I had a very bad neck injury , very little movement in my neck and quite a bit of pain. I went to see Dr Melamed and we discussed the possibility of surgery but he suggested I should take a conservative approach first and get physical therapy. I appreciated him not pushing me into surgery as a first option and so I went ahead and got physical therapy as well as acupuncture. I did this for over 6 months. Unfortunately my neck really never got better so I went back to see Doctor Melamed.In July of 2024 I had cervical disc replacement performed by Dr Melamed. I had four discs replaced so it was a pretty major surgery.The surgery went extremely well as did my recovery. I had very limited pain if any at all after the surgery and I wound up getting almost full relief from any neck pain and virtually 100% motion returned. I was forced into medical retirement due to the unrelenting pain in my spine and neck and moved to LA to be close to family. I consulted with several "Top Surgeons" in spinal medicine and had an infinite number of imaging sessions, nerve blocks, and surgical suggestions but none of the surgeons seemed to have an actual treatment plan. That is, until I found Dr. Todd Lanman through a recommendation from my Pilates instructor! He had repaired and replaced the discs and vertebrae of many of her Pilates clients, with each of them healing and becoming "pain-free," and able to resume an active, athletic lifestyle. My condition was a challenge in many ways: I was born with "loose" ligaments that did not hold my spine tightly in alignment; and my spine had degenerated due to lack of proper medical treatment in previous years, which had also made the pain much worse. I've had 2 prior spine surgeries which were laminectomy and laminectomy revision. I was told my only option after that would be a fusion. So I switched health insurance and did extensive research and Dr. Melikian was on the list of top neurosurgeons. I made an appointment to see Dr. Melikian who ordered multiple MRIs. After careful review Dr. Melikian recommended a microdiscectomy which ended up being the best decision for my back. The pain I was feeling daily is gone and the recovery has been much easier than previous surgeries.
