The views are absolutely breathtaking, the restaurant is spotless, and even the restrooms were immaculate. You can tell they take pride in every detail. The service was exceptional. My son is a very picky eater and pretty much only eats salmon and Wendy's nuggets. Even though salmon wasn't on the menu, the staff went above and beyond to make it happen for him, seasoned simply with salt and pepper and cooked extra well done. He loved every bite. That level of customer service is hard to find. The food was outstanding, the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the general manager was genuinely kind. They were even hosting a private event, yet still found a way to make room for us and made us feel completely welcome instead of rushed. This unexpected side quest ended up being one of the highlights of our drive along the coast. Amazing food, incredible service, unforgettable ocean views, and a team that truly cares about its guests. I would absolutely recommend Sur House to anyone in the area, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm driving through.

Most of the customers when were there were blonde and beautiful, wearing Burberry. We may go back again but not sure since we get treated so much better in town at places like Stokes Adobe. The only odd moment happened in the store one evening. I went to get ice cream, and a young employee walked over as if she was about to scoop and take my order. When I told her the flavor I wanted, she suddenly said, "Oh, I'm sorry, I'm no longer serving ice cream. You can grab an option from the freezer instead." It was unusual--especially since it was only 8:45 PM and the posted store hours didn't indicate that ice cream service had stopped.

This place is tucked right in the redwoods along the river, the setting alone makes it worth the stop. It has that rustic, laid-back mountain vibe that feels authentic and unpretentious. We stopped in after exploring Big Sur and it was the perfect place to unwind. The food hit the spot (great comfort options), the drinks were strong, and the atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming. If there's live music, even better -- it really adds to the whole experience. It's not a fancy fine-dining spot, but that's exactly the charm. It feels local, relaxed, and full of character. Definitely a must-visit if you're in the area and want good food, good drinks, and a true Big Sur vibe.

The line for the burritos and other quick stop food is in the general store, expect long lines! This seems to be one of the most popular big sur road trip stops and everyone is getting food here. We spent probably around 30-40 minutes here just walking around and then waiting for food/bathroom lines. The woman's bathroom was pretty clean and surprisingly had no line, though I can't say it'd be like that all the time! The burritos themselves were $18 each and I guess that is just the cost of burritos in CA nowadays, though there was nothing really special about them, just ingredients slapped together. I'd probably rather get something to go from an earlier location/grocery store next time.

It was a cool, breezy night, typical when the summer marine layer moves in over Carmel, but the propane heaters kept us toasty. If you prefer dining indoors, the interior bar and dining spaces had an intimate, funky, but very cool vibe. The host and servers were all extremely friendly and helpful. Despite being outside in the courtyard, they were also incredibly attentive, checking frequently to see if we needed anything. Their recommendations were spot on, too. I was wowed by the cocktail menu. I'll have to return to try more of their bar offerings. This trip, I took advantage of Happy Hour to order the blood orange margarita, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the ceviche appetizer. My greyhound thought it smelled as wonderful as I did. He rested his head between my feet in hopes of catching any ceviche dropping from my hands. This was so tasty, he was out of luck on the table droppings. I also had the chicken enchiladas for my entree. It was one of the best enchiladas I've had in a couple of years. My server, Mario, brought me out a small cup of their take on Mexican hot chocolate, made with oat milk, as an aperitif. It was so delicious, I almost wished I'd ordered a full cup as dessert.

The service was pleasant, although at times it felt a little condescending. They have their own very specific tequila collection, so don't expect to see many familiar brands. That's not necessarily a bad thing. We're always willing to try something new. The margaritas, however, were very tart. Just too much lime juice. We ordered tacos and asked for flour tortillas, only to be surprised when they arrived on corn tortillas. When we asked about it, we were told they simply don't serve flour tortillas. Fair enough, but that would have been helpful to know when we ordered. The good news: the chicken tinga, barbacoa, and carnitas were all excellent. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get past the corn tortillas which fell apart when you tried to eat the tacos. Ended up using a fork. For dessert, we ordered one of our favorites, churros. They arrived warm, but were very dry and tough. A churro should make you happy. These made us wish we'd stopped for dessert somewhere else. There were definitely some bright spots, especially the meats and the cozy atmosphere, but restaurants generally get one first chance to make us want to come back. Unfortunately, this one didn't.

Monique got us seated, gave us a couple of options, and we were very happy with where we ended up. We started with the skewered abalone and beef tartare, which wasn't even part of the regular menu. It was a wonderful initial surprise and absolutely delicious. For the first course, we had the Heirloom Tomato and Vermilion Crudo. The Heirloom Tomato was probably my favorite dish of the night right away. It really highlighted the tomato while complementing it with fish and squid on the side. It was an incredible dish. Next came the Crab Tagliolini and Sweet Corn Tortellini. Both were amazing, with incredible textures and bold, well-developed flavors. Everything about this course was very impressive. For the next course, we had the Squab and Wagyu Steak. The Wagyu was absolutely amazing, but the Squab was truly phenomenal. The preparation really made it stand out, it was incredibly flavorful, had an amazing texture, and was cooked perfectly. Definitely one of the highlights of the entire dinner. We decided to add the raw cheeses as an in-between course before dessert. It was a nice addition, although compared with the other courses, it was probably the least memorable for me. Dessert was the perfect way to finish the evening. The Stone Fruit and Mille-Feuille were both excellent and brought the entire experience together beautifully. A huge shout-out to Chui, Nate, Paige, and Molly for presenting each dish so beautifully and taking the time to explain the details behind everything. Special thanks as well to Executive Chef Johnny Black for putting together such an amazing set of dishes and pairing them so thoughtfully with the wines. Overall, this was an incredible dining experience, creative, beautifully executed, professional, and memorable from beginning to end. Every course felt carefully thought out, and the service made the entire evening even more special.
