Sonoma bread seems to be everywhere - farmers markets, cafes, restaurants - I'd never known a bread to be so widely advertised since moving to Sydney. So when I saw the café in Waterloo I was intrigued to find out if they did other stuff well. The important stuff first. Coffee. Dum Dum. Unfortunately my mocha was super bitter, possibly over done and burnt. Most of the time a the chocolate hides this this flavour sensation but not this time. The Danish however was perfectly cooked and scrumptious. Of course you can buy their loaves here too - everything from the Kamut to the Spelt Maple and Almond and Muesli loaf. The also do fruit salads, yoghurt muesli cups quiche, salads (free range chicken and avocado for $10 is good) and hearty filled rolls. The café is ok. Seats aren't too comfy but I like the high ceiling and large window with stool and bench space. Toilets - need a keep and it's down the street and up the corridor. Outdoor seating. No high chairs.

    Coffee and THAT sourdough...

Sonoma sourdough is the reason I'll never consider an Atkins diet. I defy anyone planning on giving up carbs to stroll into Sonoma and sample some breads. Or there's the muesli. Don't even get me started on the muesli. But carbs aside, my first visit to the Waterloo cafe actually came from a desperate need for a caffeine fix. In fact I was looking to score a kilo of coffee beans - the Single Origin blend that is my current obsession. So once my supply had been assured, my eyes went straight for the sourdough. Oh, hello. Yes, you may go to Sonoma for your coffee fix, but you'll wind up digging into the scrumptious sandwiches, or simply the sourdough with an array of toppings. Sometimes it's about the simple pleasures.

When did bread become the greatest thing since sliced bread? No longer is the choice white or brown - making a bread purchase is like an important life decision - you don't want to mess it up! What if you go for the linseed instead of the olive - it could all end terribly.... Having spent some time in Italy, the one thing I've learnt is to not distract the bread with all your flavours like butter or jam.... so if you want to appreciate Sonoma goodness may I suggest enjoying it plain or perhaps dipping it into some Olive oil...? The bread choice here is fantastic and their baked good absolutely excellent and yes a loaf can cost you $7 - but it really is an outstanding bread. Definitely worthy of a slice or two...

(This…read moreis an unnecessary third parenthesis, but I've never seen three enclosed parenthesis before, I thought I'd try it.))) The meeting was in the gallery because we knew someone who had access to it and in our formative years as a company we needed somewhere quiet to work, somewhere with coffee nearby and somewhere we could work undisturbed. This meeting would be perfect! 'Oh no!' Why did I say perfect? Sods law! The day of the meeting I woke up with a fever. A hot forehead dripping buckets of cold sweat. My nose like an upturned hose attached to a leaky tap; liquid continued to pour out and gravity only made it worse. I say nay to the idea of staying in bed and attend, but I do it on one condition, I have to get some delicious pastries for the team. I go to a place called Allan's Cake just up the road and see that they have a cabinet full of danish's and tarts. I make a selection and ask her if she could quarter them, (they have been accused of treason and this is the appropriate punishment, plus it makes them easier to share. (Convenient and taught a lesson)). I take these scrumptious sugary custard filled fruit and pastry snacks back to the team and they are so happy and delighted with their texture and taste that they don't even care that my appearing at the meeting has jeopardised everyone's health. They even let me go home early as I look, feel and am about to faint. A day of mixed emotion. Yes I was sick, but full of tasty pastry.

This French/Lebanese…read morebakery and cafe is famous among locals for its breads, cakes, Aussie pies, quiches, sausage rolls and other pastries. I tried their famous Bakerman Bacon and Egg Roll and sure enough, it lived up to the hype-a gorgeous dollop of mayo and crunchy bacon snuggled in a crusty bun. But. What's up with the $8.50 price tag? At the end of the day it's just bread, bacon and eggs. I washed this down with a coffee (the Molinari brand) and it was ok if a little bland. One time I stopped for lunch and chose the spinach and ricotta quiche with a side salad ($9.50). It was exactly what I was after (I love cheese!) but it was on the small side-the salad almost took over the plate but it certainly wasn't the star. There was not enough dressing; the leaves were a little dry. There IS something about this place that keeps me coming back though. It has a really tranquil atmosphere and is a great alternative for breakfast or lunch if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of nearby King St in Newtown. There are also gluten-free menu options and free Wi-Fi. The cosy village square is great for kids to run around after school while you sip your latte and people watch. Just don't let the kids see the $6.50 fruit smoothies. Great ambience and service but costly food you could get pretty much anywhere.

Located on 'Bourke Street'.... duh.... (actually there's also one on Gardeners Road as well, hence this review but they are basically the same! I go to both and I love'em both!!); it's an awesome Sat day brunch place with a few mates or actually nice enough to bring your better half for nice cup of coffee. Personally on a good Sunny Day, I wouldn't mind being there with a book while munching on a sausage roll. Yes Sausage rolls... You have to try them... they are not your Coles $5 for 30 rolls but gourmet lamb/beef/pork rolls which are superb. Their pies... oh mh.. their pies are sooo good! Always great variety, that you just gotta try them. Their dessert pastries are just divine as well! Ginger Brulee cannot be resisted! A must try - Carrot Cake! Believe me; you will love it! Great pastries; awesome coffee; love their smoothies/ice drinks; and excellent atmosphere. Imagine this.
