Fine mechanics took the chance to stick it to somebody that had no idea what they had giving them a very confusing expensive option, then started trying to charge him 50 bucks a day storage after what they knew would happen not being able to pay the repair bills or the storage fees they gladly took the car resulting in the kid having a sign over the title. Bingo bango Nice Nissan cube with an easy fix that they'll probably make a bunch of money on. Now the kids out the 5 grand they paid for that car not very long ago. I have been a customer of Sol's for about 20 years, since moving to Detroit from San Diego., Calif. If you are a car owner, you know how important it is to have a mechanic you can trust, particularly if you're neither a gearhead or care about learning more on how cars work. Henry, who must be the proprietor despite the name of the shop, is an old-school grease monkey who is plain-spoken and quick with a quip. He and his crew are thorough, polite and efficient. Here is the caveat: you are paying a premium for the service and "staying local," as the term is used. In other words, an oil change may cost a bit more at Sol's that. A Quick-Lube chain shop. That premium becomes pro rata higher as the repair becomes more expensive. I believe in supporting local business, and I am very loyal to Sol's, but the last time I went in and learned the a/c compressor needed replacement on my Lincoln, it would have been between $600-$1,000 more at Sol's than other shops nearby. (Sol's was $2,250; I found competitors charging anywhere from $1,350-$1,750.) read more

I was initially recommended due to its proximity to take my car in for some emergency service at this car care center however, they completely took advantage, and ripped me off overcharging two times what the service is performed would have been at any other center. Trust is an important component for any continuing business relationship, and I will never give them another penny of my money. I took my car in on Thursday for an overheating problem and the exhaust. This was the first day after a big windstorm and power was out all over the area. Henry told me what he thought the problem was and gave me a quote, but due to lack of power they couldn't work on it. They didn't get their power back till Monday, though they kept in touch to let me know what was going on. I know a lot of people are hesitant to use Mom & Pop type repair shops for fear of being ripped off or getting "extra work" recommended. A reputation well earned over the years. But I'll opt for them over a dealer or Goodyear repair center any day. I usually like the service, like the friendliness of it, and usually the owners tend to be my neighbors. This place is no difference. The guy behind the counter when you drop off your car (Henry) is a really friendly guy, and I've run into him around town and he remembers me. That's another way I judge whether I can trust him... If I run into him at the grocery store with a seemingly endless supply of cans of bean soup projectiles within reach, Henry doesn't want me to be pissed off at him. Fortunately, he's never let me down. They are very good at letting me know what's wrong, what really needs repair, what will need repair, and what can wait. They work on everything (I have a Subaru, my wife a Pontiac, and they've done great work on both). They work very quickly and have late enough hours (7pm, I believe) that I can actually get there by bike after work to pick up the car. I've had substantial work done at their shop and they did it quickly and I've never had to go back and claim something wasn't done right. They've never stolen the change out of my car, and they always leave the car clean (though they don't wash it like the dealer, but they were $200 cheaper than the dealer for a clutch - I could buy a lot of car washes for $200). I don't get the sense that they have ever treated my wife with disrespect when she's been there. And something that is truly amazing, they even talked directly to her, with me standing right there! Now there's a rarity for you... The only complaints I have are that they don't have a loaner vehicle and they have suggested work that is a pretty substantial cost that wasn't really imperative. They are clear to say it just a recommendation, but still I'm the kind of guy who has a sense of what needs to be done when and I only want to hear about what's imperative now. But that's a minor quibble I suppose. Anyway, Sol's is a great little old school repair shop that does great work. read more

My husband and I are rather new to the area and when issues arise with either of our vehicles we are clueless as to who is the 'good guy' when it comes to automobile help. My car battery has not been holding a charge and I thought "'oh great.. I do not have a clue who a good mechanic would be to look at electrical issues". I did not want to go to the dealer for two reasons - the price and I think Toyota has enough business right now due to their own problems. :{ My first thought was that my battery drain could be linked to my remote car starter I had installed 4-5 yrs ago when living in Upstate NY. Therefore, I looked up the brand of remote starter I had installed on-line for local business that still work with the same brand to see if they could help. Found Auto One Glass & Accessories of Berkley thinking they could help... boy was I wrong. No customer service what so ever. The guy spoke to me like I was a moron. Because of that interaction I was kind of glad they could not help me. So, my next step was to have someone look at the electrical to see if there was something wrong there to cause the battery drain. I thought I would check Yelp to see if something caught my eye.. and I saw Dave's solo review on Sol's Complete Car Care.. close to where we live and I like to support the little guys when ever possible. I called Sol's this morning (after the joyful talk w/ Auto One), spoke w/ Henry and explained my dilemma. Henry listened and was very friendly - such a nice change from the gentleman I had spoke to at Auto One. He explained they would take a look at it and the price would start at about $82. Dropped my car off and waited for a call later in the day. I ended up needing someone to pick me up, which they were able to do .. I could have gotten a ride home from the shop after dropping my car off had I needed it. Well, after all the testing turns out everything with my car is fine (i.e. electrical, alternator,etc.) except the battery & it's a bad cell. Explains why it wasn't holding a charge. Unfortunately this isn't the first time I have encountered this. I must be the perfect one to find the bad batteries! :( Henry ended up only charging me half the price of the original estimate he had given me - wonderful news! I be going back to where I purchased my battery (Sears) to get another one..hopefully it will be a good one. I will definitely return to Sol's for any future care issues & maintenance. Super friendly service and it is nice to have someone who cares enough to take the time to make sure their customers fully understand what the problem is and how they are going to go about trying to fix it. No unnecessary 'just because' fixes to make the bill more expensive. Behind the counter is a piece of paper that says "We are here because of the customer." Wish my experience was as positive as the other reviewer. My car was towed there because I had heard that he was reputable. After the car was in several pieces I found out that my estimate was way too high for what the car required. I paid it and the car started making unusual noises within a couple days. I traded it in fast before I was stranded again. I won't be refering anyone to Henry. read more

I went to sol's to get a windshield washer fluid pump replaced. The cost was reasonable. A day after the repair it stopped working properly so i took it back in. I wasn't sure if they were going to charge me extra to evaluate or pay for the cost of a new pump. The question of cost wasn't even discussed and I was nervous to broach the topic. After it was done, they were like "see ya later!" I didn't have to pay a single dime more. I thought that was extremely honorable of them. While they offer to drive you to your home if you live nearby, I elected to hang out there instead. I noticed that the man at the front, Henry, is very easy going and a straight shooter. I also noticed that many of the people who came in knew him and had probably been taking their car there for quite some time. When you find an honest mechanic you keep coming back. I have just dropped a car here for a 'once over' and somethings I had concerns about. I'm new to Berkley, and I like to keep money in the local system. I generally steer clear of large corporate stores or chains. I feel the staff tend to be disingenuous at corporate stores. From the opening of the door I felt comfortable. I know enough about cars to not sound completely ignorant. I grew up around 3+ mechanics/motor heads. Henry greeted me pleasantly. He listened to everything I had to say. No condescension, cutting me off, etc. Henry was upfront about cost and I believed him when he said to me 'your safety is the number one priority.' We were having a problem with our car, turned out it was the wheel hub bearing. We made an appointment the day before, dropped the car off at 9:15am, had a phone call with the problem by 10:45am and the car was ready to pick up by 12:25pm. I do not know a lot about cars and if this was just an easy problem to fix, but I am impressed by the quick turn around and thorough communication. Comparing prices online for this problem, they are also reasonably priced (at least for this issue). The gentleman we worked with was super nice and I believe his name is Henry. I have only lived in the area for a year and this is the first time I had to take my car into a repair shop in the area. I choose the one closest to my house and I am glad that I did. It was a pleasure talking to Henry and I am sure he was sick of hearing from me when I called him for progress reports but he was always very nice and let me know exactly what they were working on. I was quoted a price and when I went to pick up my car after the repairs were finished the price was less, which is always nice from a repair shop. As a woman I feel extremely comfortable going to Sol's for all my repair needs in the metro area. They gave me a list what other repairs are recommended but can be done slowly, they also included quotes on each service. I know there are some repair shops that will tell you, you need repairs just to make money and Sol's will not repair anything that isn't needed at that moment! Took my car in to see why it was misfiring and they automatically assumed it was a tune-up. They did not do compression test or read the codes. They kept the car several days before working on it also keeping it outside when it was snowing. Henry (the guy behind the counter) stated that the car will probably need an engine. So I began to price some and they quoted me 1000 higher on a motor from the same source. The part supplier stated the shop was attempted to overcharge as they only charge 800 for it. So Sols added an additional 1000 on top of repair cost. Then they made me pay for a tune-up which I didn't really need. Do not do business here they are not honest people. read more

This place is great. They are friendly and caring. I started going there by accident when my car stopped running and had to be towed. This place was the closest to walk to from my car. I have been going there ever since. They are reasonably priced and are not pushy about anything. I do wish they were open on the weekends though. read more

I was driving on 696 and all of a sudden my check engine light started flashing and dinging at me so I did what any normal girl would do.....I pulled over and panicked! I found myself in Berkeley not knowing what to do. I googled towing places near my location thinking I'd have it towed back to Farmington Hills (where I live). The wonderful guy at Sol's who answered the phone said unfortunately he couldn't get it until the morning but he'd be happy to tow it to his place and diagnose it for me. Best. Decision. Ever! Not only did it turn out to be a minor repair, they fixed it the next day, reasonably priced and now my jeep works better than ever! I will also be returning for some other minor repair work they quoted at their wonderfully reasonable price. It's a little way from where I live but I've found a new car repair place.
