I only came here at Solvang Restaurant to buy their Aebleshiver. These circular shaped pancakes is what they are famous for besides their Danish foods served in their restaurant which I have not tried yet. I ordered the Aebleshiver from the outside window. The lady who took my order wasn't too smiley. Anyway, the order came with 3 of them covered with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. It was $4.90 which wasn't too bad. I should have gotten it with a la mode because the circular pancake was dense and slightly dry. It didn't have enough jam and powdered sugar either IMHO. Some ice cream would have softened it a bit. Maybe next time I'll dine in and try the a la mode version. This place is quite popular. Wait time may be very long so come early. It's one of the preferred places to eat while in Solvang. We tell him we need more time please. He then informs us the place is closing at 3pm. That was frustrating because we felt rushed at that point. Wish the hostess had warned us before seating us! The food was CRAP. We ordered beef dip sandwich (my friend had 2 bites said she's had better at Arby's), the turkey cranberry croissant (the cranberry was this gross gelatin rigid slob that clearly came from a can), the abelskivers (the best thing we had but that's not saying a lot), and the side of sausage (cold, flavorless and inedible). Prices too much for this horrible quality of food!!! We left hungry and pissed off we spent $60 on that meal. Also sandwiches came first, then the abelskivers then the sausage...huh?! Sorry I think this is a tourist trap. Its in the downtown area in a street of many small shops and where majority of tourists are. Theres a little takeout window with only a bench outside. The aebleskivers are not freshly made but heated with a heat lamps. Ordering was quite fast and price wasn't bad. The only thing was when biting into it I expected something more eggy/fluffy/fresh and I ended up getting a pancake mix/flour taste. The raspberry sauce is slightly tart. Perhaps inside the restaurant is a different experience, though I found most of the towns pastries tasted more manufactured than freshly baked despite going around 12 on the weekend. read more

The place is a must when in Solvang. Stopped for breakfast on my way to San Francisco. The wait was a bit long but once seated the food came out pretty fast once we ordered. We each ordered an egg breakfast , all were delicious and yummy. Of course we tried he ableskivers and that was the best part. These balls of pancakes tasting perfect and the jam was the best. Temperatures have been soaring into the 90's so my wife and I chose to have breakfast early and explore Solvang in the morning before it got too hot. The day before while walking around Solvang many of the locals recommended the Solvang Restaurant for breakfast. I can't say they were wrong. First of all we were the first customers through the door when they opened at 7 am. We were the only customers for at least 20 minutes. The waitress welcomed us warmly and quickly brought us a cup of coffee. My wife and I split an omelette and hash browns which were huge and delicious. The Aebleskivers took a little longer being the pans hadn't gotten fully heated as early as we arrived. We both felt it was worth the wait. We left stuffed and enjoyed the food and the staff. The restaurant look and feel definitely sticks to the whole Danish vibe that is Solvang. We thought it added to the experience and added character. I would eat here again. read more

The name literally means "apple slices" in Danish, although apples are not usually an ingredient in present-day versions. The crust is similar in texture to European pancakes, but with a light and fluffy interior similar to a Yorkshire pudding. The famed æbleskiver is the one "must-order" item that everyone carries on about when visiting Solvang. So much so that there's a whole shop dedicated to nothing but making these Danish bad boiz. Through various means, we've been skunked on getting some æbleskiver during our previous visits. Either the line was too long or the place was sold out for the day; getting snubbed on two separate visits didn't sit well with us, so we aimed to get some this last trip--by hook or by crook! After much research, Solvang Restaurant seemed to fit our lives as they opened early (0700), well-before the massive horde of tourists shows up, and they serve them all day until they're sold out, of course. Let's just say that after the first visit--we were hooked! One order of three was definitely not enough for two to share as the crunchy exterior gave way to a delicate, almost custardy center. The raspberry jam was the perfect foil to the rich batter, as its sweet and slightly sour flavor tied it together beautifully. It was so good we had to stop by on a second morning to get another taste of the action, but this time, they were taking an awfully long time to come out of the kitchen. The friendly waitress alerted us that they were having "trouble with the pan." Not sure if that's code for 'operator error,' but by the time they showed up, they were nowhere near as good as the first batch. A bit burnt, overcooked, and not as custardy. They were a real letdown. :( I'm going to throw out the second experience as a bad day/snafu type of situation and assume day one is what you'd normally get. Conclusion: Great place to get your Æbleskiver on in Solvang. Pro Tip: Get here early to beat the crowd. read more

The Denver Omelette is the BEST omelette I've ever had and I've had plenty!! First off the restaurant itself is really cute. I went in with the intention to try Solvang's specialty, Æbleskiver and ended staying for breakfast. In the heart of Solvang, with so many options I'm glad I decided to eat here. The service was great as well. Coffee kept coming to have a full hot cup, freshly brewed. The wheat toast was also so delicious. It tasted freshly baked and like true authentic wheat bread. Aebleskivers! That is one of the first things I wanted to eat upon arrival. This resto had a long line in aebleskivers to go line. We opted to dine in with no waiting. This dessert item (or breakfast) is a big pancake ball with powered sugar dipped in raspberry jam. They are deliciously good! I tried the Danish sausage and cheese in a croissant. It's tasty. I'd give it 3.5 stars. Good but, not remarkable. Glad they had decaf herbal tea as well. Our server was excellent and attentive although busy. We dined in at that odd time between lunch and dinner-- linner! They were getting ready to close up shop by the time we were about finished. This is one of the more-notable places to visit for a traditional trio of aebleskivers when in town. The restaurant opens early (7:00 a.m.) - but closes early, as well. For this reason, my review is only for the aforementioned Danish treats (since we passed by about 5-minutes before their 3:00 p.m. closing time). The menu of breakfast and lunch items looked delicious - and undoubtedly showcases the Danish fare for which Solvang owes its renowned status. I really wish I could have been able to try more of their offerings but felt it unfair to arrive so near closing time and expect to be seated - though we were not dissuaded from entering for our to-go aebleskiver order. I do note, however, that the "closed" sign was promptly flipped over at the appointed hour. (We were still outside the restaurant at that time). What can I say? It was an aebleskiver - but, in a town with such a wide variety of freshly baked, enticingly decorated goodies in virtually every window, it hit me as neither the pinnacle of culinary greatness for the palette nor the eye. (Maybe an upgrade to the version with ice cream could have possibly "wow-ed" me to a greater degree?) I hope this isn't taken as Danish blasphemy, but it was just okay. I honestly believe if our group would have been able to sample more of their menu, I could have increased my rating to five stars, but I'm holding at a four-star rating for now. It's really not the fault of the business that they closed at their advertised time, so I'll just have save a bump in rating for my next visit (and an earlier arrival time). First time having the Danish sausage and Tilsit cheese. The cheese was unique. It tasted mild and nutty. As for the Aebleskiver, it was bland.
