Fried Pork Chop Plate w/ Mac n Cheese

Great meal, we just decided to try something different and gave this place a chance, man I'm glad we did, the food was outstanding, the turkey was super flavorful, the cabbage was on point and lemee' tell you bout' them limas! The owner was so courteous and friendly, we were the only ones dining in at the time so she took great care of us. While I was eating my meal, I was also texting family members to tell them about this place. Definitely a return trip coming.

The place is always buzzing, and it's immediately obvious that many of the customers are regulars. There are no menus here. Instead, the waitress hands you a notepad and tells you to write down whatever you want. Not sure what to order? Wanda was happy to point us toward favorites like the blueberry pancakes and corned beef hash. The whole experience is refreshingly simple and surprisingly charming. Speaking of Wanda, she treated everyone like old friends stopping by for breakfast. Another employee wandered through the dining room chatting with customers and checking on folks like she had known them for years. Whether she actually knew everyone or just made it feel that way remains one of Howard's great mysteries. We ordered a mix of blueberry pancakes, eggs, bacon, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious, but the blueberry pancakes stole the show. The biscuits and gravy arrived on a plate that appeared to have surrendered completely to the gravy. If you leave hungry, that's probably a personal choice. One of the most entertaining parts of the experience is the honor system. Since you write down your own order, you'd better remember what you asked for when the food arrives and again when it's time to pay. No cheating. The open kitchen lets you watch the cooks at work, and the entire place feels like a gathering spot as much as a restaurant. The downside is that it gets crowded. You may have to wait for a table, and sharing a table with strangers isn't out of the question. If you're looking for white tablecloths, printed menus, and a polished dining experience, keep driving. If you're looking for good food, friendly people, local gossip, and a breakfast experience that feels like a community event, Howard's is exactly where you want to be. PS, bring cash because that's all they take. But there is an ATM in the building if you forget!

The hostess told us we could sit at the bar, but said we couldn't order food or drinks, only water. A short time later, we watched other guests being served drinks. When we asked the bartender about the policy, she seemed confused and gladly took our order. That lack of communication was frustrating from the start. What really stood out was being overlooked. We watched four parties get seated before us while we sat in plain sight at the bar waiting to be called. When we finally asked about our table, the hostess asked for our name and said, "Y'all didn't hear me calling your name." We were sitting only a few steps away from the hostess stand, so it would have been very difficult to miss. After we were seated, she did apologize, but by then the experience had already gotten off to a frustrating start. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot. There was an air conditioned dining area with available seating, yet we were seated in the hot section. We were literally sweating while trying to eat. A restaurant should be a place where you can enjoy your meal, not rush through it because you're overheating. I even forgot the slice of cake I purchased because I just wanted to get outside. The cleanliness also raised concerns. The tables were sticky, the condiment containers were sticky, and my drink had debris floating in it more than once. The bartender replaced it immediately, and I appreciated that, but after seeing debris again along with the condition of the dining area, it made me question the overall cleanliness. The food was okay, but it wasn't memorable enough to make up for everything else. I expected a much better experience based on the reviews. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but this experience fell far below what the reviews led me to expect. I hope management addresses the communication between staff, the cleanliness of the dining area, and the seating process because this restaurant has the potential to provide a much better experience than the one we had. I chose Hannibal's because I wanted to support a well-known local, Black-owned business with an outstanding reputation. That's exactly why this experience was so disappointing. I truly hope management addresses these issues because this restaurant clearly means a lot to the community, and I'd love the opportunity to have the experience so many others have described.

Southern Cooking Done RIGHT at Gail's Soul Food -- Goose Creek, SC…read more New guy in town looking for some real, signature Southern cooking. I needed a break from all that Texas BBQ and wanted some true soul food -- the kind that feels like it came straight from someone's grandmother's kitchen. I started with Gail's Soul Food, and let me tell you... I have zero regrets. Every bite was worth it. I showed up around 4:45 PM, just 15 minutes before closing. As soon as I walked in, the lady at the counter hit me with: "We ain't frying nothing 10 minutes before we close." No problem at all, ma'am -- that line alone told me I was in the right place. I simply asked, "Alright then... what can I order?" I went with the smothered pork chops with rice and gravy, collard greens, green beans, and cabbage. BAM! Everything -- and I mean everything -- was excellent. The pork chops were tender, well-seasoned, with a nice touch of garlic and smothered perfectly in gravy. The collards were real collards, not canned (unlike too many places in Texas), and seasoned just right. The cabbage was flavorful, and the green beans were on point too. I also order a turkey wing smothered in gravy and it was also very tasty. The restaurant itself was clean, well-decorated, and welcoming. Even though they were about to close, the staff remained friendly, patient, and committed to giving me great service. That says a lot about their pride and professionalism. I truly enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the customer service. I'll definitely be back to try a few more menu items before I head back to Texas. If you're anywhere near Goose Creek and want real Southern comfort food done right, Gail's Soul Food is a must-visit.
