Today was one of those days that I just had to have some soul food. As I was heading down the road, I drove past Ms. Movale's Eatery and decided to turn around and head inside. Walking into Ms. Movale's Eatery I was excited. The staff was very friendly and very welcoming. The ambiance was vibrant. The restaurant was clean. And the menu was robust. As this was my first time, I took a moment to scroll the menu in full as there were so many good options. I was torn between Whiting and Wings but finally decided on the wing dinner. The dinners come with 2 sides so I chose Macaroni and Cheese and Cabbage. I went to the cashier, placed my order, paid, and was on my way to wait for my food. As I waited, I enjoyed all the original artwork on the walls and the music that was playing. Though it was almost closing time, the team still kept an upbeat mood and tone going. When my food was ready, I got my plate and was out the door. As soon as I got in the car all I could smell was soul food goodness. Oh my gosh! I smelled seasoning salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and a hint of season all. Babeeeeeeeeee! I was ready to eat. Opening up my tray, the wings were wingettes, however, they were fried to golden brown perfection and seasoned for the tongue pleasing gods. The chicken was hot and fresh and just had to taste one. I just wanted to taste one as I was hungry and just needed something to hold me until I got home. Well, to my surprise, somehow all of my wings were gone by the time I got home. Lmbooooooooooooooooo. Yes yall. I ate every single one on the ride home. Them things were thangannnnnnn. The Macaroni and Cheese was homemade. The flavor profile was exactly as it should be. The texture was creamy and the noodles were tender but not too soft. I would definitely get it again. The cabbage was shredded which made it perfect as a pairing to the wings. It was tender with a hint of crunch just like I like it and the flavor profile had a hint of sweetness. Whew! Whoever made this cabbage understood the entire assignment because babeeeeeeeee. This was cabbage done right. All is all, my experience at Ms. Movale's Eatery was good enough that I will be back. I need to try the fish, pork chops, ox tails, and chicken sandwich. I've been to this place many times over the years. The service there is horrible. The owner which is the owner is very very rude. I called to add to an order because on the DoorDash app it doesn't give you an option to pick your veggies. I was trying to communicate this and add to order. The lady got mad told me to call door dash and after waiting she cancel my order she stated she is busy! My mom 75 yrs old really wanted her food. Shame. I hate when business owners or workers are rude to customers it make me and my family never go there again. This place is a hidden gem. I was a little spectacle when We walked in and the place was empty. After making the order and the cashier going back to the kitchen and It look like my mom back there , I was a little relieved. I ordered Turkey wings, mac and cheese , and black eyed peas. Everything was good and it came with dressing and a piece of homewater cornbread. The turkey wing was extremely tender. The serving was of dressing was small but it was good as well. The best part was the mac and cheese. My fiancé got the fried porkchop with gravy, candied yams, and mac. Everything was well seasoned and he got a healthy sized pork chop. This place is traaassshhhh! Basura. My wife went in there with our 3 year old son. The owner's grandson "Brandon" works the front. This man is a maniac. Firstly, my wife waited an hour and some change for our food when quoted a 20 minute wait, the lack of "Brandon acting professionally by asking what customers "wanted" instead of 'Hi, may I help you?' This young man proceeds to get angry at the fact the place is getting busy and slams the cash register into my wife where she was waiting for our food, and flips a whole coin jar over at my son! Yelling and screaming. The owner then comes out, and that the customers need to excuse him bc he has "mental problems..." MA'AM! Why is he running your counter! Luckily my wife and son are ok, but what if they would've gotten hurt? An assault and battery charge from YOUR grandson that YOU clearly states had mental problems. The food? Dressing? More like corn meal, chicken broth, and cream of mushroom soup mixed together. The fried chicken was overly ass salty and gummy, not crispy at all. The yams still had a weird layer on it when biting into it, as if it's not cooked all the way. Collards were surprisingly pretty good. But that peach cobbler and mac and cheese was trifling. During her grandsons rampage she comes out and explains that they are understaffed that day and her other 2 cooks were in an accident at 2 am and everyone "just needs to be patient". Wow. Okay we were recommend this spot on Facebook. Would have never gone otherwise since we literally live an hour away. Well it was worth the Sunday after church drive. Let me call it--with all due respect, a hole in the wall. And this is the best hole in the wall spots you will find in Atlanta. Huge fan of soul food, but this place was a disappointment. Got a veggie plate, for starters the rice was cooked too long and I was essentially eating flavorless mush. The mac and cheese was eh. Tasted someone else's "yams" and that was horrible as well. But the price for a veggie plate wasn't bad. And they didn't have dressing!! They only have it on Sundays. Huge let down. Not to mention, a friend of mine ordered a fish plate a while back and they forgot to give us the fish. So we drive back up there, and they give her the same cold piece of fish that was left off her plate. Seriously??? Friend was just hungry so she took it without even debating it. I am a gay man whose money spends the same as everyone else's however unless i come in here with my sisters I'm treated very rudely by the grandson who is also the cashier. I love this place! Not sure why the poor reviews, but let me tell you this place is one you have to try for yourself. It's a family owned restaurant with the mom cooking and the son as the cashier. The food though. The food though! Cooked with love and very reminiscent of grandma's cooking. This food is pure deliciousness. If you don't believe me take a look at the pork chops I snapped a pic of. I have had the pork chops, Salisbury steak (my fave!), fried tilapia, black eyed peas, mac and cheese, cabbage, greens and candies yams. You can't go wrong here! The hot water cornbread is the perfect addition with its fresh crisp taste. Never greasy! My experience with soul food has always been instant food coma afterwards , but every time I come here the food gives me energy. I think it's because of the portion size and that the food is not greasy nor is it just sitting around waiting to bloat you up. Don't let the store front fool you! The food was just ok. The servic was super slow. They were running out of everything and I waited close to 45 minutes for my food which the longest I've ever waited for food. Its an ok soul food spot. Not great. My fried chicken lacked flavor and my husband's oxtails we're just ok. For all the 45 minutes I spent waiting on our food it wasn't worth it. I should have been offered a complimentary drink or something. But to top it off the woman who cooks the food decided to come out after about 20 minutes of waiting to tell everyone that she had literally just started frying chicken. So my mom had a taste for some soul food. We were headed to our go to " Annie Laura's". Well, why we en route, I was like it's V day, let's try something new. I looked online I saw Ms. Movale's Eatery. I read the reviews and I was like hey baby (that's what I call my mom because she's little lol) let's try this place. When we pulled up there was maybe one or two guest. I wasn't skeptical because usually the places that aren't noticeable from the street are the best. So, my mom ordered my the oxtails, mac n cheese, and collard greens. I ordered the Salisbury steak, rice and gravy, and Mac n cheese, with a sweet tea. The young lady who took our order was really nice. The prices were decent. The FOOD WAS AMAZING! The Salisbury steak was tender, and everything just taste homemade!! The tea??? Chile! Bussin'!!! Had been in bed for 3 days with a sinus infection and was FINALLY getting an appetite. Went on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised at the nice, clean and extremely friendly atmosphere. The young man at the cash register was super kind and mannerable. The patrons waiting on the food must have known it was worth the wait because they were super friendly as well. Ok, the food.....I got a pork chop sandwich, and then smothered pork chops with gravy, Mac and cheese, collards and a side of sweet potatoes (yams). The food was fresh, smelled delicious, looked amazing and tasted even better. No shortcuts on the Chops, they were a great center cut chop. Everything was cooked to perfection. I had previously eaten here on two or three different times. My order would normally be pork chop and few sides with my dinner. Although the prior visits were okay it was nothing special but good. On this past Sunday I decided to try their oxtails. They were the worst I've ever had and could not even eat the few that was with my dinner. My recommendation is to AVOID the oxtails here.
