How did I not know that this was here sooner? The store was packed when we walked in so we just knew that we found something good here. The adults had bigger smiles on their faces than the children in here, myself included. We found Black River Candy Shoppe after lunch on the first October weekend and I was in sweet sugary heaven when I walked in. The displays are so inviting to just pick up everything and throw it into your shopping basket. The pre-weighed and pre-priced baggies made it especially easy to shop. They offer every nostalgic favorite mixed with all of the creative seasonal - chocolate foiled wrapped jack o lanterns, sour gummy pumpkin, cherry gummy eyeballs.. I bought it all. The most fun part was bringing my little paper bag full of candy home and dumping it on the counter to share with my family. Everyone's eyes lit up when they saw the festive variety. An absolute treasure to this wonderful town. Fell in love with both the town and the shop. For those of us who are over 45 years of age, we remember some of those old time candies such as the "cigarette" box that really had candy in it. Pez dispensers that are vintage. Mary Janes, these clear blue wrapped hard crystal candies that only our grandparents liked, chocolate dinosaurs within an egg, the list could go on and on. Prices are a tad higher but I believe it's all due to nostalgia. Bringing back the memories of yester years when things just seemed simpler. As you peruse around the shop reminiscing, be sure to get a basket by the front and put some of those beloved candies in for you to take home and share with your kids. I'm such a fan of businesses with charm and Black River Candy Shoppe has it in abundance. Reminiscent of an old country store, they're overflowing with both new and classic candy, some of which I hadn't seen in years. They also have a large selection of wrapped bulk taffy, licorice and chocolates. This is a fun and visually striking store that really takes time to fully browse. Walking around I found myself smiling and remember many of the things I hadn't seen since my childhood. Worth mentioning is that they also have a selection of every single flavor of Bomino Turkish Taffy, my personal favorite candy. If you're in Chester, have a sweet tooth or need a perfect gift for someone who does, you would be remiss not to pay them a visit. My friend and I had a nice little grown-up tea lunch at Sally Lunns and happened to notice this candy shop on our way out. After circling through some other shops, we walked in, and I instantly transported back 20 years. The candy sticks! From PA Dutch Country! 25 cents each! After walking through the store, being very good, I finally caved, walked back to the candy sticks, and purchased four. Anyone who knows me is aware that I don't do sweets. There are very few exceptions to this - cake from Old Man Rafferty's, Girl Scout Cookies (I'm lookin' at you, Thin Mints!), and British Cadbury. Having spent my early childhood living abroad, real milk Cadbury bars and Mars bars were the only chocolates I ate. I never developed a taste for American chocolates like Hershey's or Nestle, and the American versions of the brands I knew and loved tasted nothing like what I grew up with. I knew of a few places where I could get real, genuine imported Cadbury bars, but they sold out quickly and replenishment stock was oftentimes delayed in coming in. I had all but given up on being able to enjoy pieces of my childhood until I came upon Black River Candy Shoppe. The store itself is pretty good sized for a candy store. As soon as you walk in, you see boxes and barrels and cases of colorful sweets - from modern candies to our grandparents' childhood favorites, this place pretty much has anything you could think of. The Man is pretty sweet on their maple candies and caramels, so we always grab some of those when we stop by. They have nearly a thousand different candies, so we sometimes pick up something we've never tried before to see if we like it. By the time we make our way back to the front of the store, it's not surprising for us to bring home $50+ worth of candies and chocolates. There's is something for pretty much everybody, and they will even take orders by phone or email and ship them to you. Their store is clean and cozy, and their website is well maintained with updates on what candies are back in stock. If you love sweets or are looking for hard-to-find candies, this is the place for you. There's ample parking and lots of other shops to visit while you're in the area so the trip out will be even more worthwhile! read more

This place has more candy than I would ever know what to do with. It's incredible what you walk into when you first set foot in this store. They have all this new candy and old school candy, things you thought you may never see again. For me, it brings back a lot of childhood memories of my favorite candies and my young daughter loves going here and selecting a huge variety of candies. They have everything from Pop Rocks to rock candy; cigarette candy sticks to Nerds; every type of gummy you can imagine - sweet, sour, worms, cherries, bears - you name it. Candy you haven't seen in a million years is likely to be found here, transporting you back to your childhood. There's tons of chocolate too - white, dark, milk - anything your heart desires. Nearly all of the candy is situated in barrels, which you gives you a fun option for just grabbing a handful and moving on to the next. I'm pretty sure this is what heaven looks like. My boyfriend is originally from near Chester, and one day when we were visiting his parents- his dad, my boyfriend and I came here. (His dad always gets jellybeans as stocking stuffers here) They have probably every kind of candy you could possibly imagine here. My local source for U.K. chocolates! Compared to American chocolates, they have a stronger and cleaner chocolate. But check the expiration dates (Day-Month-Year), U.K. chocolates have less fillers, so they have a shorter shelf life. This place has a huge selection of candy and most likely has your favorites. OUTSTANDING! My wife and were visiting from California a few months ago and stopped in. I don't remember the store being here when I lived in Morris County nine years ago, so it was pretty new to me! Here in Chico, there is a similar store, as well as a few in Sacramento that I have been to. I have to say, Black River blows away the other candy stores I have been to! They have a GREAT selection of old time and imported candies. I grabbed a few bags of Bassett's Jelly Babies when we visited and as I was running out, I ordered some from an on-line retailer that took the order and then proceeded to let me know they were on back order. I remembered Black River had some and contacted Steve, the owner. He stil had some in stock and was VERY professional! Got my order processed and they arrived today! It's a sign of how blessed and lucky I am that this store - with a wide array of candy from the US and England, including many nostalgic items that are hard to find - disappointed us. It is aggressively priced, shall we say, and other mega-candy stores we have visited do this niche better. Cracker Barrel, for example, does many of the nostalgic items at far better prices. Dylan's in Manhattan, of course, is just so much bigger. And Wegman's does many of the European candies, again, more cheaply. Even the hilariously named Fruit Bowl in Cumberland MD does this segment better. That said, if you are in that area with kids, it is a fun stop. Just be prepared for sticker-shock. (And, of course, there are internet sites that sell almost all of this stuff now - but it is definitely more fun to buy and eat from an actual store.)
