When you have more reservations after you sit down at your table than you had to hold the table, you know there's trouble coming.
Good Hells. Where to start. I envision Gordon Ramsay doing a Kitchen Nightmares at "Sol Grill Room & Lounge" (what on Earth is a 'grill room' ??!??!) and confiding to the camera, "Sol ? More like SOLd OUT".
Because we sit down to our 7:30pm reso, and begin to order. Now, our server is nice and apologetic to no end - "We were very busy today" - but as we order we get the impressive list of 86'd items. "We have no buns for our burgers," (half the menu gone) "there's no meatballs left" (for the kids-meal spaghetti).
Bear in mind Sol is open for breakfast 0700-1100 then for dinner 5pm to 9pm except Mon/Tues. We're in on a Wednesday. 90 mins into their first dinner service of the week with maybe 4 tables in play (tail end of COVIDia). Yes they do takeout, but you know for how many covers you're booked for the night (it is by-reso-only dining) !
Ordering process is terrible. Nice server is using a POS tablet running Win 3.1.1 apparently, because our orders have to be in a very slow and specific order. Alcohol. Then kids drinks. Then kids meals. Then entrees. DO NOT DEVIATE.
Then the food. One adult gets his Buffalo Wings (with no dip, celery, carrots) at the same time as the meal. Additionals eventually come (baby carrots, not sticks - blasphemy!) He was charged $6.99 for the prawns that were included in his dish; his kids' drinks charged when included in the meal.
Half the table gets their food (the half that ordered second) and we get ours as they're nearly done. Wife's "sangria" was wine spritzer. My $24.99 salmon was undercooked; "mashed potatoes" were grainy (think shredded kohlrabi texture) and prepackaged. Floor manager (?) claimed the fish was "perfect medium rare" (no - gummy and cold in the center) in a snide tone as he disappeared with it.
Wife's "Ham & Swiss chicken" was salty, and just a thin chicken breast with a slab of ham (5/8") under a layer of white cheese (think she hit a 'knot' or two in the ham). The croutons on her caesar salad were clearly garlic-bread crusts recently repurposed.
The fish & chips fish and the chicken tenders were indistinguishable from each other; both deep-fried and 'hammered' past belief.
The wine menu, Sol being in the south end of B.C. and Canada's premier wine-growing region, lists ~8 white and ~8 red wines... only TWO of each available by the glass - all others by the bottle only.
We'd split the bill so my family's half got the kids' spaghetti and my salmon pulled from the check (I am hopeful the salmon was humanely returned to the lake) but our friends paid $130 before tip for VERY unsatisfying food.
Absolutely do not recommend Sol. Great view, so-so atmosphere (upscale Denny's with fewer menu options), dreadful food. Massive disappointment. read more
