This restaurant is dangerously close to me, and I'm trying to fight off the urge to order a quart…read more(or perhaps a gallon?) of their candied yams and spend the day eating it with a giant spoon in front of the TV.
Of course, that's not the only great thing at this restaurant though. My family and I tried their beef ribs, collard greens, hush puppies, and their spicy peach, mango, and honey bourbon wings.
The beef ribs were so tender they practically fell apart (in the right way), and the sauce was bone-suckin' good. The wings were perfectly fried and crispy, and I enjoyed the sauces. They were all veryyyy sweet and delightfully sticky, which I love - but if you're not big on sweet, that's something to keep in mind. My only complaint is, I struggled to taste the different between the spicy peach wings, and the Mango. I liked the Mango a little more, because the flavor was a bit more apparent. The spicy peach had a tinge of smokiness, which helped give it some distinction. But all three sauces (the spicy peach, mango and honey bourbon) kind of just tasted like derivatives of one another with vague differences. I'd love to see the fruit flavors be a little more apparent, but that being said - still delicious.
Now onto the sides; obviously you've gathered I was obsessed with the candied yams. They were mostly soft with occasional bits that were slightly chewy which made the texture more exciting, and once again - super sweet, as you might have gathered from the "candied" aspect. The hush puppies were odd, because I'm not used to seeing them oblong, but they were very good! Nicely seasoned and perfectly fried, a little dry but I couldn't stop eating them so clearly I approved! The Mac n' cheese was decent, not one of my favorite things on the menu but I won't knock it, and finally the collard greens - perfect!!! That's all need be said.
As for atmosphere / service, I can't speak on behalf of atmosphere because we ordered for pickup. For service however, it's kind of a mixed bag. The woman I spoke to was super friendly, and very patient with my questions about spice levels and clarifying a few things on the menu (because there are different versions floating around online so I was a little confused). When the order was ready, they called us to come. We arrived at the time they gave us, but it still took an additional 30 mins. They were very nice about it though, and even gave us some additional coco breads to make up for it - WHICH WERE WONDERFULLY SOFT AND FLUFFY BY THE WAY! Made a candied bacon breakfast sandwich with it the next day... but that's neither here nor there.
I usually don't mind waiting a while anyway, and considering everything that's going on with Covid-19, it's understandable that things may take longer as restaurants and their staff are under far more stress. So if you're going to order, prepare to wait a little, and be patient - it's worth it.
