Wasn't super impressed with it but it tasted good. I was craving matcha but I also wanted to order something unique so I got the matcha-horchata swirl. I liked it but horchata definitely overpowered the matcha. The place is clean, very small, with no seating. I believe the cost was $4.80 which is fair.
My kid loved it! It was pretty cool presentation too & the ice cream is AMAZING! I'm lactose intolerant, so I just had a bite but in my kid days, I would've eaten a ton of this! I do wish they had a lactose free option - but you can still get the fish and have it stuffed with Nutella LOL. They had several flavors & a few rotational. The Tayaki fish taste like pancake kind of. We chose ours on top of the soft serve ice cream, but they will also make it where the fish acts like a cone. And you get to watch the entire process which was pretty cool. Decent price! Again, if I could eat this.... I would def go back often!
I'm a big fan of SomiSomi in Carrollton, so I was super excited to try the Katy location. My friend and I split an Ah-Boong (soft serve in a cup with a fish-shaped taiyaki on top). We got the matcha and cookies & cream swirl, which is one of my favorite combos. It was pretty busy when we went (Saturday afternoon), and there was a mix-up with our order - they accidentally gave us only cookies & cream and put fruity pebbles on top even though we didn't ask for them. We let the staff know and they were quick to fix it. Once we got the correct swirl with Oreos and matcha powder topping, it was perfect. The ice cream was smooth and flavorful, and the contrast of the warm, crispy taiyaki with the cold soft serve is just unbeatable. Despite the initial mistake, everything turned out great and I'd definitely come back! One thing to note: this location doesn't really have any seating. There are a few narrow standing counters that maybe fit ten people total, so it can get crowded inside pretty fast. It was too hot outside for us to sit and risk our ice cream melting, so just a heads up if you're planning to stay and eat there.
The soft serve here is always perfect! It's a simple a concept with just the right amount of choices for how you want your soft serve, the sauces and toppings. The people are always accommodating and helpful. If you would like to eat inside, they have tables for you to enjoy your soft serve standing, or you can sit on one of the many benches outside along the plaza. Our go-to is always Ube, and this flavor never disappoints. My husband had the Cold Brew Float and he was happy -- it's fueling him as we drive home to San Antonio right now. Somisomi is a must-visit when we're in Houston!
WOW! Can I give 6/5 stars!? This was my first time visiting Somisomi and I will be craving this from IL! This shop offers soft serve as well as "taiyaki" which has a waffle like outside, mochi like inside, and can be filled with flavors. Mouth watering yet? I ordered the Upside Down Ahboong with the matcha and ube soft serve swirled, with a smaller taiyaki filled with custard put on it. They also have optional sprinkle topping (i chose graham cracker) and a garnish (i chose macaroon cookie). The final product had the cutest look and I can vouch that it tasted even better! I also tried the horchata and Milk & Thai Tea soft serve but liked mine the most. They will rotate what flavors are swirled to keep things interesting. Either way, visit as you won't be disappointed!
We visited on a busy Saturday night, but despite the crowd, the line moved surprisingly fast. I ordered the upside-down soft serve with matcha and milk soft serve with a Nutella filling. Unfortunately, they got the filling wrong and gave me matcha custard instead--but honestly, I didn't even mind because it was still delicious! The texture was incredibly soft and velvety, and the service was quick. Even with the mix-up, I left happy and would definitely come back to try more flavors!
I could eat soft serve all day long. We stopped by for a treat and boy was it a treat! We chose the upside down ahboong which is a cup filled with soft serve and a taiyaki fish on top. I went with cookies and cream soft serve and taiyaki with black sesame filling. I almost chose the custard filling but was concerned it might be too sweet. The gentleman behind the counter suggested black sesame instead and it was a great recommendation. The soft serve was smooth and not too sweet. The taiyaki was super crispy and the inside black sesame paired very well. Yum!
Stopped by after lunch for a quick snack and was pleasantly surprised. Despite the crowd ( considering it is Father's Day) the service was impressively fast. We received our order in under five minutes. We tried the matcha and milk swirl upside down ahboong style. The taiyaki on top was crispy and fresh. The icecream had a perfect balance of matcha and milk without being overly too sweet. We also had custard and red bean taiyaki. Both were made fresh and had the perfect crisp and chewy texture. They also had a good amount of filling. So satisfying. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
My friends wanted something sweet after lunch, so we came here to check them out. We tried some of their ice cream flavors before we settled on the matcha and ube ice creams with their respective taiyakis. The matcha ice cream was creamy and not too overpowering with the green tea flavor. The Nutella taiyaki was delicious. The pastry was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the Nutella complemented the ice cream nicely. My friends enjoyed their ice cream as well. At $6 per cup, though, it's expensive. To be fair, this cup is big enough to feed 2 people. I found that out after the fact because I was so full. Also, depending on your taste preference, not all the ice cream flavors will appeal to you. If you like pandan, you may like their ube flavor. The black sesame ice cream flavor wasn't that pronounced to me either. So, you'll just have to taste test each ice cream flavor to see which one you'll like. read more
Though small, SomiSomi is an ice cream force to reckon with. The interior is Instagram worthy with pastel and minimalist designs that follow the fish theme. Unfortunately, free samples are not being offered at this time, so I decided to experiment with ube and horchata ice cream. I ordered the ice cream without the taiyaki and it was extremely creamy and melts fast! The ube tasted like vanilla and the horchata had the slight hint of cinnamon and hazelnut, making my cup the perfect blend of summer coolness. SomiSomi's serving sizes are perfect and hit the spot. The employees are friendly and accurately take your order in a timely manner. I can see why this establishment has 4.5 stars; it is very deserving of its stellar reputation. read more
I've had a few friends/family members recommend this place, so obviously I had to try it! First impressions: Really cute place! It's not too tiny, but there are limited seatings! They had the flavors and everything listed on the screen above the counter. Service: These people really are friendly and helpful! When asking us what we wanted, it came off so polite and friendly, which makes the experience of coming to a new place even better! Food: okay, so at first I thought it was a bit pricy, BUT I was definitely wrong! The ice cream, the toppings, the taiyaki (with a taro lining) AND a macaron?! That was definitely a steal, and we ended up sharing one! Because they are not stingy on how much ice cream is in that cup! My favorite flavors are ube and fruity pebbles soooo this definitely hit the spot. Overall, this place was pretty great! Definitely try this out if your near one, you won't be disappointed! read more

Tasty soft serve at a reasonable price! My kids love it. You can have samples if the flavors are a bit exotic for you. Unlimited toppings (except for the macaron or strawberry). The "cones" are ready made but not like they've been sitting for hours. The filled taiyaki are made to order. I wish the taiyaki would do well the next day. I would love to take leftovers so I wouldn't have to drive so far. read more
This rating is based on my overall experience and not just the dessert itself.. I came in on a Sunday night and ordered a cup of their UBE/oreo swirl.. and 2 of the same swirls in taiyaki cones. Somehow the young lady didnt ring in the cup I ordered and by the time I noticed and wanted to fix the order, the line was out of the door. Annoying.. So we left disappointed. By the way.. this place is expensive! Spent $14 with 15% tip included.. only for 2 taiyaki ice cream filled cones!!! Too overcrowded and such a small place. Only one cashier who seemed to be fairly new. Worst experience at a Korean ice cream shop. read more

Friendly, fast service and made to order. The waffle batter is nice and light with sweetness and not overly sweet which helps compliment with ice cream or cream fillings. Having tried only the Taiyaki so far, you would have to definitely eat them fresh or else they'll become soggy if you wait to eat them later. But, nothing a little air fryer can't fix. I'll have to come back and get some ice cream next time i'm around. read more

My daughter wanted some ice cream after lunch today so found this place on yelp and came to try. Really disappointed that the store couldn't provide sample of the ice cream as I wouldn't have order one let alone two servings. I ordered the cookie and cream for my daughter and ube for myself. Presentation was great but both ice cream were beyond sweet. Way sweeter than any self serve yogurt or ice cream place for comparison. Unfortunately both my daughter and I ended up eating less than 20% of the ice cream and throwing them away. I thought maybe was just me but my 6 year old would never throw away ice cream so clearly this place was a miss for us. read more
Amazing taiyaki experience! The staff is really friendly and will walk you through the process if it's your first time here. They have a small selection of flavors but they all pack major taste. If you don't know what to get you can sample the flavors. I got a milk tea matcha swirl with a custard filling in the cute fish Both flavors complemented each other well. The matcha had a beautiful distinct yet smooth flavor matcha is know for while the milk tea was smooth and sweet enough to balance the matcha without being overly sweet. There is a rotating flavor every week so it's nice to see what's new. read more
The cold creamy soft serve paired with the warm crunchy pastry is everything! Tip: get the ah boong upside down - it's easier to eat. They have many soft serve flavors and different fillings. We tried a few different soft serve flavors with custard filling - all delicious. read more

The ice cream here was creamy, smootxh and rich! The price and amount of ice cream is not a bad match. It may not look like a lot of amount when you get it upside down but it was a lot of ice cream given. The taiyaki I had was just filled with regular custard but it makes eating the ice cream so much better. There is something about a bite of pastry and nice cold ice cream. They do have weekly mixed flavors so may want to experiment and try one those out. The topping came with what I had so that was a plus. The worker was very nice and accommodating by letting us sample flavors which help me decide what to get. Just wish there was one closer to me. read more

The ice cream is so tasty and good customer service, however this place doesn't have seating, there's a bunch of benches around the building but no shade. You have to sit in the heat and direct sun in order to enjoy the ice cream. We decided to sit in our car, it was a mess. Never coming here again just because my kids didn't enjoy the experience, they had a little bit of ice cream and then asked to throw it away because they were all sticky and uncomfortable. My husband and I ended up throwing away ours too because we had to keep helping the kids and our ice cream melted. Not kid friendly. Great ice cream though. read more
I was really excited to try this cafe because I love Taiyaki Icecream and a friend of mine said that his friend owns this store. If there was a half star rating I would give this place 3.5 even though I think it's an interesting aesthetic spin on the normal taiyaki icecream. This review only reflects one visit but I will come again and update my review. Icecream: 3 or 4 I liked the interesting ice cream flavors they had like Ube and milk tea! Some of them were a bit strong but I think it goes well with the taiyaki. Matcha: 4 Milk tea: 3 Sesame: 3 Taiyaki: 3 While I liked the ice cream I was a bit uneasy because the Taiyaki for the icecream was a bit underdone and the normal taiyaki with filling was really underdone. I thought it was just an off day but they said that taiyaki should be a bit underdone which I've never heard of before. read more
Woahhhhh so damn good!! So many unique soft serve flavors and the taiyaki was the icing on the cake. It was such an enjoyable, warm, crispy, sweet treat that nicely complemented the soft serve ice cream. Tbh all the flavors that we got were exquisite haha. Delicious soft serve in many flavors (matcha, ube, black sesame, milk, milk tea, and Oreo) with three different swirl options each week. For two dollars more, you can add a fish-shaped pastry filled with your choice of yumminess (custard, Nutella, and two other options). You can add this as a topper (recommended) or as a cone (since it is warm, your ice cream will melt faster.) At the end, you can add unlimited crushed cereal and choose to garnish your finished product with a half strawberry or half small macaron. The staff is super friendly and will offer you a chance to try all of the flavors before purchasing. They were fast and helpful and took the time to explain everything to us, even though the place was packed. Major Con: The place is small, with lots of bar-height thin tables to stand around and consume your food. I would not recommend coming inside to try to eat with children (it was a mess). There are no chairs to sit down and no place to put a baby car seat. There are two public benches outside, kind of near by, but both were already occupied and it was 8:30 at night and still so hot. We took the food to another store close by, bought drinks and food there and ate our ice cream there. If not for the seating availability, they would have received five stars. It's very hard to go to eat ice cream with an infant and a toddler and not be able to sit down. I get that the tables can serve more people, but it just wasn't practical for our family. read more

We walked in and the line was almost out the door but it was moving pretty quick! It was very delicious and creamy! We got the upside down ahboong. 10/10 Do yourself a favor and just go. This place is amazing. Did a random Google search of ice cream in the area and came across this wonderful place. I've been twice and have had the horchata soft serve, swirl horchata and Oreo soft serve and the tayaki (taro and red bean). The swirl Oreo/horchata soft serve was my fave and of course the tayaki was delicious. Tayaki was hot and crunchy/soft. Ughhhhh if I could go get it every weekend I would. Tip: i always get the upside down. It's basically ah-bong (cone) plus a cup to hold. Less messy and comes with a half taiyaki with your choice of filling on top instead. Really yummy rich creamy soft serve but the slightly chewy crispy fish-shaped waffles (taiyaki) is the cherry on top! Favorite filling: custard. Taro is runner up (tho so so) Favorite flavors: ube, milk tea, matcha. My mom is a vanilla fan and loves the milk flavor also. They have a variety of toppings you can add for free! The place is always popping especially at night time. Ordering is fast and easy. During covid time, they don't have seating inside so it feels pretty safe going in and out. read more

First timer trying the Taiyaki with Ube Ice cream. Well I've had other taiyaki before but not with Ube ice cream. I was sort of expecting the Ube to be too sweet but it was just perfect. It almost tasted like vanilla, not too much Ube flavor but still pretty good. Got my taiyaki stuffed with red bean (my fave). We tried the taro stuffed taiyaki too but it was just a pasty jelly like stuffing. No real taro. At least the red bean was real. Can't go wrong with any of the flavors. read more

I ordered taiyaki with custard filling, order came out like this, I confirmed with the girl making it, she said "yes, it is custard" but clearly it looks like Nutella inside. I guess she can't tell the difference between custard and Nutella Should have break it in and show her right there read more
