Great casual bbq joint that we stopped at on our drive from Mobile AL to Tallahassee FL. My son and I both loved the smoked wings 4/5! We also both got the baked sweet potatoes. They were so tiny they gave us 2. They came with honey cinnamon butter which was good. The green beans were seasoned well 4/5. Hubby didn't care for the cubed brisket. We are used to chopped being more finely cut. He said the baby back ribs were 3/5. Corn bread was good but a bit under cooked. Sweet tea was good just as I would expect . Walked in and was seated at a table, so we asked if we could have the booth 2 feet away. I guess I made her mad, because 20 mins later, the servers were attending to the other guests, just not us. No one came to ask what we wanted to drink and the lady that walked in after us and sat at the table we were offered originally, was asked for her drink order and then received it. I'm a regular guest at Sonny's BBQ, and I'm very familiar with the restaurant's atmosphere, menu, food service, etc.​​ One thing that I always have to request is hot, fresh fries, or else I might get fries that have been sitting for a while and gotten cold, or worse than that, dipped back into the fryer and refried so that they will be hot. What someone in the kitchen either doesn't realize or doesn't care to know is that refrying makes the fries taste horrible! When the fries are dipped back into the grease and fried for a 2nd time, they end up greasy and extra crunchy, practically burned...and they taste awful! Another thing that I have to watch for is the potato situation.. could be not so fresh tasting after it has sat under a heat lamp or whatever for a while. Tonight, I specifically asked my server if they had hot, fresh baked potatoes. Sometimes, if I arrive between 5:30-6:00p.m, I might get potatoes fresh out of the oven! The girl (my server) was quick to reply, " oh yes, we have hot, fresh potatoes" So, I ordered a hot, fresh baked potato. When my food arrived, the potato was semi-lukewarm at best and wouldn't even melt the spread that they call butter! Furthermore, it tasted like a leftover potato! Now, remember, i had just asked my server if they had hot, fresh potatoes, and she said that they did. If I had known that my potato would come out almost cold and tasting like leftover potato, then I would have ordered hot, fresh fries! The key words are HOT & FRESH!!! After receiving an almost cold potato I brought it to my server's attention that the potato definitely wasn't hot. She commented that she could get another one for me, but she couldn't guarantee that it would be any different. This server showed no real concern for my lack of satisfaction with a cold potato that tasted as if it had been sitting for a while, perhaps hours, idk. She could tell that i was dissatisfied, but she offered no replacement for the potato other than the slightest possibility of "ANOTHER potato that might not be any different". My pulled pork sandwich didnt taste that great either. I know how Sonnys BBQ should taste When done according to corporate standard and this restaurant failed! I like my food hot; that's the reason that I go to a sitdown restaurant where i can be served a hot meal. If i had wanted cold food, i would have eaten elsewhere and gotten a salad or some ice cream! Overall, the service and the taste of my meal were not good at all, and i was very disappointed that I had even gone there. I did leave the server a $2.00 tip, but truly I should have shown as little concern for her as she did for me and given her nothing!!! She lied abiut the potato and made no real effort to correct the problem....but instead made an excuse about how the potatoes sit under heat and they stay warm! My potato was not warm, and certainly not hot!!! I DID NOT ORDER A COLD POTATO! I SPECIFICALLY ASKED IF THEY HAD HOT, FRESH POTATOES! If the restaurant had not had hot potatoes available, I would have been fine with it and would have ordered hot, fresh fries! I felt like my server was just halfway doing her job and just trying to pacify me with answers just as she gave me the assurance that they had hot, fresh potatoes. She could have easily checked if she didnt know, and she could have given me the opportunity to choose something that would be hot! So, while I sat in a cold restaurant, eating cold food, my temper was the only thing that was hot, and I'm not so sure that I will go back to Sonny's any time soon! I went to high school down the road in Altha and have two cousins who put themselves through school working at this Sonny's. Our family has always had a good experience here and many family meals together over the years. I'm only writing this review due to the lack of caring amongst the staff and management that has made it to where we will never return to this location. They simply do not care about the guest experience. My Dad was friends with Sonny Tillman back when he was alive and started this business in Gainesville, FL on Waldo Rd. He would be so disappointed by the drop off in customer service. I tried my best to get a partial refund only for the food that was gross and to not give them a negative review during these tough times. I reached out to their Twitter team twice before they forwarded my message to the GM of the restaurant. I spent over two weeks asking for a refund with this person through text only to get the run around. This showed me the customer experience at this particular Sonny's isn't up to par. So disappointed, not just a bad meal but the end of a family tradition. I have spent over 25 years coming here and you have lost a loyal customer because you don't care about the people aspect of the restaurant business. read more

I've never had anything like this. I was surprised we don't have this in Texas esp with the garlic toast bread. That's what really made it for me. The bread was crispy, light, fluffy, buttery and garlicy. The meats were tender and the bbq sauce on there was sweet/tangy. Just how I liked. I ordered a full rack of ribs --takeout; I received a container with 8-bones; a full rack is 13-bones! I brought this to the attention of the person who took my order, and she assured me that 8-bones IS a full rack. I explained how she was wrong--and proved it to her, whereupon she corrected the problem. They are knowingly ripping you off when you order ribs! If you order ribs, count the bones--should be 13-bones in a full rack--6-7 bones in a half rack, depending on which end of the rack being delivered to the customer. Count the bones! read more

I don't know what we were served but I do not believe it could be called barbecue. The brisket had no smoke ring or smoke flavor, it was as though it had been baked not smoked. The chicken was over done and tough and the ribs were brittle and sticky. The best thing that they brought was the coleslaw with is just sad. Definitely not worth the $20 price tag. Sonny's BBQ is a chain BBQ restaurant that started in Gainesville, Florida in 1968. They are located all through North and Central Florida with some other key locations. I have ate Sonny's several times in my life, even before I discovered my all-consuming love for BBQ. Most of the locations have been updated recently. The Marianna location has been updated inside, even though, the outside still has the classic look. There is a bar area with a TV now and the dining room looks more like 2010 than 1980. Sonny's is a solid BBQ choice. As of September of 2018, Sonny's was running a special combo price - 3 meat plate for $12.99. I had to make the 30 mile trip to Marianna to take them up on that deal. The Marianna location is near I-10. On this day, the pulled pork was the best of the 3 meats I ordered. My pulled pork was tender but there was a spot that was overcooked. My ribs and brisket were satisfying. I have had better ribs and brisket from Sonny's. I would say if you are looking for consistency, go with the chicken and pulled pork. I did not know this until I asked my waitress but Sonny's does smoke all their meat on-site. They have pit-masters that work 24 hours a day to take care of the meat. My favorite sides are the slaw and beans. The beans are legendary! They do have a sweet taste to them but I always get beans at Sonny's. I do not always get beans from other BBQ places though. The slaw is homemade and more on the creamy side. You are also given a choice of cornbread and garlic toast. I like both but the cornbread is a sweet cornbread that I love to use to sample the sauces. The sauces at Sonny's is quite a phenomenal collection. They are all ketchup base except for one. More on that one in a minute. The sauces on the table are original, sweet, sizzlin, and smokin. The sweet is a remarkable sauce and one of my favorite sauces. Part of that reason is because you can find it at Sam's so I always have some at home. But it just goes well with everything with a sweet taste and smoky flavor. The original is a mild tomato flavor with a hint of sweetness. The sizzlin is like sweet with a hot sauce mixed in. The smokin is a smoky ketchup hot sauce. Smokin actually prepared me in life to tackle other hot BBQ sauces. The first few times, the heat is substantial. But as much as I have had Smokin, the heat is still there but I guess I do not find it as spicy as I once did. The other sauce is a mustard sauce. It is not on the table and you have to ask for it. Besides the sweet, it is my next favorite sauce and it definitely pairs well with pulled pork. Sweet tea is always refreshingly sweet and perfect! If I had to make a list of places for sweet tea, Sonny's would be on the list. I have never had a bad glass of sweet tea from any Sonny's I have dined at. I was reading the other Yelp reviews and for those who do not have Southern BBQ often, Sonny's is a very good choice. I am always up for a trip to Sonny's and like I said, it is a solid choice. But if you are a BBQ adventurer and looking for the best BBQ, you will be disappointed. read more

Service at the window was great. This guy was spot on making sure we had everything we needed with a smile. That alone makes me happy without tasting the food. We were traveling thus the reason for choosing the drive thru. The line is slow so be prepared for a wait. It didn't really bother us though because the guy at the window was so pleasant when we made it to the window. I was able to order wings based on a tip from another reviewer. You can get smoked wings through the drive thru but not fried. You can order meat only by the pound if you are low carb etc. brisket is melt in your mouth tender. Fantastic, Our waitress Lauren was nothing short of AMAZING. This was our first visit to Sonny's and I can promise you it will not be our last, we went after church on the 7th of June 2020. My husband wanted to have a special day together and we haven't had good BBQ in a while so off we went. The restaurant was extremely clean as were the restrooms which made me a very happy girl. It's really one of my FAVORITE hometown restaurants for BBQ. In my many travels it is hard to find the consistency and taste to match Sonny's in Marianna, FL. I have even been to other locations of the same chain, but this location never lets me down. I am also a member of their Birthday Club and each year they are faithful to sending my email invite to a jFREE meal which is generously stacked with food and drink.
