Lemongrass chicken, flat noodles with beef and squash dish
    Mina G.

Came here for lunch. Been wanting to try this for a while. Small space with 2 floors, next to very busy parking area. Didn't know where to choose in menu but tried beef flat wide noodles, beef skewer, lemongrass chicken soup and some squash dish. Everything was tasty and original to me. I particularly enjoyed the beef skewer and noodle dish. Definitely would come back again. Food was 5/5, point off since service was so slow that day.

I mean...this place is the best. I cannot believe I've never been to this corner of Washington to enjoy the tastes and smells of Sophie's Kitchen. I will be back all the time for takeout, but for this first visit I was lucky to dine in. I got to try the frog legs, beef skewers, papaya salad, and chicken curry. Every single item was great but the beef skewers were my favorite bite of the night. Super umami flavor and tender beef. The curry is served with a fluffy rice and portions are all super reasonable to match the reasonable prices. This spot is a BYO and all of the servers we chatted with were incredibly kind and fun. I'll be back for the fried wings, noodle dishes, and soups in the winter months. Thank you to this Philly staple for existing!

Chicken skewer is delicious, but the more you eat, you may feel like it is a tiny bit too salty. Mee kon tang is normal: texture of noodle is good but beef is a little too chewy. My favorite is the sauteed pumpkin with chicken; the seasoning is good, but the rice is too dry. The soup is sour and quite spicy even when I asked for mild. The waitress later asked the kitchen to lower the spicy level even more and it tastes a lot better for me. It has a strong lemongrass taste. The pork rib is still pretty tough for me since I prefer fall of the bone. I think good food overall and price is affordable.

Ordered carry out but the dining area seemed quite peaceful and had relaxing decor so want to try dining in next time. Need to try a few other dishes on the menu. Tried the chicken skewers and the curry chicken. Chicken skewers were 3 for an order and quite tasty, a good glaze on them and grilled nicely. Curry chicken came with rice and was a nice hearty portion. Lots of veggies and big pieces of sautéed chicken. The curry sauce itself was sweet but didn't have much of a spicy kick. Good size for the price. Thanks

Sophie's Kitchen is a delightful family-run establishment with authentic, family-style Cambodian food, awesome service, and very reasonable prices! Our server Tony was so kind and hospitable, and was very happy to share the stories behind his family's restaurant (Sophie is his mom!) and some of the traditional dishes on the menu. We ordered the tossed papaya salad, sautéed chicken curry, and Spices & Sour Lemongrass soup (Somlawe Majou Kroeung). The soup was definitely our favorite and was so comforting on a cold snowy day! Tony explained to us that the soup is a staple in Cambodian homes and gave helpful tips on how to best enjoy it with rice, of which we were given generous free refills! My only regret is not getting more of the soup to take home because it supposedly tastes even better the next day (especially if you get it with pork ribs)!

This cambodian restaurant is a great hidden spot in south philly! It's super popular so be prepared for a wait if you're going during peak dinner hours. I went with a friend on a friday evening and we got a table after 45 minutes and it was another at least half hour before our food came out, because there was only one staff manning both the first and second floor. She was our waitress and the sweetest! Food wise, their appetizer deep fried chicken wings are a banger. It's perfectly fried with a crunchy bite, and sweet and savory, in a lemongrass and tamarind sauce. We were recommended their stir fried pin noodles, which was decent. You can choose your own protein, and I did like the texture of the noodles - it's rice based and similar to udon, but chewier - but I did think the noodles were a bit greasy. The curry had a nice kick to it and was okay - paired well with rice. Next time, I am curious to try their frog legs. The prices here are super reasonable, and the inside of the restaurant is cozy. This restaurant is on Washington ave so parking might be a bit difficult, but the staff here are welcoming.

This Cambodian place has a noodle dish I would describe as if Korean Toppoki and Taiwanese beef noodle soup had a love child in Cambodia - it would be this dish Lort Chha! Not as soupy, but with all the flavor reduced to into the noodles and beef. Beef skewers are also very tasty to start with. Kinda like gyukaku tendered and charred slices on a stick with a Cambodian sweet glaze. Again another must try in Philly. Service was super friendly and reservations preferred. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen approves. Place is kinda small and clean but parking is hard. So plan ahead.

Wish the seating area was a little bit bigger. Service was decent, food was pretty flavorful and tasty. Don't expect much from the ambiance here.

    Fried Frog Legs

It's been awhile since I had added Sophie's kitchen on my list and finally got to try it. This place is a hidden gem on Washington Ave. We ordered the frog legs to share. The batter was super crispy and light and for a dish this simple it was delicious and had such a nice flavor. The texture of the meat is similar to chicken drumsticks but lighter. I would highly recommend this dish. For our main, I got sautéed chicken with house curry (red) and my SO got sautéed seafood with green curry. They both had incredible flavor. I also loved that the portions were healthy. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back to Sophie's Kitchen.

Sophie's Kitchen is absolutely our favorite spot in South Philly! All the food we've tried is all so delicious and freshly made. I'm in love with their chicken wings, they are juicy and tender inside and still have that crunchiness outside. You can choose Tamarind, Sweet Chili, Lemon Pepper, or Lemongrasses for your seasoning to go with the wings, but my favorite is the Sweet Chili. So spicy, so good! The beef stick is also decent! So well seasoned and so juicy. If you love mussels and curry, please order that, that dish also comes with a bowl of rice for you. The chicken sour soup also hits the spot in such a cold weather day. Friendly staff, reasonable prices. We usually come right when they're open so no wait time but I think they could get busy on the weekend. Hard to find parking because you know, it's Philly. I will definitely come back here!

A small restaurant but very peaceful vibe with all the plants throughout. The server was attentive and fast. We got the Somlawe Majou Kroeung with pork ribs and papaya salad, both mild spice. Somlawe Majou Kroeung with pork ribs was PHENOMENAL. I've never had it before, but it was a perfect tangy, spicy, and savory soup. The veggies inside were all super soft and the meat was tender. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. This was a highlight for sure and I can see why the server recommended it. The papaya salad was crunchy and had abundant flavor. I found it to be too strong with the crab flavor, where it overwhelmed some of the lightness and acidity you'd find otherwise. Not my favorite papaya salad I've had and I don't think I would order this again.

I can't believe I forgot to publish the last review I wrote. There aren't enough praises for Sophie's. We were huge fans of its predecessor and even bigger fans of this place. I love how the new space is more spacious and has more tables. Moreover, the food continues to knock it out of the park. My absolute favorite is the prahok, I always order the dish when we come here. The beef skewers are always a crowd favorite as well. The service here is fantastic and consistently attentive. They make you feel like part of the family when you stop by. Highly highly recommend.

So you might stumble across info for the best times to secure a walk-up reservation and they'll tell you to arrive at least by 10:30am Thursday through Saturday as Mawn opens at 11am. But let me tell you how I pulled up in front of Mawn at 10:40am on a Thursday and there was already a line of about 15 people!! Mind you, these people have PEOPLEZ as quite a few were holding spots in line for others in their party who could now casually stroll up to the line since their spot was secured by their people. I'm telling you have a game plan! If I knew then what I know now I probably would have got there at least by 9:30, seriously. My party got waitlisted as soon as we were just one person away from entering the restaurant and we had to wait for another 40 minutes. Fortunately it was a nice day so we just walked around the neighborhood and came back and got in. It's a small quaint place that only seats about 28 people. You'll feel like your visiting your favorite relatives home. You'll glance around at the other guest and feel like WOW i'm one of the few who finally made it into one of the most coveted highly acclaimed restaurants in Philly! Now let me see if it lives up to the hype! haha! I started out with the pear melon salad. It was light and refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed the citrus notes and the pear slices. I would have never thought to add the pear but that really complimented the salad well. I was told that a MUST try is the head on soft shell shrimp. At first I wasn't thrilled about the thought of eating the head but said what the heck, lets go for the full experience! If you love softshell crabs you'll love this! There was nothing off putting about it. It simply taste like delicious premium shrimp in a fish caramel sauce with a hint of thai basil and chili. It was wonderful. I could have gone for a second round but I wanted to try other items. I enjoyed the seafood fried rice..this is similar to the crab fried rice but included uni roe and caviar with saracha on the side so you can regulate your heat level. I'll say this, while I enjoyed the seafood fried rice and the bonus elements of it, I was not a fan of the texture of the rice itself. Perhaps it's just my preference. The rice was light, fluffy and slightly sticky in texture whereas I prefer more of a thai fried rice which is dry, slightly firm and non-clumpy texture. But that's not taking any cool points away from Mawn. It's just my preference that i'm mentioning in case anyone else goes in expecting a different texture. I love the team service aspect at Mawn. Our waiter emphasized that we're not bugging anybody if we need anything we can stop any staff person walking by. I love that. Beef Noodle soup is delicous here. So is the yellow curry noodle soup. The fish is really good here too. I didn't realize I could have requested for it to be deboned (probably because I was talking to much lol) But my waiter was kind enough to come over and help me debone it when they saw I was struggling lol This was the first time I ever had a green thai tea! It was really a treat. Not overly sweet. Nothing but pure deliciousness here! And a super helpful warm friendly staff.

I love a good BYO, so I can splurge a bit more on the food and not worry about the cost of alcohol. For a party of three, we order 5 appetizers and shared the all star fried rice, which was a perfect amount of food. We got the beef skewers, which were definitely a favorite - the meat absolutely melts in your mouth! The papaya salad paired well with this, as it was tangy and refreshing, especially on such a hot day. The scallop crudo was a special for the night, but I think they should add this to their permanent menu because it was definitely a standout! The all star fried rice at $54 was also well worth it. I am often disappointed by dishes like these due to the lack of "stuff", but there was crab throughout and a generous portion of roe. I was a little disappointed however that there were only 2 scallops at that price. Overall, each dish had impeccable flavor, great presentation, and a good amount of seafood for the price.

The groceries in this area are cheaper than any place on Washington avenue and just as varied (if not moreso). The real reason to come down here is the street food. Anywhere in this area, but particularly along 7th between Ritner and Snyder, you'll be able to find street hawkers selling freshly open-air grilled beef and chicken at a single dollar per serving (two servings and some sticky rice for $2 for a total of $4 is enough for a meal). The best thing to try to get in this area if you're adventurous is the papaya salad from any of the hawkers (I prefer the fat lady at 7th just south of Winton, around 2130, I guess). In Thai, it's called somtam, but it is of Cambodian origin and called bok l'hong. Its hot, garlicy, salty goodness is fantastic at $5 no matter which hawker makes it for you (and it's prepared fresh to order by all of them, too). It's an enormous amount and really, it's enough for six people as an appetizer salad. Goes great with sticky rice. There're also hawkers along Moyamensing between 8th and 4th and around Mifflin Square at 6th and Ritner (NOT Mifflin, oddly enough) and they all carry the same sort of stuff. If you're worried about the area, there's a hawker on the south side of Jackson St near Mildred between 9th and 8th and that area's a tad less rough. I'd give five stars, but sometimes you'll venture here and find no hawkers. Their availability changes with the weather and on colder or rainy days, you'll find no one.
