Other reviewers mentioned to keep track of your subtotal because mistakes (in the store's favor) happen at the register. I kinda made it clear as I put my items on the counter that I was adding it all up, and I didn't have any problems. Other reviews also mentioned that foods were expired. Yes, I saw a few expired. I checked carefully after seeing those complaints. But most items I saw were not expired. And I need to clarify that nothing was technically "expired" it was just past the "best if used by" date. I did feel they pay attention to this at Solomon because of the few outdated items, they were only slightly past the "best if" and "best if" dates are not the same as expired. I visited another discount grocery store and that other store REALLY didn't care there. Pretty much everything was well beyond dates listed. Food offerings at the time I visited were kind of polarized. Healthiest health foods, or junkiest junk foods, then some specialty novelty food items, and ethnic foods leftover from holiday time. I got some Fiesta seconds bread plates for feeding my cats, some $0.50 cute rubbery banana/carrot/hot pepper pencil cases for my kid, non-expired organic bone broth, $5 kid tool belt, and $0.25 canvas coin purses that you can prime with primer paint (it's canvas) and let kids paint anything over the existing cheesy messages. I didn't really "need" anything I bought, but the purchases have brought some joy so it was a fruitful visit. read more

This place is great to find random "treasures" it's a discount store so they get things that didn't sell from other places or maybe overstocked items! A lot of high end organic and fancy foods which I love searching thru and seeing what you will find! They also have household items too, plates, soap, cleaners, clothes...it's really a surprise on what you will find, and the best part everything is priced very reasonably! Went here after my girlfriend recommended the store to me. In the last two months or so, we have been shopping discount food stores as many of them offer great savings on quality food and household items. This store is no different. I purchased an energy bar, oatmeal, and a 10-pk of K-cup coffee pods all for $4.20. If these items were purchased at first-line, if you will, grocery retailers my total would have probably been $8-$10 more. Some of the items had expired dates. It is also a second-line, if you will once again, grocery retailer so that is to be expected. If one does not consider that, then this place is an excellent place to shop. The cashier and manager (and maybe owner) were nice very nice and friendly. I mostly spoke with the cashier and she made me feel very welcomed to have shopped there. The next time I am in that area, since I am a beach dweller, I will definitely find myself visiting the store again. read more

You have to take this place for what it is, a discount emporium. This is not Walmart, and this is not Trader Joe's. They have a limited amount of things and it changes pretty much every day. Some of the stuff is out of date and some of the stuff is not and you just never know what you're going to find. Today I found in date boxes of decaffeinated black tea for $.50 apiece. By the counter they had boxes of Mucinex allergy 80 pills for four dollars. They expired in the end of January this year. They have a refrigerated section that has various items in it today there wasn't much in there some days there's a lot of things like cheeses and yogurts and organic things I'm not sure where they get it from but they're usually just out of date or about to go out of date. The guy that owns it is super nice. It's pretty clean inside and they are organizing it fairly nicely now. Sometimes they'll have racks of Bulk Foods like a 5 pound can of mustard in case you need it... I like it because they always have some various gluten-free items that are usually in date and I don't know where they get them from but they are about a quarter the price of the regular store. It's fun to pop in once in a while and see what you find. read more

This place is basically like a mom and pop's Big Lots or Ollie's. They buy short dated, limited edition, damaged product, etc. And then sell it super cheap!!! Every time you come here, it's a new adventure!! You never know what kind of inventory has come in so let the bargain hunt begin :) The place is relatively organized into a food section then home goods. It can be a bit messy, because they are trying to get stuff out the door as soon as it arrives. Check out their Facebook page - they post as new items arrive. I don't come here often enough. We got a ton of stuff for $17. Yes, the place is very interesting, one side of the store sells organic/natural stuff the other side party supplies. Lots of really great deals on food. I don't really care for everything else. I wasn't brave enough to purchase anything from the freezer. The food we got didn't kill us, it wasn't stale or scary. I feel like if they had a tiny storefront in riverside with just the organic/natural stuff, they would make a killing. Maybe if they got rid of some of the weird stuff and made the place look nicer , they would gain more clientele. I will return again. read more

It is great to see how many people love this place because I am one of them. I always find some great items here once we were looking for things for a new house that we were renting and found a queen size bed sofa and two chairs all for $100. When I took it home the bed was actually quite comfortable. What made me laugh was when I took off the cushions and there was a sign that said "additional sheets are available in the shelves above the TV courtesy of Quality Inn". I knew it looked familiar LOL The owner is Always busy running the store but not too busy to help out a customer. One day somebody poured salsa all over the steering wheel and front seats of my car. When I asked for a paper towel he asked what happened and when I told him, he came out and cleaned it for me. I protested but he insisted. What a guy! My husband and I are kind of a little obsessed with this place. We try to go every couple of weeks just to see what strange new stuff they have, and we've only walked out without buying something maybe once. Usually we end up dropping $20 on things we didn't even know we had to have! Generally we stick to the grocery section, which is full of lightly damaged or just barely expired boxed and bagged food, often strange trendy "healthy" food like Pop Chips or lentil chips or organic mac and cheese or gluten free everything, some of which is amazing and ends up becoming a regular purchase at our local grocery, some of which is kind of terrible but I only spent 50 cents or a dollar on an entire bag so I don't feel too bad pitching it. I've only had a product that was "bad" once, and it was just that a bag of Starbursts had become a giant multicolored block of Starbursts, which is mostly just difficult to eat. We don't often venture over to the "stuff" section, with overstock underpants and $5 computer chairs, but we've found some great foil pans and paper cups and plates for party purposes there and I think they may still have some of the nice but pricey sets of dishes they had the first time we ever visited. The widest [and sometimes weirdest] thrift store selection I've seen in Jacksonville. They seem to have anything and everything, at least on a rotating basis. The merchandise seems to be a mix of used thrift store items and new items that were overstocks [or just plain bad ideas, check the CD rack, seriously]. The last time I was in they had a wide selection of crazy African princess statues, brand new, just as an example. I will say that the book and vinyl records selection here is not that good, though, which is a black mark for a thrift store. I don't know if its picked over by the time I get there or if they just don't have much, but its always pretty slim. On the plus side, its pretty clean and organized and the people who run it are very nice and friendly. If you're the kind of person who even barely likes thrift stores, this is a must visit. read more

I almost don't want to review Solomon's! I don't want everyone to shop there...there isn't enough awesomeness for everyone! I've gotten veggie dogs for $1, chips (various gourmet highend) for 50 CENTS, Better than Boulion for 89 CENTS, Brie for 50 cents...totally random in what you will find from visit to visit. I want to go everyday! You can go down the same aisle three times and see something you didn't see just a minute ago on each aisle cruising. Prom dresses? Check! Tuxedo? Check. Comic books? check! things that scare me under the tables? check! Silk butterflies for my kiddos birthday party decorations? they got em! Wine? Yep! K cups? Yep! Tea, coffee, odd things in packages...those African Princess statues are still there!! Boxes of Bolts? Yep! I am pretty sure that the people who work there don't know everything they have! Hidden gem. Looks can be deceiving. This is my favorite place to discount shop. They always have unique items and since it's a salvage store it's a bit of everything but you must get it when you see it or it will be gone. You have to hunt for thing in the store... It's a real salvage store. I've scored unreal bargains here. Huge variety of name brand organic products and snacks for unheard of prices. For instance the same chips I paid 4.00 for in Whole Foods, I found here for .50. It appears to be family owned and the guy who owns it is very nice and welcoming. I scored a adidas shirt pull over for 5.00. A Cole Haan jack for 8.00 the list goes on and on. read more

It's not fantastic but it's not terrible. It's a solid ok and that's A-okay. Timing and luck determines your experience. Still though, it's worth the stop if you're in the area. You never know what they'll have and what you want. Do check the expiration dates in food products. Sometimes they have really gourmet stuff for cheap. A weekly adventure for my daughter and me....... We go at least every Sat morning, and I try and go at least one other day during the week. You have to go weekly, as items change up so fast. Get on their Facebook page, as they have been great lately posting if they have gotten a huge truckload of something. You never know what your gonna get, and if you really like something, STOCK UP, because it won't be there the next time you go back!!!!! I go so often that I know almost everyone there... Between Yelp and my mother, I had heard quite a bit about Solomon Ventures and finally made my way there recently. It was much bigger than I had imagined it would be and packed with the most random items. My roommate was surprised to find Kraft salad cream (apparently an English thing, I'd never even heard of it) on the shelves. I picked up an armful of items (whole wheat couscous, salt and vinegar pop chips, throwaway cooking pans, etc). The food items are basically all past or very close to their expiration dates but the items I found don't expire until November, which isn't bad at all. I think the best way to check this place out is with no expectations because then you're bound to find something you can't live without. I got 5 or 6 items and since they were doing 10% off, I only spent $4.50. The location is a bit out of the way but if you're around, it's a fun place to explore. read more

This place is a health nuts heaven. It's full of organic, vegan, vegetarian, all natural, gluten free and the best part, usually $1 but all under $3-EVERYTHING IS UNDER $3! As a poor adult in her 20's that likes to eat healthy - Solomon Ventures is the only way I've survived. They have all kinds of organic food (refrigerated and non) like hummus, pasture eggs, soy/almond/rice/hemp milk and beyond, a great selection of cheeses(Brie, goat, Camembert, nut and vegan cheese) tofu, cookies, chips, crackers, commitments (olive, hemp, canola oil) almond butter -- seriously like a dollar health food store. They also have a bunch of other random things such as house supplies, trash bags, toilet paper, house decor. I've bought cool things like Kleen Kanteen, glass straws, vintage clothing, furniture, biodegradable poop bags (dogs), camping supplies, jewelry, etc. You have to go every week to see the new selection. Solomons is the best kept secret in Jacksonville!!! PERIOD. They get a little bit of everything and since I started shopping there on a consistent basis, I have saved our family so much money! My daughter has a gluten and dairy allergy and I can find SO much for her here. They now carry organics and cold foods in their fridge section. The owner and his staff are always so good to our family when we shop there and the owners' granddaughter is super sweet as is the woman who runs the register most days. To be a true Solomon Venturer, you would need to go more than once a week. I am a mother of 3 and a teacher and I could not have had the great school functions, kids parties, and more without Solomons. You can get clothes, wine, automotive stuff, pet products, toys...I even got a sandbox there once!! If you have never been...you must check it out! read more
