Some food tastes good. Some food tastes like home…read more Let me start here: I do NOT eat just anybody's Haitian food. I've tried Haitian spots all over Texas trying to find something that comes close to what I grew up eating. There was one place years ago that I really liked, but they eventually shut down. So when Griot Gardens opened and I realized how close their food came to home, I was HAPPY. Great ambiance, great flavors, great company & great eats! Their food is probably the closest I've found to my mom's cooking, and that means a lot to me. There was a time when I came here often, especially when I was missing my mom. I'd grab some food and, for a little while, it felt like my mom had just fed me. That alone should tell you how close to home the food hits for me. And the food actually backs it up. This is authentic Haitian food with the flavors I expect when somebody tells me I'm about to eat Haitian food. Again, I don't play about that. Right now, my favorite is the seafood legume with white rice and plantain. Definitely recommend. I also recommend the griot bowl, and if you see kabrit, get into that too. You really have options depending on what you're in the mood for. Don't skip over everything else either. They have Haitian juices, sweets and other treats, so I usually end up looking around to see what else I can leave with. Another thing I really love is that they host events that bring the Haitian community together. If you're from out of town and looking to connect with other Haitians, this is a great place to start. And even if you've been here forever, sometimes you just want to be around your people, hear the music, eat the food and get a little taste of home again. I really appreciate that Griot Gardens creates space for that. For me, this place is more than somewhere to grab food. Sometimes I want Haitian food because I'm hungry, and sometimes I want Haitian food because I miss my mom and I want something familiar. Griot Gardens has been able to give me a little piece of that. And one more time for the people in the back: I do NOT eat everybody's Haitian food. So if I'm recommending it, I mean it.

I noticed that it was very quiet inside and the opening time of 11:00 am is misleading since the kiosk wouldn't let me order until 11:30 am. Despite that, I enjoyed the food since Haitian food is hard to come by. On the other hand, this restaurant's long wait times to get food after ordering may put people who is time-strapped off.

It's not your typical restaurant, brick and mortar location. There is many other restaurants in the building. Basically you order either in person or online and they can either store your food in the locker for pick up or hand it directly to you. The memorial food hall reminds me of a cafeteria style, except you can't see them prepare your food. There's no seating to eat inside, but you can sit outside. I usually always get my food to go. My go to griot plate.

I shared the fufu with egusi soup with stewed goat added, the Stewed Hen, Moin Moin, & Jollof Rice, and the meat pie with a friend and it was plenty for both of us. The fufu with egusi soup was super delicious with a spicy kick that I loved (7/10) . The plate was the star of the meal. Everything from the stewed hen, to the rice, to the greens were all so well seasoned and I truly enjoyed every bite (8.5/10). The meat pie was also delicious with a savory filling and the pastry was thick and buttery but surprisingly not overbearing considering the pastry to filling ratio (8/10). Overall the food was awesome and seemed quite authentic. Would definitely come back to support this small local business!

When I woke up this morning and checked DoorDash it said that the order was picked up at 7:37pm and my card was charged $60, which is honestly too much for 2 soups and 2 appetizers. Also on top of that the location was sketchy, had no visible signage, and was dirty. Would not recommend this place at all if I could give negative stars I would.

Such a delicious meal in every single bite with each bite being full of moisture and consistency too. The drumsticks had a slightly crispy exterior, really tender flesh, very juicy to almost falling off the bone feel to them. They were cooked thoroughly without being dried or burnt. That spicy, oily red sauce was so aromatic with just enough kick to it. It wasn't creamy, but not too watery either. The Jollof rice was smoky, savory, buttery and a little spicy. The greens had a subtle ingredient in them and complimented the rest with some earthiness, while the plantains were like a mini dessert. The plantains were very good with a really soft, creamy texture, good warmth and natural sweetness. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient. This poultry dish is a real treat every time with every flavor profile in play satisfying multiple pallets.

The beef pie was the only item in my entire order that actually tasted good. My waitress informed me they were already out of several menu items which was surprising, given that I was there right at opening. Doesn't the kitchen prepare before service starts? I understand African cuisine isn't for everyone, but that's not why I'm leaving this review. My issue is with the service and the absurd wait time for my food. The beef plate, in particular, was disappointing the two pieces of beef were dry and could have been prepared far better.

The chicken is delicious, and no sauce is required. I'm not awarding five stars because of the delayed service, and because I only had two orders, I can't say whether everything on the menu was truly nice. But, oh well. I'd return in a heartbeat! Now let's talk about the food. * The portions? HUGE-you can easily share with two people, but honestly, you probably won't want to. Everything I tried was finger-licking good, but that chicken soup deserves its own round of applause. It's hearty, flavorful, and honestly off the chain-comfort in a bowl.
