a safe space where you feel cared for and motivated. My first class was great!…read more I had somehow turned off all of my Citizen Yoga email notifications, so I freaked out a little when I realized the class was starting in 10 minutes and I I didn't know how to access it because I never got the confirmation email. I tried calling the studio a few times but it went to voicemail. Luckily, I received an email from Shannon, informing the class that there were intermittent issues with Zoom and the software needed to be updated in order to access class. I replied to Shannons email about 5 minutes before class in a massive panic asking her if she could help me log into the class. I will admit, I wasn't as nice as I should have been in my email (sorry Shannon) but she was still helpful and nice! She helped me get into the class by sending a link and she also turned my notifications back on so that I will be able to access class in the future. Before the class began I was tired and dragging. It was a dreary day and I didn't know if I still felt up for the challenge! I hadn't done a yoga class in a while and I was very nervous that I wouldn't be able to keep up. The teacher was extremely helpful and had great energy. Even though my camera wasn't the best, she still helped me fix my form when she could and provided really easy to follow instruction. I left the class feeling aware and more awake, also feeling calmer than I was before the class started. I am definitely going to add Yoga to my routine! Thanks Citizen Yoga and Shannon for being so awesome!
