My brother found a lost dog wandering around our apartment complex early in the morning, he kept the dog until around 2 pm when I got out of work so I could help him take the dog to the shelter. The lady at the front desk asked us some questions but had an attitude since the start. After we handed the dog over and were literally leaving almost to our car, a lady chased after us and asked in a rude attitude, "Are you sure that's not your dog" I said no and asked why would I lie, and she responded with attitude saying, "Because people do it all the time" I understand they probably deal with difficult situations but there was no reason to treat people trying to help a lost dog like we were doing something wrong. Today my sister and I brought in a dog I found wandering around my apartment complex because we were trying to make sure it was safe and had a chance of getting back to its owner. We could've waited for animal control but instead we took time out of our own day to bring the dog in ourselves only to be met with rude attitudes and immediately made to feel like we were lying or abandoning the dog. Both of us care a lot about animals so being made to feel like we made up a story just to get rid of a dog was ridiculous. Found a newborn kitten, they euthanized because no one was available to bottle feed. I've also heard that someone I know brought in a two week kitten and the shelter dumped it in the approximate area of a field where it was found.....left it for dead or eaten by wildlife. Really? Grim Reapers for animals here. This friendly cat was abandoned behind my apartment building. I was told this shelter had vets on staff, so I MISTAKENLY believed professional eyes would assess him. I've been in this field 25 years and even founded a TNR nonprofit, so I know well the difference between a feral cat, and a timid abandoned house cat. These people apparently do NOT. They left this poor cat in a cage for a week, then chopped off his junk and his ear, and the RETURNED HIM TO THE STREETS AS A FERAL without ever bothering to work with him. On 12/28/22. We went to checkout a sweet puppy that looked like he could be a sibling to our dog at home. We fell in love instantly! He was a little bundle of energy the whole day and for like 3 straight days lol thank goodness we now how it goes after having had lots of puppies growing up. We've been training Bolt and getting him used to all the people and he's doing fantastic in our home. There was a little bit of a medical issue following the days after we adopted him, but I called the shelter and they immediately had me bring him in and prescribed him meds and acted so swiftly! I had a sad experience with a person from this place. I love animals, not just pets. I'm Brazilian and I grew up in the Amazon jungle. Since I was little, I've been rescuing injured animals in the forest with my father, so I am like a kid when I see a puppy I was always under the impression that people who work with animals are lovely and kind, but I was wrong. I went to a County Sheriff's Animal Care adoption event in Vacaville last week. The woman who attended me at this event was rude to me and I really don't understand why. I asked if I could hold a dog, she looked at the other girl who worked with her and they both said no. I kept looking at the dogs without touching them, even though other people were able to pick up the dogs. I was embarrassed and sad because I was the only one not able to hold the dogs. So less than 1 minute after I asked to get the dog and received a "NO" with an answer, another girl asked to get the same dog and they opened the cage and gave the dog to the her. I was with my boyfriend and we looked at each other wondering what was happening. Maybe they don't like people too nice. Because the only thing I did when I got to that place was talk to people with a huge smile on my face. A little annoyed, I asked Sheriff R. Gutierrez why the girl was able to hold the dog and I couldn't. She answered me: "because she is interested in adopting". So I replied: "but maybe we also have an interest in adopting". Then she replied, "but you are moving". Yes, I mentioned that we were moving to another state in August. But animals for me are part of the family and if I move, they move with me too. I don't think that's a reasonable reason why I couldn't at least hold the dog. Whatever!!! I just felt like for some reason she didn't give me the same treatment she gave other people and I didn't understand why. A little awkwardly I continued talking to her and hiding with my sunglasses a small tear that slipped from my eyes. It sounds silly, but it's not the first time I've been treated like this in this country and it probably won't be the last. I ended up holding the dog, but because the girl who was holding the dog let me take it. After all, she told me that she had no interest in adopting the dog. I left that place frustrated. They wouldn't help me with two litter of sick kittens due to the fact that I had been feeding the stray mothers for a few months. I explained they weren't my cats but that I had been feeding them since I moved here about 6 months ago and keeping an eye on the kittens since they were born about 4 weeks ago. I drove for over 2 hrs to look at a young male on their site. He had an "Act Quickly" notification above his photo. This shelter moves animals in & out quickly & there's no doubt it's because they only have a certain amount of room. I was in & out w/my new dog in 45 minutes. In that time 3 people came to surrender animals. I wouldn't blame the shelter for a short list for termination when people surrender dogs for all the wrong reasons, all day long, every day. People are the guilty ones. Shelters do what they can considering limited resources. The staff was friendly & delighted that I was taking home the little guy. I told them I would take him sight unseen & they moved quickly to execute the details. Because I'm a renter, they phoned my landlord to check adoption approval. Good! The dog handler gave me some good tips on the way out since the little one is still a wild buckeroo. "Ziggy" is adjusting very well & has a loving home until his time on earth is done. I would recommend this shelter for anyone wanting to save a life & find a wonderful companion. read more

I've fostered a couple of kittens here and recently took one home yesterday, knowing only that she had a mild URI. It turns out that she had fleas, too. When I reached out to let Solano County Animal Care to let them know, no apologies were given and I was instructed that I had to go drive there again to pick up flea medication as I gave her a bath yesterday after my discovery, which washed away the topical flea medication they treated her with only after I noticed on the paperwork that she needed a vaccine ASAP as a 9 week old. I asked if I could just purchase the treatment on my own and get reimbursed and was told quite simply no. I am disappointed with the way the shelter handled this matter. I have volunteered at another shelter and fostered many kittens, and never had such an issue. I don't typically post reviews but wanted to warn others that if they want to volunteer and specifically foster, to ensure they ask many questions about the animal they are going to foster to ensure that no such similar incident occurs. I lost a cat about a month ago, and so have been going to the Solano County Animal Care shelter about twice a week since then. They seem to treat the animals there nicely, and they have treated me well too. It is really heart-breaking to see all of these animals here. It is even more heart-breaking to read through the "DOA" book, and see all these dead animal reports. It was pretty confusing the first time I went, so I'll give this guide. When you pull up to the place, if it is a cat you are looking for, you go in the front door where the cat adoptions are first and search there until you are sure your cat is not there or better yet, until you find your cat. If it is not there, then you go into the office, which is in back, and ask anyone behind the counter for an escort to the feral barn. You will then be escorted back to a building where they hold some more cats, I'm guessing ones which are not as tame as the others. I have been hissed at in there. If you still have no luck, then you go back and ask for the found pets book and the doa book. Hopefully your cat is in the found pets book, but I've only seen a couple of additions to that book. The other book has reports of pets no longer with us. I hope you don't find anything there. If still no luck, then you put in a lost pet report. If you are looking here, it is probably too late, but all pets should be microchipped. To find your unchipped cat, after it has been lost, is a 1 in a 100 thing, seriously. Chipping it raises the odds to about 1 in 3. Well worth it. The chips are really cheap here as well, and they are inserted in about a minute. Typically people hear shelter and think "cold, lonely, depressing, cages, death, lost...". I'll admit I was one of those people until about two years ago. I started working in animal welfare and wanted to make sure any recommendations I offered were well informed. I started making connections and some of them were at our local shelter. I now count those connections among my dear friends and can tell you with absolute certainty: this is not most shelters. They are adoption guaranteed, that means no adoptable animal is euthanized to make space. Friendly animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome here with open arms. Not only does the staff lavish the residents with attention but they work with so many rescues that they run out of adoptable animals from time to time. Their Cattery is warm and inviting. The walls are painted to comfort the animals and they have three recreation rooms full of toys and sun for resident tummies. Their kennel is clean, full of soft beds, and they have multiple play yards for exercise. Let's not forget their foster program. I count myself among their outstanding fosters. From bottle feeders to those who help with socialization. Last, but absolutely not least is the kindest staff I have ever met. The day we arrived at the animal shelter all the smaller dogs had already been adopted. So unfortunately we didn't get a chance to see them or adopt them. The staff mentioned that the small dogs tend to get adopted pretty quickly. Which I'm sure is true for all other animal shelters as well. I loved the little dog quotes they had hanging in front of each of the kennels. Having recently lost my dog it was really emotional to see and it also made my heart smile. Went because I seen on the website they had a rabbit for adoption, I get there do the application the lady tells me to go inside a building because she thinks that's where they keep the small animals. Which is fine, but it was close to the time they close for lunch break. So I waited almost 10 min then I walk back outside to ask why no one has come, a lady from another door asks if I was the one wanting to see the rabbit I said yes. We go inside she says "it's right here" and walks off. She was gone for a good 15min, comes back and opens the door and says "we are closed" I asked what if we wanted to adopt it? She said "well you have to come back" so I at least tried to ask if she knew anything about it seeing as to how they take care of these animals everyday while they are there. She said "it's friendly I don't know what else you want me to tell you, I'm not the one that takes care of it, if you want to adopt it come back when we open again" and closed the door. read more

I was impelled by Sergeant Michael Harrison and Crystal (office supervisor) to write this review. HORRENDOUS customer service. Higher ups should absolutely consider restaffing the office. Mrs. Crystal is useless and Mr. Harrison is condescending. Instead of being sensitive to my situation they were complete assholes. Instead of being helpful they just added stress to my incredibly stressful situation. They would better serve the jail next door. I talked to Crystals supervisor, Cathy Ramos to explain my experience. She was a bit snippy with me. I asked for her supervisor, Angelica Russel. She informed me that she and a few others are new to the animal division. I don't know why. Maybe to let me know that something will be done when she gets settled into her position. This is not just an office job. They work in a field where compassion plays a huge role. According to all the other reviews they have none. I really hope they get their stuff together, I don't think they can afford anymore bad reviews. read more

This place is awful, they kill perfectly healthy cats if you don't have the money to take them back to the colony, I am in the process to fix ( spay /neuter ) them I have appointments set up for the surgery , I even offered to send the emails with the appt for them to know that I was in the process , and they didn't care anyways . I explained that to someone ( not nice at all) on the phone ,and she told me to contact Lieutenant Ramos who I suppose to beg for those poor cats lives. Everything here is about the money , they are not there to help animals just for the money. Heartless people at the front desk. I couldn't believe the comments about rudeness until I experienced it myself. I was yelled at over the phone for asking a legitimate question. I adopted her last month, and unfortunately had to return the dog due to a situation with my dog walker. I felt that I was very poorly informed about the dog and did not even get to see her paperwork, which when I called several days later the adoption coordinator asked me didn't you see her paperwork. It was heartbreaking to return the dog, but it was what I had to do. They have a 30 day waiting period to adopt again. I called to ask if I may adopt on the 30th day, or if it has to be after 30 days. The young woman on the phone yelled at me several times that it had to be x date, which was 3 days after the 30 days. She refused to answer my question. There was no need to yell at me, it was completely uncalled for. Also, the 30 day waiting period--this was not really my fault. The longer the dogs are in the shelter the more stressful it is for them. Wouldn't you want to get a dog adopted? I am not impulsive or irresponsible, I am a 52 year old physician. read more

Witnessed an alteration today. Several of us were waiting to see a particularly popular dog. It was 102 outside and we all waited to see the dog while another potential owner was inside. Well she ended up adopting him and a man that claims he was there first was very upset to the point he wanted to physically hurt the people adopting the dog. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was asked to leave. This was my first time ever visiting a shelter and I will not be coming back here again. It seems a bit disorganized with no check in by appointment only. This was more first come first serve and the whole experience was not what I was expecting. I'm giving this shelter 5 stars in hopes that more people will come here to rescue a dog! (I can only speak for the adoption process and the dog ward). Unlike some other reviewers, I had a positive experience during the adoption process. I showed up to the shelter right before they opened, and the staff and police officer were extremely nice. Regardless of whatever experience you think you may have with the staff, based on other reviews, don't let it discourage you from coming here. Please still consider adopting a dog here. It's all about rescuing an animal in need! I'm sure due to lack of funding, this particular shelter contains one dog ward which is, well, let's just say, not the greatest (in my opinion). I'm trying to put it nicely. However, I'm sure they do the best with what they have. I just feel so incredibly sorry for the dogs that end up here, and that's why I came a second time to try again, to find a dog. The first visit was really overwhelming, but luckily, the second visit was a success. I instantly fell in love with a dog I had initially found on pet harbor. Honestly, the adoption process was very easy and the staff, and also the officer I met there, were all very nice. The dog I had adopted had been neutered the day before. They sent me home with his pain meds. I took him to my vet the following day and we found out he had a fever and a respiratory infection. He's on antibiotics and is doing very well. I'm so happy he's safe and comfortable, and I'm so very lucky to have him! Please adopt here! I will definitely keep coming back to rescue more! read more

We came to look at dogs, they had a lot of nice looking dogs to adopt. But, more than that was the level of compassion each employee we talked to had for these animals. We adopted a 2 year old hound/pit bull mix and he's the sweetest thing we could ever ask for. They allowed our other dog to meet him before we adopted him to make sure he was compatible. Retrieving our horses proved more challenging than anticipated, and at least -five- staff members skipped their lunch to help us out! I adopted my dog on 01/05/16. The people in the front office were very kind and I got my paperwork. My concern is that my dog came in on 12/22 but wasn't vaccinated until 12/31 and was spayed on 01/04. She became very ill with a LAKE of mucus coming from both nostrils tinged with blood. Initially I thought the blood was from being spayed per the animal tech that I spoke to. I spent $500.00 plus in emergency care for my dog and she is worth every penny. I hope many more decide to rescue 4 legged companions from shelters and rescue organizations. read more

We adopted our cat Atreyu from here who we renamed Ninja because it suited him better with all his ninja kitty skills, when we first adopted him he had an infection from his neutering, but they gave him the antibiotics he needed to get better free of charge so that was nice. After a few more weeks of having him we realized he had a tape worm, which we had to take him in to get better. The process of adopting here I found very easy and we love our little ninja as he has been the best kitty for our family. I do suggest taking your newly adopted pet to a vet to check them out after adopting since they do give you a free voucher on your first vet visit just to check out and make sure everything is ok, since they're are a lot of animals that need adopting here and they are quite full, you never know which ones could have an infection or need a little extra care. read more

They gave me a tax deductible receipt and were thankful I placed some new dog toys on top of the bags. It was great to see staff/volunteers(?)outside walking happy pit bulls and playing with toys on the front lawns. But it was SO depressing to see cold hearted people in line dropping off their cats and leaving. One guy said he had a cat for 10 years and was dumping it. However, the staff were very understanding and willing to help them which was nice to observe. I hope this place can work towards matching their sheltered pets to more rescues, thus every unwanted pet there can avoid being euthanized. read more

I was in to adopt a dog today that I had seen on the website the night before. I was there when they opened. I inquired in the office about the dog and they had no record of her. Went to look at the available dogs anyway and all they had were pits. Spoke to a couple of women that worked around the dogs and they said she was taken by the Dog spot in Vacaville on the 1st. The only way to see the dog spot's animals is to drive to Elk Grove. Went back to the office and talked to the women in there and they were kinda rude. I only went in because of the web site. The adoption fee for the shelter is $95. And the dog spot is $375. I asked if they could get the dog back and told them about the money difference and they made excuses for the dog spot, having to spay or neuter (already done) vaccines (already done). I left there and will never return. Nicole was the worst as far as rudeness She didn't really want to give me the time of day. read more

Firstly I'd like to say the staff here are extremely rude and unprofessional. I had been called a B**** because I had asked for help after waiting around 10 minutes with no one showing up and helping me to get my dog since he had went to the pound that same day. Then the staff member was telling the other employees (I was in the hallway so I was able to hear clearly and they were in the adoption center) about my situation with my dog and how I'm a bad owner and shouldn't be able to look at the adaptable dogs because my dog had gotten lost and he ended up here in the pound, and that I'm not capable of taking care of dogs. I found it extremely unprofessional and disrespectful to talk about a customer so immorally to other employees when having no knowledge about that customer and situation. Overall this experience made me extremely uncomfortable and I don't want to go back at all. However it seemed like they had taken good care of him as far as bedding and shelter goes but the the first time he had gone to the pound he went running to his water and food and drank as if he hadn't drank at all and ate all of his canned food (normally only eats half.) so that made me question if they were even providing him with food and water. Overall it looks like they take decent care of the animals but the staff definitely needs improvement. read more
