My problem with the place is with the music school. I signed up for five private lessons. On the 4th, I had to call in sick 5 hours prior. End of the month I found out that it was a missed appointment and I would not receive any more until I paid up for another month. I didn't like this. If you're sick then you'd still better go or you'll lose $60. After some back and forth, they did finally offer the lesson but by then I was not interested and did forfeit the lesson. Don't pay 1 month in advance. Besides that, you may not like the instructor.

Then I am told I have 30 days to return it, no extra store credit offered, or maybe they could extend that return window a smidge because I'm 200 Km away... I have dropped over 3 grand at L and M over the years (30 years) and that's the last cent of mine they will see. 10/10 for sleaze.

Any guitar player knows getting new frets is akin to heart surgery and rather than risk a botch job I used to drive my guitar down to a tech in Calgary who I trusted. Doc has replaced that tech for me. The other day I had him install a new tusque nut and replace the SI pot on my Strat. I needed it for the weekend and he did all the work that day - wonderful! He was the perfect amount of helpful without pressuring me. They also have electric guitars, keyboards, and all sorts of recording equipment. I have had such mediocre experiences with the chain music stores lately, I'm glad this local business is still around. I did some quick googling, and the prices are very competitive with the bigger stores too. All in all, a very positive and informative visit. I think I've found the guitar I want! (At least I didn't see any.) Guitars of all (most?) makes and models hang from the walls enticing, inviting, and teasing you to fondle, caress, and pluck them and take them home. It's like spending time in your cool uncle's attic. There's a separate room for acoustic guitars and another one which stores amplifiers. I was there for a clinic (musicians don't like to say "lesson" so they call it a clinic) where a professional musician stops by to give tips, tricks, and advice. Admission was $10 but tickets were good for $10 off a purchase of $25 or more that night. After the clinic I moved upward to Narnia to scope out a guitar I had my eye on. Axe's website had it listed on sale for $419 (marked down from $479). Imagine my surprise when I saw that the store had it on clearance for $324! Moral of the story?: Clearance prices apparently aren't posted online; you'll have to kick it old-school and actually haul ass into the store to see if there's a deal to be had. (Or maybe just call them.) I asked the sales guy, Coltan, if I would still get the $10 off since the guitar was on clearance. He seemed a little confused. I explained the promotion. He said no one told him about a discount for participants of the clinic. Ya gotta love it when management doesn't pass info on to their employees. This is where the talking animals could have been useful; they could relay information between management and staff. He told me that clearance items generally aren't subject to discounts anyway but he threw in a free patch cable. These generally cost around $10 anyway, so it's all good. He boxed the guitar up for me and I was on my way. Downstairs has rooms devoted to drums and keyboards as well neither of which I play so I didn't go into those. Axe Music doesn't just sell musical instruments. They have a crazy selection of DJ gear too. There is a whole room downstairs filled with mixers, turntables, road cases, etc. They also offer regular music lessons for guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums for $13 per half hour.

One of the store's owners waited on me, and was a totally cool and cheerful guy. The price of the harmonica was in line with the first place I went to, and he even made conversation with me about why I needed it (it was for a specific song). Lillo's sells and repairs musical instruments, especially guitars, and also sells a wide variety of sheet music. Lillo's is also a place for musical instruction. I have a friend taking vocal lessons here and she is enjoying the experience. Lillo's has also been around for decades in a location where there are at least two or three other music stores nearby. I have a couple of guitars that may need servicing in the near future. Guess where I am going to take them?

Two decades later my xboyfriend and our son, Robin Nash, without knowing our history was hired by Vic Lillo. My son was also an aspiring musician and often had priority gigs and was unavailable to work for the store. Vic and Doreen always gave him consideration and always offered him a workplace ... I often think they did it more for him than themselves. He met his future wife Shawna there teaching harmonica lessons, drums and sold and repaired all the various instruments. My son Robin Nash was always welcome to come back when he needed extra income, always welcome to return as an employee or rather an extended Lillo's family member. If you google Robin Nash you'll see him as Santa playing at a LIllos event... his students and their parents in attendance. Because of families like the Lillos children grow up more talented, cared about and the old fashioned values of being a good guy "for sure for sure" will rub off. It definitely did on my late son. I will always be greatful to the Lillo family for cherishing him and giving a young hopeful musician a break.
