I'm originally from Virginia. I miss "home cooking", so I make an extra effort to hit places that…read morecan "scratch that itch". This was my 3rd visit here this year. I wanted to give the restaurant a chance especially since the owner worked hard after my first experience to make it right. I rate on a 1(awful) to 5 (amazing) scale. Ambiance: One of the cleanest restaurants I've ever been in. You can eat off the floors! Spacious and interesting interior. Loved the exposed brick. But the music was too loud & bumpin for a Sunday evening meal (in my opinion). Had to talk over it. Rating: 4.5/5 Food: I'm sensitive to profit margins and such. When I go to small businesses, I try not to ask for "extras". All I wanted was the fried pork chops with no gravy (they come smothered). The waitress said that wasn't possible. I asked why-all I wanted was for them NOT to put gravy on the pork-chops (I was going to get it on the side). She was adamant that wasn't possible and couldn't give me a reason why. Only thing I can figure is the pork-chops were pre-made and already smothered. So I got the fried chicken, cabbage, and yams with white bread. Cabbage was shredded (different than what I'm used to, but not bad.) Hot sauce gave them some flavor. Yams were very sweet, but I enjoyed them. Both portions of sides were TINY. Especially considering the a la carte price of over $5 per side. The fried chicken was...ok. Which is surprising since I always enjoyed their wings. Now, I was asked whether I wanted cornbread ot white bread. I said white bread & when I said white bread, I was expecting a roll. But I literally got four pieces of wonder bread. No butter either. I was going to get the Red Kool-Aide but they only had Blue. I understand, not a big deal and I even joked with the server about it. I settled for water. Then I saw the price for Kool-Aide: $4.50 and NO REFILLS!!! Egregious. I could see a limit on refills. But NO refills for $4.50??? IKYFL. Rating: 3/5 Service: MUCH improved since my first visit. I had a reservation, and arrived on time. I was greeted by the friendly hostess and sat immediately. But it went south with the previously mentioned pork chop issue. The server could've said "Let me ask if we can do that." No good reason and no attempt to see if anything could be done. No salt and pepper on the table and when I asked for some, I was given tiny packets. My glass was kept full of water by different people, all of whom were polite. But my waitress only came to the table after delivering our food once. The hostess actually cleared our table and brought a little machine over to take payment. No printed receipt, just reading the items from the machine and given a total. Strange and a little off-putting. I want to look at a paper receipt. But that's just me. No offer of dessert, just the bill and a thanks for coming. Rating: 2. Overall rating out of a possible 15, they earned a 9.5. A very generous "3 Stars". Today was my birthday and I was really looking forward to it. I left disappointed. I eat at a lot of restaurants and take people to lunch at least 2x per week. I tend to take people to the same places when I can get a consistently good experience. This being my 3rd visit and I'm still not satisfied, I can't say I'll be back.

They also do bbq and I haven't had any in a while. I ordered the sampler with rib tips, burnt ends and fried shrimp. The grits were good and the catfish was light and crispy. The rib tips were coated in a sweet bbq sauce. Not my first choice but they were good. The burnt ends were tender. I also got to try the mini corn muffins - yummy, the mac and cheese - yummy, the yams - and the potato salad - bland. The owner told us it was his fault the potato salad wasn't good. He was a very friendly guy. Answered all our questions and spent time with us. It's always good to speak to the owner when you are from out of town. He's done a lot with the place. We would have gone another day to try other things but our schedule was tight. Everyone was happy with their choices. It's a nice place, live music on certain nights, lots of room.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEW DOGGY WAS THEIR FOOD GOOD!…read more I googled hush puppies and found this place. The hush puppies have a bit of a kick but they certainly satisfied my craving. My only complaint is the amount of salt added as they certainly didn't need it. Every thing that was fried came out nice and crispy. The shrimp were nice and large. My friend said the catfish had a hint of bacon. He certainly loved the fried green tomatoes. The baked beans were flavorful but personally, they don't need the ground beef. Sweet bay jeebus the Cole slaw. My goodness it was the best Cole slaw I've ever eaten and a refreshing bite with all of the rich foods. The owner was nice and attentive but the server could definitely use some training.

Great food! Great vibes! Great Service!…read more A soul food restaurant, if not one of the best; may be THE best in the Denver metro area, and the state for that matter. The food is a fine example of excellent soul food done with love through culinary knowledge and experience. We ordered the Oxtail plate with greens and yams, which included cornbread smathered in sweet, buttery love; Catfish with greens and mac and cheese. Nothing was overly salty or too much seasoning. I am pretty picky when it comes to soul food, and am now a regular customer.

Real Soul Food: Blazing Chicken Shack II…read more Listen, if you're looking for that authentic, seasoned-to-the-bone flavor in Denver, look no further. Blazing Chicken Shack II is officially in my rotation, and for good reason. I've gone through the menu, and I'm telling you right now, they are putting their soul into this kitchen. Check the breakdown on why this spot is a Denver staple: The Wing Dinner: Pure perfection. The wings are top-tier and easily some of the best you're going to find in the city. The crunch, the seasoning, the moisture, it's all there. The Catfish: Man, listen. This is top three in Denver, period. If you think otherwise, go argue with yo momma, don't argue with me! The Sides: Everything is cooked with straight-up love and grace. The okra? It tastes exactly like my grandma used to make it. That's that nostalgic flavor you just can't fake. The Wait: Look, let's keep it 100, be prepared to wait. They are cooking everything fresh to order. If you show up during peak hours, just know it's going to be a minute. Quality takes time, fam. The Vibe: My only real gripe is I wish they were open longer, but I get the mission. When you're serving heat like this, you go until it's gone. Pro-Tip for the Inner Circle: Don't just show up and wait in line. Order online first, then give them a quick call to modify it for dine-in. By the time you pull up, your food is ready, and you can go straight to a table and start grubbing while it's fresh and steaming. Final Verdict: This is a Mile High favorite. If you haven't been, you're late to the party!
