Mind you, my friend next to me hasn't even ordered or paid yet. As my friend is paying, she is straight up ignoring her and having a whole conversation with the white family like we don't exist. The transaction isn't even over, and she doesn't say bye, doesn't say thank you, nothing. Just turns around like we're an inconvenience. Then the music suddenly changes to white pop music... like what is this??? I have NEVER experienced anything like this in my life, and for it to happen at an ice cream shop in Union, NJ, at the hands of another woman of color is NASTY. I got a salted caramel chocolate something. I'm really not doing the flavors justice. So many flavors. I'm going to jump ahead to say everything was scrumptious. This was one of the words the urchins taught me. But I want to share this anecdote. Kid comes in and wants to buy some candy. It's not enough to use a credit card, below their minimum. He doesn't have enough cash. This causes a fight. A fight? Yes. They want him to take it and pay them tomorrow. He doesn't want to take it. They won't let him leave until he does. He reluctantly takes it repeatedly promising he will bring the money tomorrow. They shrug. Shrug I tell you. She tells me, "He's a nice kid he comes in all the time. His brother comes in." Not only did we get to enjoy some of the best gelato we've ever had, but we also had the chance to go behind the scenes and learn about the process. Watching everything made from scratch gave me a whole new appreciation for this craft. The flavors were phenomenal: Mango was juicy and bright Espresso Chip had that bold coffee kick with perfect texture Blueberry Basil was fresh and a little unexpected (in the best way) Coconut was creamy and clean Vanilla Chip (Stracciatella) had delicate chocolate ribbons in a velvety vanilla base--pure perfection The flavors were so delicious, we forgot to take pictures--but we did leave with 5 pints. One of them was Fat Elvis, which tastes like a frozen peanut butter Reese's in the best possible way. Also worth noting: the entire kitchen and shop were spotless. Everything was so clean and organized, it instantly made us trust the freshness and quality of every flavor even more. Mike and Breanna have built something beautiful here, and you can feel their heart in every detail.
