I made a reservation online through Open Table. When we arrived at the restaurant, the girl in front couldn't find our reservation, even though I showed her my confirmation email. We were then seated. For almost 20 mins, no one came to check on us or even give us a menu. Finally, we asked for the manager. We waited another 5 mins before someone came over to check on us. At this point my wife told the person in Spanish how ridiculous it was that we had not even gotten a menu. They didn't seem to care at all, so we left. We went to Sol de Mexico on a Saturday night. We wondered why they weren't very busy. After we ordered we discovered the reason for the lack of business. We ordered two steak dishes and one salad and guacamole. The guacamole came and it was really good. The waitress forgot our salad and brought us two almost raw steaks. We ordered them medium rare. Worst service I've ever had anywhere. Cute atmosphere. Really delicious food. But my bf and I were there for 2 hours because nobody waited on us the entire time we were there. The host jumped in and basically took over as our server. We didn't get our first drink until 30 minutes in. Appetizer 45 minutes in. Entree 1 hour in. Had to ask for our check 3 times and finally left after 2 hours of no service. My bf was adamant on no tip since we had no server, no one checked up on us and we had to ask several times for what we needed. We were charged $100 for 2 drinks each, guac, and our entrees. Normally, I would have vouched for the food and atmosphere but to be expected to pay $100 after such horrible service with no attempt at compensation, was like a slap in the face after being annoyed and upset for 2 hours. I heard many good things about this restaurant so I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. First of all, the location isn't the greatest, but we decided to try it anyway. My fiance had the Mahi Mahi special and I had a vegetarian dish. While we waited, we ordered chips and salsa which wasn't free like in most Mexican restaurants. This was a little disappointing too. Finally, when our meal arrived it was barely enough to feed a chihuahua! It top things off the meal ended up costing over $40. That's too much for a special and a vegetarian dish and chips and salsa. I have been to this restaurant a few times already and went here again for our anniversary. We go here when we want great upscale mexican food. Again, not you typical mexican food. No burritos here. You will get moles and great soups and appetizers. The menu does change regularly also. We saw that they had the sopa azteca back on the menu and we just love that soup. It was awesome again. Their sopas surtidos are also very good. Everything here is fresh and made in house. For our entree we ordered the special. The mocajeta surtido. It was a big stone bowl filled with various meats, cheese and cactus. It came with never ending tortillas (again made in house daily) that you use to make tacos. It was pretty good and was more than enough for two people and only cost $18. A real bargain. For dessert we ordered the molten chocolate cake with ice cream (warning: this dessert takes almost 25 mins for them to make. Again, made fresh to order). It was pretty good also. The chocolate was very rich. It was kind of small but more than enough for the two of us after eating so much. Overall this experience was not my favorite of all the times that I have been here. But it was consistantly good. The five stars is based on all my experiences here. I would have given this one time 4 stars. Sol de Mexico is probably one of the top 5 - 10 best mexican restaurants in the city. And it is not downtown. You can actually find free street parking! Another insider tip: order their horchata. It is hands down the best I have had. And trust me I have had a lot. It's not on their menu but just ask. This place is a little pricey, average price per entree this time was $20. Avg. price per appetizer was $7. Our total bill was $57 +10 tip = $67. But again, we would have spent more if we didn't order the special which was a great deal. read more

yelp doesn't lie. that's for sure. thank you for helping me find my new favorite mexican restaurant in the city. it was the coldest night yet this year, but this place was warm and lovely. the atmosphere is great. it's on a busy stretch of cicero, but you feel like you're really in a neighborhood. love the fact that it's across from a greek wholesale meat place. will have to check that out soon too. the wine and margaritas are great. nice pours and really good service. our waitress was adorable and really great with recommendations. i think you could order anything here though and come away happy. it definitely does not seem like the place you go and order the same thing always. best to try everything. i suggest the app sampler. very good and you get to try so many things. i think it's like $7 per person. totally worth it. the mole here is sublime. i tried the lamb with black mole and the duck with red mole. omg. so good. the carne asada was also delicious. the black beans super out of this world. we had tons of food leftover that went into making a darned good breakfast--totally makes the price seem that much more worth it. go. be impressed. read more

The food was good, but nothing amazing. The real issue was the service. They were understaffed during our visit and we didn't receive water for at least 15 mins. The server had to make all the cocktails. The server and the busser just weren't working fast or smart enough. This kind of service is typical and expected at a run of the mill ethnic restaurant. This place is perfect for dates, families, friends, even those with small kids. We moved in down the street and passed by - noticing the "Zagat" rating and got hungry and curious. We walked in on a Friday night and were seated in an empty room (it was 5pm) decorated with an authentic look and feel of the restaurants we've visited in Mexico. We ordered drinks - Mojito and a Grapefruit and Tequila drink for him - it was the first of many rounds. We ordered appetizers of shrimp cocktail (almost a ceviche) and masa boats with different fillings and moles - so so good. Then for our dinners we had tampiquena and carne asade which were some fo the best. We didn't get to dessert as we were full, but I saw the list and it looked wonderful. The best part of the whole visit was the service. The waiters, servers, bus people, host, and the owner/manager all were great. They were polite, attentive, answered questions, checked in, and lastly the owner came over to talk to us too. We'll be back and we're telling everyone we know who would make the trip up. Not too expensive either - Drinks were about 6 each (vs Wicker Park $10 ones) Guac was 6, dinner for two total was $100 with tip - well worth it. read more

It's been a few years since we last ate at this restaurant and after eating there again I was not disappointed. The food was as delicious as I last remembered, actually it was even better then I remembered! We ordered a sample appetizer which was very delicious especially the ceviche w/cactus (something I would have never ordered) was very good. We also had enchiladas w/the mole sauce which was the BEST mole I ever tasted. My husband ordered the vegetarian enchilada which was good but the two dishes that I ordered left me wanting more! I ordered a duck dish w/green mole sauce which just melted in my mouth and a seafood dish w/rice which was very very delicious. You could taste the freshness of the seafood and the work that has been put into making the dish, it smelled and tasted mouth-watering. We ended our dinner with an ice cream w/a chocolate cake served in a tamale which was very simple but it just blew me away. I left the restaurant very content and satisfied. Not in the trendy neighborhoods (Lincoln Park, Bucktown, etc..) but it's nice to not have to deal with the crowds and lack of parking. My husband and I had an amazing dinner there! The taste and attention to detail are superb. Great and warm service.The Sopes appetizer was delicious and fresh. Their Mole is the perfect balance of sweet and salty. They have a nice range of drinks too. The drink "La Cura de Juan" is a mexican version of a white russian and it's great. We had a fantastic dinner at Sol De Mexico. We started with the guacamole & chips as well as the sopes. The guacamole was really good, and the sopes were excellent - my two favorites were the one with the sweet plantains and the one with chicken in red mole. Very filling, so we split them all (we probably should have only gotten one appetizer). I ordered the scallops in Poblano sauce for my main dish, and they were cooked perfectly. It came with grilled zucchini and mashed potatoes. I was surprised by the small amount of zucchini (I wanted more at first). But then I tried the mashed potatoes (a very generous portion) and was blown away. I usually don't like mashed potatoes, but these were amazing. My husband ordered the molcajete, which was enormous. He thought the meat and seafood were perfectly grilled and ate every last bite. For dessert, he had the coconut pie, which was warm and topped with vanilla ice cream. Again, he was impressed and ate the whole thing. We will definitely go back. They said that they change the menu every 3 months, and will be changing it next week. We can't wait to try the next menu. Sol de Mexico is an obscure little restaurant located in an obscure little part of Chicago, and yet has been in Michelin's Bib Gourmand list for the past few years. That speaks for itself. The food is absolutely amazing. The highlights are definitely their mole sauces. I had the lamb in black mole sauce and my wife had the tamales in green mole sauce. Both the dishes were fantastic. The butternut squash soup was to die far too, and their drinks were amazing. All-in-all, great little place for some good Mexican food at very decent prices. read more

The best Mexican food I think I have ever eaten! The Moles were to die for! Everything that my friend and I had was very flavorful and beautifully presented. I am a meat eater and my friend is not. So we had mostly vegetarian items to share and i did not miss having meat it was that good. Wait staff were very attentive and friendly as well. The decor was cozy and really lovely. The food was good but the service was poor and that brought the overall experience of Sol down to just OK. Some of our meal that we ordered came out completely wrong and most of the food was just luke-warm (the pumpkin soup was just plain cold). The food was delivered by the bus boys and our waitress never showed nor did the round of drinks we ordered. The Guacamole was good but the portion skimpy as was the rack of lamb, though it was delicious, especially the mole sauce and the potatoes that accompanied it. I will probably go back because the food was good and give the service a second try. This is the best restaurant in the area. It's rare that I go out for Mexican, and when I do it's usually the local burrito joints. I wanted to try this place for a long time, and when I finally had the opportunity, I was more than impressed. I read the reviews before going, and it was still better than I expected. What a lovely little surprise! A friend recommended it for one of our monthly dinners, and we all loved it. I ordered the warm lobster salad with spinach and garden strawberries - fantastic. Another friend ordered one of the evening's specials - a porkchop with poblano sauce and rustic potatoes - I'm a vegetarian but, damn, that looked good. The drink menu, in addition to beer and wine, is extensive and pretty creative, evenly split between margs and martinis. We all split the pecan bars with vanilla ice cream for dessert - sinful. All their desserts are homemade and they clearly take pride in that. The ambiance was relaxed, the staff were friendly and very attentive, and the food...need I say more? I have been to Sol de Mexico on two occasions now and love it. It is some of the best Mexican food I've had in Chicago, or anywhere else, for that matter. It is super fresh. The homemade tortillas are delicious. The menu is large and varies from the super-common Mexican dishes. Both times that I have gone, I've had the specials with the red mole. I think about that mole sauce for about a week after, wondering how soon I can go back. Service and drinks are also great. It's authentic, fresh and delicious. Wish it were closer to my house. But it's definitely worth taking the trip. read more

this is a great restaurant, I love the food, drinks are great. I have been there twice. second time I went there for a special occasion there was a group of ten we all had drinks and ordered appetizer and all got meals. one thing that did bother me was that when it was time to pay I noticed that they had charged us for some salsa that we asked for our steak. I also brought a cake for the special occasion and waitress asked me if I wanted them to cut the cake for me and I said yes.. but to my surprise they also charged me for that. I honestly thought they were being nice. they never informed me that there was a charge for that. so that kind of disappoint me. I have been to some very expensive restaurants and never been charged for extra sauce. otherwise food, drinks, are great. read more
