I'm continuing in my search of better southern food than I can cook in my own kitchen. Yep, I'm still looking.... This is really more of a cafeteria than a restaurant. They have a menu, but certain items are only available on certain days of the week. As in, don't come asking for turkey wings on Friday because they are served on Thursday. So you sort of need "to know" what they are serving on any given day. On this day, they had meatloaf, spaghetti with meat sauce, smothered pork chops, neck bones and baked chicken. I haven't had a smothered pork chop in YEARS so I went for that. A smothered pork chop, IMHO, is a pork chop that has been lightly breaded and pan fried. You make a pan gravy using flour and some of the oil from the pork chop. My mama would throw in some onion, too. You can use water, milk, or broth to thin out the flour/oil mix. You must cook the flour/oil mixture to cook the flour. And how you season your gravy depends on how you seasoned your pork chop. Served with rice and seasoned adequately this can be a small piece of southern heaven. It was not. I'll say this over and over. If the pork chop is BLAND when it is fried, it will be equally BLAND when it is smothered. Fat alone is not seasoning. I can honestly say I ate a pork chop that had no discernible flavor profile. It wasn't salty, it wasn't greasy, it was ... well, meat. And not good meat either. I ate less than half of my pork chop because calories are too hard to burn to waste them on bad food. So the server makes it a point to correct me on calling her beans "butter beans". They are lima beans. Now, I looked this up and according to the Georgia Cooperative Extension the term "lima" and "butter" beans are interchangeable. People tend to call the small beans "butter" and the larger fordhook variety "lima". Your beans were butter beans. But it doesn't really matter what you call them because they were cooked within an inch of their life. You could have smashed those with a cheap plastic spoon and served them to a baby. And the baby probably would have spit them out. They were bland, mushy and like the pork chop lacked any discernible taste. I like my butter beans cooked with okra and having a little bite. Unless I'm spreading it on a taco, I'm not into mushy beans. Now the collard greens were good and that little corn cake was very tasty. If I ever return, I'll just order a large side of greens with cornbread. So there you have it. Another $11 spent in my search of what the ATL calls food like your Grandma would make. Both my grandma's would have thrown in the towel and just gotten in the kitchen and started cooking by now...

Baked chicken meal with white rice and Mac n cheese and corn

I've tasted better . Mac n cheese was ok , baked chicken super salty . The corn was delicious though . It was empty . It's family owned i went around 730-8pm so nothing wasn't fresh . I'll go back during lunch hour where they cooking and having fresh items coming out . It's in the plaza right by zaxbys and taco bell . They take cards and they have a small sit down area . I would give them a try again before i say they are nasty . I caught them on an off day

Fried catfish, ho cakes, mac and cheese, and yams.

Good country food and plenty of it. Hocakes are hard to find these days but worth the wait.

I visited this spot on Easter and overall I had a really great experience. Yes, the wait was long,…read morebut honestly I expected that because of the holiday. If anything, I took it as a good sign. I noticed people weren't leaving or giving up on the line, they were staying and waiting, and to me that says the food must be good. Now let's get into the food... because this is where they really shine. I've had a lot of soul food around Atlanta, and I can honestly say flavor can be hit or miss depending on the place. But whoever is in that kitchen here, they are doing their thing. Everything tasted very homemade, like real deal, cooked with love type of food. The cornbread gave very much old school, just right. The peach cobbler? Absolutely outstanding. It's actually rare to find a restaurant peach cobbler that truly tastes homemade, and this one definitely did. That alone would make me come back. We ordered the beef meatloaf, mac and cheese, collard greens, lima beans, and dressing. The dressing was especially good, again very homemade and full of flavor. The only small thing I would mention is there wasn't any gravy on the dressing, and I would've loved that. The meatloaf was good, but could've used a bit more sauce since it was just a pinch overcooked. Outside of that, everything was really good. The food was flavorful, the portions were solid, and the prices were very affordable. Overall, I'd definitely rate this place highly. I truly enjoyed it and will be coming back. I'll also be recommending it to my family and friends for sure.

What a surprise to find in Forest Park. I've been here so many times for work and never did I know…read morethis was here till it was recommended by a colleague. Talk about good southern BBQ, fair prices, good atmosphere, and EXTREMELY great customer service. Don't even worry about going up to get your food when they call your name, once they see you acknowledge them they bring it to you with a smile and they lay it all out for you. SUPERB. I had the Catfish Nuggets senior combo w/ Potato Salad and the Black Eyes Peas on rice. SO DARN GOOD! I tried my colleagues brisket and the flavor was smokey and delicious. The portions are more than fair, believe me you will probably end up taking stuff to-go unless you have an army of hungry folks with you. Thank you so much for the amazing Customer Service to the Ray's Southern Foods team. You absolutely delivered on all aspects and you earned my five star rating.

Favorite bites this visit were the baked beans and 7 cheese Mac. The pulled pork sandwich was a little dry, but the medium sauce made it perfect. The sweet tea should be illegal at this level of sweetness. Service was friendly. The interior could use some brightening, but this is a great place to eat in or take out.
