Sonny's is supposed to be the bbq expert- not me. But even I know that true bbq burnt ends should not be dry. While they have a dark, caramelized "bark" on the outside, the interior should be tender, juicy, and melt-in-your-mouth. When they are tough or dry, as ours were today they are likely overcooked or made from a cut that didn't have enough fat. Either way that ain't cool, Sonny's. Not cool at all. The corn nuggets were only "mehh"... pleasant but not memorable. The brisket was made more edible by being chopped but nothing succulent about. The baked sweet potato was large, well baked to a tend softness which you want and they remembered the cinnamon butter. The garlic toast appeared to just be the frozen Garlic Texas toast from the grocery store. Nothing notable about that whatsoever. The best thing and most palatable item we received were the ribs. They were actually very good but they could not make up for all the deficits. Disappointed. You ain't no Terry Black's. Not a bit of juiciness to be found in the entirety of our meal. And that is just not barbecue. It was more like yesterday's barbecue cooked another few hours too long and all dried out. And the key word here is DRY. Skip this one. Sonny's is our "go to" BBQ restaurant here in Pinellas County. Being from Texas, I am very fussy about the taste of smoked meats. The staff is always friendly. Our favorite waitress is Lara (she's been there for years). If we're not too hungry, we order the Big Deal with sliced pork sandwich on a bun with French Fries. If you're really hungry, order one of the combo platters with sliced pork and ribs. We ALWAYS get an order of Fried Okra to have with our meal. Not exaggerating at all, this was the best restaurant meal I've had this year. Baby back ribs and sides were delicious. The portion was so large I made two meals out of it. We did an order from here about two weeks ago as we were fished out. So after my run to Home Depot, I was like "ok, a bbq joint, i'll check it out". So I ordered a Brisket Sandwich (Sliced), BBQ Wings in the BBQ and Smoked Versions along with a Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Over the BBQ experience here was ok. Was it the best BBQ ever? No but it for what it was sufficing our taste for BBQ, it was fine. My favrorite actually were the BBQ wings as I wasn't expecting that. The most disappointing was the sliced Brisket as it was bit dry. The sauces provided came in packets versus BBQ sauce in cups. Felt sorry for server, he was excellent. Sonny's use to be a go to for BBQ. First they eliminated the salad bar. Then smaller menu due to COVID. Now the portion sizes are half what they used to be. I try to avoid giving 1-star ratings. Out of my 274 reviews, only 12 so far have 1-star, but wow.....my Sonny's visit really deserves the unlucky #13. I called to place a take-out order. I was told to go inside and pick it up at the bar. For convenience, I asked if I could use the drive-up window. I was told "no." However, when I arrived, there were 3 cars at the drive-up window. Strange... My order was just a pound of pulled pork and a quart of baked beans. The pork was fine and tasty as usual. I did not discover it until I got home, but the container of baked beans was very small and not a quart. I phoned the store and they said they do not sell beans by the quart, only small, medium, and large. This was also strange, as when I originally asked the lady taking my order if I could get a "family-sized" beans, it was HER suggestion that I order a quart. In my photo is the container of beans they gave me, next to an empty quart container. They charged me a whopping $10.49 for that container of beans, then argued with me about it instead of correcting their mistake. I pulled in for my mobile order. They have the parking spots where you type in location but they were so busy I just got out to grab my order. In the parking lot this gentleman yells "Good-luck, I waited 35 minutes for my carry out and it's probably wrong." Hopeful, I entered. I waited ten minutes before anyone acknowledged and when I say acknowledgment it went like this. " Hey I placed a to go? " The response "well if you hear your name called that's when you know your food is ready and walked away". There was a father and son complaining they had waited 20 minutes and feared cold food but shortly after my arrival they received the order. Finally 28minutes later my food arrives. He said hey we switched your meat we are out of a lot. Like who does that? First of all I already noticed my sweet tea was missing but I ignored and said if you are out of chicken and turkey can you just cancel my order? He comes back out no manager ever seen. They said take the meal the money will go back to your card in 3 days. I opened the order when I got home just to see if there was a side I could enjoy the whole meal and sides were wrong so basically replaced my whole order! I'll stick to palm harbor location because I left genuinely annoyed! The bar customer was talking about how he ordered the last chicken that's why I didn't get it. I found it amusing because he ordered while I was in store so that would mean long after my mobile order. Maybe dine in is priority!!!! Sonny's has been around forever and (for me, at least) sets the bar against where other bbq spots are measured. On this visit, tried the Pork 3 Ways platter, plus a BBQ salad. Sliced pork is thinly sliced, slow smoked till fork tender and mouthwatering. Perfect dipped in the signature smoky sweet bbq sauce. Ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender, meaty and lean. Also perfect for dipping in that sauce. (Can you tell I like the sauce??) Pulled pork is also excellent. Juicy and chunky, lightly seasoned. More sauce! Baked beans are slow simmered with brown sugar and chunks of pork. And a sweet muffin-sized corn bread. Dip the corn bread in the baked beans - yum! The BBQ salad is a big portion of lettuce, diced tomato, cucumber, onion, sprinkled with cheese, with scoop of pulled pork over the top. Veggies are crisp and fresh - a nice salad. Catering was a 10+ Dealt with both Mike and Michelle in March to discuss and schedule Catering for a Welcome Dinner for 50-55 persons from London, Scotland, Greece, NY, NJ, CA, GA and FL. Both were very helpful, dependable and with great customer service skills in assisting us in our preparations. The expanded menu consisted of pulled pork, BBQ chicken, St Lewis Ribs, baked beans, Mac n cheese, Cole slaw, tossed salad, cornbread, peach cobbler. All of the foods were perfect and enjoyed by everyone! Caterers arrived as scheduled; did an great job setting up, serving hot and well prepared foods and breaking down according to our agreement. I live in Indiana, it has been about 4 years since we have seen a Sonny's. I lived in Texas for 6 years and fell for good BBQ. The first Sonny's I've seen in years was in Saint Petersburg. I love Sonny's and have been a fan since I first tried it as a teenager with my grandparents that lived in Orlando. To say I was disappointed is an understatement what's happened! Please don't use the pandemic as an excuse. I got sliced pork when did you change it to just slicing what you use for chopped pork? The brisket was tough and poorly cooked. Sonny's is either becoming more corporate, losing money or just lower quality in general. Our last visits we are noticing more of the food seems lower quality. The pulled pork was full of fat and big hard chunks that were not considered burnt ends they were just burnt and inedible. They changed the recipe for the garlic bread. It's no longer garlic bread they're using that cheap fake butter that you get at a Cisco quality breakfast restaurant and it tastes like oil not garlic butter. the prices aren't that great anymore. The food is not nearly as good as it used to be. Lots of negative changes, including even the green beans recipe which taste like seawater It' so salty. It's sad. We've been coming here for years. The people behind us actually complained about the garlic bread and the server acknowledged that lots of people are unhappy with the new bread. Gotta cut costs I guess. Another corporate chain gone more corporate. Too bad Sonny's not running things anymore. read more

I've only had Sonny's when catered at an event until this visit. I wasn't familiar with the menu or options. I opted for the Sonny's sampler. The picture you see is literally a half portion of each of the meats I ordered pulled pork, chopped brisket, 1/4 white meat chicken and two ribs. Also, half a corn muffin. This is full size of green beans and sweet potato that I chose as my sides. I thought I would eat from this dinner two times but there was actually enough for one dinner and two lunches! I wouldn't order the seasoned ribs again. They were pretty flavorless. The pulled pork was better as served, before any of the sauces I tried with it. The 1/4 white meat chicken was surprisingly moist and flavorful! The chopped brisket was the star of the meats I had selected! The corn muffin was a bit mushy for my liking. The green beans weren't anything special. The sweet potato was quite good. My son was the reason for choosing Sonny's for dinner. He has had the Cuban they serve before and loves it. This time he added "more meat" and chose brisket as the extra meat. He also loves their Mac and cheese. He ate half his dinner and the rest for lunch. This guy has a very hearty appetite so that's saying a lot. Over all, for less than $40.00, ready and made as ordered, in a reasonable time plus the number of times we both ate from our meals no complaints here. Signed up to receive texts and got free Redneck Egg Rolls which came with 6 pieces and really good dipping sauce. Atmosphere: I have never seen a Sonny's before but I think it's a chain. In any case, it had a chain feel to it which is not bad at all. The dining area is comfortable. They have tv's around so it causes issues with distraction when are trying to have conversation. It is fun to come when football is on because they may have your team on. Plenty of room in the booths and everything has a wooden look to go with the smokey feel. Food: The chopped brisket was okay. I picked it because the sliced brisket is lean where the chopped was marbled. My wife ordered ribs and said they were good but not the best. She did say that the wet wipes fell apart in her hands during use so they need to upgrade to better quality wet wipes. The corn bread was good but would be better is they used real butter instead of Country Crock fake butter spread. Service: Excellent. Our server was Ceryna was very nice and did a great job.
