My home's main breaker arced and failed, leaving many circuits inoperable. I contacted a few electricians and learned it would not be a simple breaker replacement. Arcing melted a critical part of my panel, and no replacement parts were available due to age. To replace my panel, I found that newer city and SDGE rules meant I had to install a new panel in a different location. That meant I also needed a new longer SDGE service line to reach it. I was warned that this type of project can take months start to finish because of the many checkpoint and inspection appointments involved. I initially contacted Solomon Electrical Services among a few other contractors to understand what I was facing. Even on preliminary calls before I'd chosen a contractor, Phillip stood out. He called me back on his day off to clarify and understand my situation better, then took the initiative to track down my SDGE planner (whose name I'd not provided to him yet) on the next business day to get further technical details. Phillip's initiative and willingness to invest his time to understand my project scope gave me confidence his team would do the job right and leave no detail to chance. A 90ft trench, conduit, service wire installation, backfill, and concrete repair work added complexity and expense to the project beyond a simple panel replacement. I selected Solomon Electrical after Phillip provided a written quote that clearly explained what was included and excluded, along with a fair price. Given his efforts to understand the project and his no-nonsense approach so far, I was confident I would not get any unexpected financial surprises. He coordinated the project professionally, handling the hassle of appointments and inspections with Dig-Alert, SDGE, and the city permit department. Because the trench crossed my driveway, bricks and walkway, I worried about tree roots, and how the repair would look once completed. Santiago and crew led the demo, trenching, backfill, hauling, and repair to the driveway and walkway. They did a great job putting things back together and managed to keep critical roots intact. Yes this all took a longer time as predicted due to the myriad scheduling requirements. But the entire Solomon Electrical team was thorough, knowledgeable, direct, and professional in all their work. Ghosting customers is rude! If you expect followup / customer service with issues after the initial job, you may be very disappointed as I am now. I hired this company to install 2 ceiling fans in my home. I admit that I was very pleased with the service received on the installations. Less than 5 months later, one of the fans would not turn off and after 2 weeks of trying, they would not set a time to come investigate the cause. I was not asking for, or expecting, any free service. I just wanted my problem solved. A little honesty or even fake concern would have gone a long way with me. read more

Phillip is my go to Electrician. He has a good work ethic, is fair, and has done a great job. He has been my electrician for many years.

Our breaker had been tripping throughout the evening, into the morning (not fun in the cold /very convenient that this should happen on a Friday evening). SDGE came out but there wasn't anything they could do on their end. So, our management company finally sent one of their maintenance guys out in the late morning, but he wasn't able to do anything but reset the breaker. They finally sent out Phillip on an emergency basis, and he was great. Super personable, and kind. He replaced our breaker, and explained exactly what happened, essentially what caused the breaker to continually trip. And how to avoid that from happening again (aka not using the space heater in certain places). He even jotted which appliances use which outlets for me! Called due to the stellar reviews, but it's always hard to filter when the reviewers have no yelp friends and very few yelp reviews. As a yelp elite, I know that you always have to take things with a grain of salt.. but a strong indicator of a true review is when the person is active on this website. Anyways. Called Solomon Electrical Services since (a) I like supporting family run businesses, (b) overall pretty decent reviews - can't make everyone happy but I take the average, and (c) yelp deals are awesome! Called Monday morning. Spoke to a very kind gentleman who said he would be able to have someone come out on Tuesday afternoon. Great! He would call me back to confirm? Sure! .. later that evening.. no call. So I called back. Another nice gentleman.. who I learned was part of a messaging service company that is utilized by the company. (Ah. No wonder they were so nice). Oh this gentleman assured me that he would pass along my message immediately! Someone would absolutely call me back to confirm tomorrow's appointment.... ... later the next day. no call. So I called back again. (Three times is a charm right?) Now a nice lady, who could sense my disgruntlement, took my name, phone, address, and request for the third time... assured me someone would call right away. By this point, I'm calling baloney. Oh but I get a text. "hello this is philip with solomon electrical services we would not be able to look at your job until friday or saturday and we are booked up for the next two weeks to actually do the work" Note for the business: The objective with regards to new business is to create the impression that they are a priority. PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL THE PROSPECTIVE CLIENT BACK. I might have entertained the week later quote and even the two weeks later for service (even though it's been balls hot). But the cursory text message after (hopefully) receiving a message that I've inquired not once, not twice, but three times... shows me that you don't care about my business. So. I don't care about yours either. For those who have been serviced by Solomon, I hope that you take the time to write genuine reviews of their service and quality. I did not feel welcome to continue with this company. So we will take out business elsewhere. [Note: the review is with regards to response and intake ONLY; not of actual service. But I am inclined to believe that delays would likely occur if communication is this weak.] ***UPDATE*** I received a response with an apology from Philip, who is apparently owner of the business. Called Friday late afternoon of Labor Day weekend for a dear friend who is housebound. Spoke with a friendly woman and explained the situation of no kitchen lights and if there was anyway they could go by and check things out. Asked if they would have a crew working on Saturday and she said yes but could not guarantee they could make it. Well Saturday morning i recieved a call from one of their electricians and he was on his way to her house. Wearing a mask he went directly to the circuit box and found two breakers tripped and that was that. Then the wow factor of no charge for his time.....really! Phillip is a straight-forward, no BS, honest and hardworking guy who I would highly recommend for any electrical work in your home or business. He clearly has a breadth of experience and is well-versed in safety and building code, which is always of concern when hiring an unfamilar contractor. I had to have an additional outlet installed for a new appliance, and had two companies (Sol. E was one of them) come to give an overview of their approach and cost estimate. Phillip's main concern was to keep my condo within building code, which I later found out the other company would have broken with their approach to the modification. He arrived right on time, and when I asked if he would be done a few hours later (I had to leave for an appointment) he jokingly said "Time me, I won't be more than an hour..." Within the hour he had not only completed the work, but cleaned up the areas (drywall had been cut) and chatted with my boyfriend for a while about small business marketing. Some day I'll learn. The first time I had Solomon Electric out was just after we'd purchased our house. We wanted to install some smart light switches that could be controlled via our phones. I tried. I failed. I called Solomon and they were out the next day to fix what I'd messed up. The second time was a few weeks ago. I needed to have 6 Nest Protect smoke/carbon monoxide detectors put in, some switch timers and a Z-wave ceiling fan controller.. Thankfully I knew better than to even attempt putting the switches in and called Solomon instead. They were out the next day and had everything up and running within a few hours. Most recently, today, I tried installing a Wink Relay in place of a wall switch. Not only did I fail miserably at installing it, I also managed to blow 6 track lighting transformers and lost power to my garage. Outstanding Price and Customer Service. I found myself needing an electrician fix the overhead lighting in my kitchen. Not that big of a job, but my visually impaired father lives with me and low lighting is more difficult than no lighting at all. I utilized "Home Advisor" to request a quote and in less than five hours - my lighting issue was resolved. Phillip arrived when he promised and I was charged what I was quoted (and I want to point out that tubes shouldn't have been included - but Phillip covered the cost of the tubes. The level of customer service that Phillip provided was something that isn't seen a lot anymore. Power went out on the front part of my house and garage on Sunday morning. After resetting the fuses, the power would come back on for a little while and then went out again. As it was not an emergency, I researched electricians on Yelp, liked Solomon's reviews, and decided to call them Monday morning. I called Solomon Electric at 8:15am. They said they would be able to come by between 9:30-10am. The owner and his son, plus helper, arrived exactly at 10am. After troubleshooting the problem, which ended up being more than one issue, I have a couple new outlets and breakers, lots of great info about future upgrades, and a better understanding of the electric that is in my house. Very reasonably priced, all parts needed they had in their trucks, and they were able to come out almost immediately. Very professional, friendly, and took the extra time to ensure I understood what was done and what upgrades may be needed once the Underground project in the neighborhood is ready to connect to my property. Called this business on a Saturday morning when a chandelier installation ran into a wiring hiccup. Two hours later he was at my door and one hour later the chandelier was installed. I had an interesting home buying experience last December, and I accidentally booked two electricians on the same day! 8[ Phillip was one of them, but when he saw the other contractor, he simply left his card and asked me to call him later. I did, and he said that he had heard of the other contractor, and knew his prices were inflated. I told him what he quoted me, and sent him the home inspector's report, and Phillip said he would do it for less than 1/3 the price. He explained to me that the other electrician was attempting to sell me things I didn't need, and he presented an alternative solution that was more affordable, safe, and within code. So I booked him :) He came with his son after being easily available around my schedule, and they even fixed a problem that we didn't know we had! They were fast, friendly, thorough, and knowledgeable, so when we found ANOTHER issue (AC circuit has a break between the main house breaker and the unit breaker - no continuity) I called him immediately, unfortunately, he's about an hour late, however, I called him ten minutes ago and didn't get an answer, so my suspicion is that he's on the road and can't legally answer his phone. As long as he makes it here today, I'm fine, but that's because I'm a student and I just started my summer vacation, so I have time to hang around. I understand that people that have to take time off work to meet contractors don't have that kind of flexibility. UPDATE: about five minutes after I posted this review, he sent me a text message, apologized, and said he was on his way. When he arrived, he was able to find the problem, and another we didn't know we had (go figure) he fixed both, and everything worked perfectly and safely. As a Veteran, I always try to give my business to veteran-owned businesses.
