Dinner was eaten in shifts as our dog is unpredictable in public and we didn't want her causing a scene to ruin the lovely ambiance! On a beautiful summer night my friends took me to Sorensen's for dinner. We just missed the live music but caught sunset and enjoyed a wonderful evening on the patio. The food was so good and we tried some of the recommended specials for appetizers and sipped on some of their speciality cocktails and my favorite tequila with soda water and an orange slice. I ordered the steak and my friend ordered the chicken. Both were prepared wonderfully and full of flavor. After dinner we had their berry cobbler which was very good. It was served hot with vanilla ice cream. It is worth the short drive from South Lake Tahoe to enjoy a wonderful meal here. read more

We started with a few appetizers, ordered every entree on the menu and finished with two desserts! Winter Salad-oven roasted beets, toasted walnuts, herbed chèvre over arugula all dressed with a lemon honey vinaigrette. Burrata Platter-creamy burrata, arugula, and prosciutto wrapped squash served with grilled bread. Charcuterie Board-a beautiful selection of cured meets, cheese, fruit, pickles and mustard. Cranberry Glazed King Salmon-tender salmon glazed with cranberry, asparagus and quinoa. Wild Mushroom & Truffle Ricotta Gnudi-this was a favorite. The gnudi were like gnocchi, but bigger. They were light and fluffy and soaked up the flavorful garlic mushroom sauce. Cast Iron NY Steak-perfect medium rare steak with a bourbon peppercorn sauce. Beef Burgundy Stew-hearty classic beef stew served with grilled bread . Shrimp Linguini-delicious pasta dish with jumbo shrimp in a light white wine sauce. Brownie Sunday-can't go wrong with this dessert! Warm gooey brownie served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with sprinkles, fudge and caramel. I had the salmon for dinner, and was really disappointed. For a single meal that cost over $54 (no beverage, includes tip), I expected it to be great. Was very much not. Generously sized portion, but a little overdone and dry. Very little glaze, and the quinoa/vegetable mix was pretty bad. We ate here 6 or 7 years ago, and it was great. Ate here recently twice for dinner and once for lunch. All 3 visits had beautiful, outdoor Autumn Foliage ambiance. You can't beat this awesome location in Hope Valley. Right now, the Aspens are perfect! Visit soon before the Autumn colors are gone. I ate here several times prior to Wylder resort taking over. The staff used to be so very warm, genuine and friendly. I docked the rating by 2 stars this time because each of my recent 3 visits lacked any type of warmth or genuine desire for any type of customer service. The only " warm and friendly " staff was the cook who actually ran out of the kitchen to serve me my dinner because they were severely short staffed that evening. I ordered the yummy Ricotta Wild Mushroom and Truffle entrée for Dinner both times. Both were very tasty, however, 1 entree had tons of gnocchi and the other entree had many more mushrooms than gnocchi. I wish it could be a mixture of both equally for balance. For lunch, I had the cauliflower soup but didn't take a photo of it because it wasn't very tasty. Again, staff customer service and personality was totally lacking. Oh, I so want this to be a cozy and tasty spot to stop at after road cycling, hiking, climbing, mountain biking or skiing. Unfortunately, it was the opposite during our visit. The limited menu included a few Winter items, but still had Summer things listed including a chicken sandwich that came with cold sides. We ordered a cocktail and a beer without removing our jackets because, during this chilly November day, the fireplace was not lit. Another group at a nearby table had sat by the fire, but remained fully coated. The cocktail was creative and tasty. The pretzel appetizer was warm. Our entrees were the chicken sandwich with which I requested a hot side and received roasted fingerling potatoes. My husband had the beef stew which he told me was lacking in beef. While we could tell that a full room and the warm fire along with the great service would have a lovely ambiance. We were looking forward to a tasty meal. The ambience was wonderful but the awful music was loud. Definitely not fitted for the fine dining atmosphere we were expecting. We were disappointed in the Burrata for $25 as it had three pieces of BURNT bread, hardly any balsamic reduction on the dish. Most importantly it was noted on the menu to have heirloom tomatoes, but in stead they were awful hard untasteful tomatoes, not sure where they got them. It would have been better to have small cherry tomatoes on the dish. Also had the server informed us of the issue, we wouldn't have ordered the Burrata. We ordered more bread for the dish and to our AMAZEMENT they brought us two small pieces and CHARGED us $4.00!!! I can get a whole loaf of sour dough homemade bread for $1.99 at my store in the Mtns. The Green salad was okay, nothing special for $13. The $32 Ricotta Gnocchi was not even lukewarm (COLD) and the serving size was very small. The berry cobbler was the best thing we ordered for a whopping $14. We didn't mention the issues above herein as we were hoping the rest of the meal would work out, but it just got worse. Charcuterie board: great because I'm on a diet but can eat the crap out of cheese and salted meats. Is it worth over $30? No. My salmon with greens and stone ground grits was DELICIOUS! Greens weren't over cooked. Salmon was HEAVILY seasoned which was a nice surprise. Grits were a bit over cooked as they had a slightly gummy taste but still tasty. Kid portion of stew was ok. If it sits for too long in kinda congeals. Got some beef, potatoes and carrots in it. Took a couple bites and passed it along. Steak in chimi was on. I enjoyed the char of the asparagus. But steak needed salt. Kid portion max and cheese was a favorite but I didn't try. Brownie was a hit. Berry cobbler not so much. Lamb lollipop was nice but again needs a little salt. Service was nice, a touch slow, dishes won't come out at the same time because it's a small kitchen. Would come back but not for a while. I live far away and I don't like hiking or snow, haha. Sorensons (at Wylder HV) hit right. When I look at the prior reviews, this was before Wylder started managing because anything less than 4.5 stars does not feel fair. This was the second time we ate in the mountains here, and from an ambiance perspective you feel the coziness: the snow piles out the window, the wood fired stove heating the building. The meal though and service was transcendent. We opened with a winter salad (the watermelon radish sliced thin, walnuts, roasted slices of plentiful beets, balanced out with chèvre hit so right). I had the NY Strip with peppercorns and the sauce was so tasty but not heavy, and steak PERFECTLY cooked through (chef made a ribeye on a castiron last fall that was also unforgettable, power went out in the kitchen - it's the mountains this is why you come here - and used fire to grill for us). My partner had the linguine shrimp - the shrimp were like lobsters. Desert you can't go wrong, this time we had the mixed berry cobbler with homemade biscuit and a generous scoop of ice cream. We feel lucky to have experienced such a unique meal in a space that has been preserved over the years. Good food but unpleasant thanksgiving dinner experience. Me and wife went to this restaurant for thanksgiving in Nov 2014, when we're just dating and had an amazing experience. So last year we wanted to celebrate the same thanksgiving dinner now with our six years old daughter with so much expectation and we booked thanksgiving dinner 2-3 months in advance after calling many times, I think we were the first to call. On the day we arrived, we were seated outside in the tent in shivering cold at 8 degrees or so and when we asked that we were supposed to have an indoor sitting reservation, they started giving some lame excuse of covid these and that, even though they had same no of tables and people sitting inside and some tables were ready but not occupied, then someone told us they keep those sitting for their regulars. It's a shame that in such a beautiful area, a sad place like this exists. My partner and I were looking forward to a hot meal after leaf-peeping in Hope Valley. We had originally planned to stay in one of the idyllic cabins here but they were booked up for the date we wanted. In retrospect, it was a blessing in disguise. If this office/restaurant is any indication of the kind of people who staff this resort, I recommend looking elsewhere. We were treated very coldly by the staff. The first question was whether we were staying here and as a previous reviewer had mentioned, very obvious who they prioritize. We were offered a seat outside which was fine by us but the kicker was the kitchen wouldn't be ready until half an hour later. There was no one seated outside. We were kept awkwardly waiting in the office area. The next interaction sealed the deal. We asked if there was a restroom we could use and the very rude waitress stated flippantly that she didn't know where and there were probably "portapotties" outside and she'd have to check with her manager. Lady, you work here. We were so put off. I go on Yelp to check the reviews and it's a two star cafe with other stories about the horrendous service here. We couldn't tell whether it was because we were not guests there or dare I say it- and I don't face this often- there was some underlying racism at play. My partner agreed it was all very off. Take your money and time elsewhere. Make the half hour drive to South Lake Tahoe and you'll be much happier. read more

From a Local: Pricey tourist trap; terrible service. Came in on a perfect Saturday late afternoon, looking forward to relaxing with cocktails & early dinner on the deck while enjoying the ambiance and mountain views. Restaurant not busy. We were seated, given dinner menus, and ordered cocktails: 2 Old Fashioneds @ $14 each and one Peroni beer @ $6. As we waited for our cocktails, same server reappeared and asked for our dinner orders, which we gave, as plenty of time had passed to look over our menus. A few minutes later, server appeared with two cans of beer & a glass, saying they were out of Peroni and offering a choice of the two beer alternatives. Chose one of the beers; asked where the Old Fashioneds were, and were told they were "on the way". Fifteen minutes passed, still no cocktails. To our amazement, server brought out our dinners, saying (again) the Old Fashioneds were on the way, seemingly having no concept of serving a cocktail before dinner. We cancelled the Old Fashioneds. We shared our one can of slightly warm beer and ate beef stew dinners (stew ladled on a plate w/two slices of toast on top @ $28 per). Stew and toast were average. Ordered one berry cobbler, also average, for dessert @ $14. Nice outdoor dining venue, spoiled by incompetent service and a poor value overall. Considered our visit a waste of time and money. My family is skiing in Kirkwood and I needed a place to hang out for 2 hours. I found Wylder (formerly Sorensen's) 23 min away. This is an unassuming country cafe that serves up surprisingly upscale delicious food. Don't get me wrong, upscale food and drinks but not pretentious; the dining room is rustic looking with a wood burning stove. You can easily feel like sitting in a French auberge. My Bloody Mary was full flavored and balanced. Then the Ahi Tuna melt is the best I've ever had, and I have had a lot of tuna melt over the years. Sorensen's Country Cafe, along with the small gift shop, is a small, rustic restaurant located at Sorensen's Resort, along California State Highway 88, in beautiful Hope Valley, high in the Sierra Nevada range of mountains. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and is a great place to stop for a meal, whether you're a traveler or a guest at the resort. As you walk into the office, you're greeted by the manager, where you can register for a cabin, and pay for your meal. The restaurant is to the right as you enter the office, along with a sign that reads "Please Wait to be Seated," but since I was the only diner at the time, the manager said I could sit anywhere I wanted to sit. That was easy for me to do, as I sat at the table next to the wood-burning stove. Sorensen's breakfast menu covers most of the bases and includes something for everybody. I did notice a couple of "oddities," including "Beef Burgundy Stew" offered on the breakfast menu - which I've never seen before - and the $3.00 price for an extra egg, or the same price for two extra eggs. Sorensen's Country Cafe serves breakfast, lunch along with dinner, and features a separate menu for every meal. Today, I ordered from the top of the breakfast menu the "Two Eggs Any Style." My breakfast included two fried eggs, over easy, which is my de facto standard, roasted red potatoes, and English muffin, along with a garnish of apple slices and orange. The meal was cooked perfectly, delicious, but at $9.00 plus tax, it wasn't inexpensive, but the price was fairy reasonable considering the remote, mountain location. The food is delicious, there is plenty of it, and the price is reasonable, considering the remote location, and the care that was put into preparing a quality meal. I loved my breakfast, but my server seemed to be a bit detached and not particularly welcoming or friendly. No worries, as the food is good, and the atmosphere is "mountain cozy." I came here with my family during the late fall season. New owners but the name of the cafe remains the same, Sorensen's. Updated menu with seasons (makes sense) but still found the classics including: Beef stew, and berry cobbler. I ended up ordering the Pork Chop to try something new. I was not disappointed. SO GOOD!! That sauce... Delicious! Sage, Jamie, Nahele and the rest of the team were a delight and made my family feel welcome. I cant wait to return and enjoy the deck bar once the weather warms up. We decided to try Sorensen's cafe for breakfast a few days ago because we heard it was under new ownership. The food was not only very mediocre but extremely overpriced and came out as cold as the 30 degree temperature that was inside the cafe. There's a sign posted which states "our food is homemade, so it might take a little bit longer to prepare", well that was an understatement. Cold, expensive, and slow! I will never go back, so if you're visiting the area, skip Sorensen's and eat at the always great Hope Valley cafe, it's a sure thing and the baked goods are the best on the planet! read more

My wife and I took our son and daughter-in-law to the cafe after we all took a beautiful hike on Saturday 10/29/2022. We were disappointed with the quality of food in general and the high prices. However, our main complaint was that we were charged $50 for a very low quality bottle of wine. We were never given a wine list with prices. My wife asked the server how much the wine would cost and the server did not know at the time of being served. We didn't find out that the bottle cost is $50 until the bill came. We ate at the Cafe over a weekend at the Wylder Resort. The steak and the lamb were undoubtedly the best entrees on the menu! People will balk at the prices and complain about the service, but as with most restaurants these days, they're short staffed and the wait staff and bartenders were doing their best. If you have patience and want to enjoy a good albeit expensive meal, it's worth trying. The three stars are BECAUSE OF THE BEES. One might say: well, you can't stop nature... well, actually you can... the bees are attracted to the restaurant outside dining area because there's a good source of water and there are people eating and no real prevention to stop them. We had several bees bother us one evening, trying to get at our food but the worst was that a swarm of bees attacked our table upon serving breakfast one morning... maybe 50 bees all at once aggressively attacking the table for the food. We were the first of four sets of diners it happened to. If you see the bees, it might be better to eat indoors are get carry out and look for a place with less bees. We have been to Sorensen's many times, have always enjoyed the waitress and bartender. However a year ago, we started to see a decline. We (group of 3) decided we wanted to give it one more try. The cocktails were flavorless and maybe a half shot of gin. We were frustrated and mentioned it to our waitress. She replied that she had never heard these complaints before, never said she was sorry about it but would tell the manager. He never came to the table, instead we were treated rather coldly the rest of the evening. I did feel for our waitress who was very busy while the manager and cocktail waitress did very little. The food (salmon) was tasty and well prepared. However, the prices should reflect outstanding service, food and drinks which were not the case. Never heard back. The answering machine STILL says open anytime. Are you brain dead??? Are you not normal ? Different planet? People travel a long ways to go to this place. Have a bit of common sense ( which you currently lack ) and have an answering message that states that things have changed. Also, a call back would have been nice. Some managers are smart, some are stupid... by nature. Also, I have read reviews that the entire operation since this property was purchased by Wylder Resort, is a clown show. Some one in this area is making easy money for a decline in service and product offered. Not rocket science. Stained carpets, etc. Shameful. Lack of pride much ? I took a friend to the cafe on a fall weekday spent admiring the quaking aspens turning gold. I told her what a lovely place it was and that I've been coming for a long time, but hadn't been there since Wylder Hotels too over. OMG! I was mortified. First, we were greeted by a surly woman who asked if we had reservations (we did). It wasn't a question, it was a statement. We then were seated at a table that had at least a dozen flies flying around, so we sat at a different table, which seemed to displeased the waitress. (The café was only barely half full of customers). The food was OK, despite the fact that my friend asked for a medium rare hamburger; it was well done, and her potato salad had potatoes that obviously hadn't been cooked all the way (they were still crunchy). When she asked about the hamburger the waitress asked her if she'd actually tasted the middle of it (she had). And the bathroom... there is one single toilet right next to the table we were sitting at, and it was filthy. I'm not talking dust bunnies, I'm talking dirt, grime, and stains. There was literally a line of 2 to 3 people at all times trying to use the single restroom (people were sitting and eating outside as well). I'm someone who normally writes a flowery thank you note in my best calligraphy when I have a nice experience, but this place was a total and utter disappointment. Regrettably, I will not come here again. (BTW, the wonderfully eclectic book selection that Sorensons had at the front desk that had me keep coming back is now largely gone, and replaced with Wylder Hotel clothing and mugs.) read more

I have been coming to this cafe for over 12 years. Not only for colors but for random rides over summit from Reno. Always loved the food, service and surroundings. Sadly we were there this last weekend and the Seater was surly and very unpleasant! He was rude when we asked to move to a sunny table instead of the one we were sat at. Buddy, your lively hood depends on us!! Get a clue!! Now the two young waitresses were very pleasant and helpful. We ended up inside due to the Yellowjackets (husband has horrible reaction if bit). Grace was our waitress and she was great and SMILEd! Food was terrible compared to years ago. This always happens when a corporation takes over a mom and pop place! Staff were not even trying. You can tell they had no training or customer relations at all. They got our order wrong few times and once we told them they argue. They got our food wrong. Very very slow service. Not once they ask for coffee refill. We had to ask every time. They pour cold water in a tea cup and once we told her is cold she said no water was boiling. I asked touch the cup its cold. She replied, I do not have to. It is not. Then she comes back with another kettle of hot water and says let me fill your cup. We said cups are already full you put cold water in there and she said AH OK let me go get new cups. Not even a simple sorry we take care of it. Comment to wrong order was "AH OK". OMG We decided to get up and go. For the first time ever in my life I left big fat ZERO tip to reflect the service we got and we were very disappointed. FYI I leave about 20 to 25% tips these day because of Covid. A sad experience in a nice place that I used to go to. That was not the way I wanted to finish our memorial weekend. It is a crying shame the original owners retired and it is now Wylder Hope Valley. I've been there many times over the last 5 years with old owners running it...food outstanding. Today I took a friend for what was suppose to be a delicious meal at lunch. They were out of the soup, out of the stew, so I ordered a salmon eggs benedict....the yolk on the eggs were firm and the egg not pouched, the hollandaise sauce which is suppose to be egg yolks, lemon juice, salt, cayenne, and unsalted butter (thick and creamy) lacked everything but the butter. The plate was actually drowning in butter turning the muffins into mushy paste. The salmon was well cooked and the potatoes were were well cooked but lacked any flavor, so good thing there was a ton of butter to help. Stay away...not worth the $22, which was the price on the bill when it arrived. Shocked to be asked to pay that amount and am so surprised they didn't have the decency to comp it as the server knew perfectly well what was wrong. read more
