Sol Azteca is one of my favorite restaurants in the Olney area! They have really good food and their menu is pretty extensive. I've probably been here at least ten times (haha) and have always had a good experience. Their food is consistently delicious, drinks are pretty strong and good, and the staff is overall friendly and knowledgeable. This place is great for meeting up with friends/family, small-big groups, and happy hour! I'd definitely recommend their house margarita, any quesadilla, as well as the lomo saltado. Food was okay. Salad was very large, enough for two people to share, and at 10.00 a plate that would be smart. Trout was not defined but was drowning in the white cheese sauce and shrimp on top. Taste good, but badly presented and the bones were unpleasant to have to won't out. Service was good, attentive. Boy OMG THE ACCOUSTICS ARE HORRIBLE! The noise is very loud from other tables. We were disappointed by the quality of food and the fact that happy hour ends at 6. We came here on a Monday and the restaurant was very understaffed. Our waitress served our table and another at the same time 50/50 (as in, half our food and half theirs, then the remaining half for each table on the subsequent visit.). We also had to ask for more water, chips etc, each time we needed it. The margarita was tasty and surprisingly strong! I was just bummed we missed HH because it was $40 for a pitcher. I'm not sure if that's the going rate around here but seems steep. The food was just very meh. It came out in pieces (my fajita meat came out 5min before my tortillas and fillings, my wife's french fries came out first even though she ordered them to come under her steak - a California thing supposedly!). The food was mediocre and my stomach was very sensitive the next day. Definitely go for HH before 6! That margarita was tough and tasty! read more

I have previously gave a review about this place and I completely still feel the same about it. However my last visit wasn't the best one because the miscommunication between the staff and myself as a customer was definitely not the best. The waiter failed to notify us about the "special drink" we had ordered in a pitcher form that they only use top shelf liquor for it (only way it can be done apparently )and because of that the pitcher was costing us $75. Which in my opinion is a very high price for a pitcher that is mainly ice. The manager did come out and try to rectify the situation but I don't think he fully comprehended the point that his staff did not notify us of any price changes for that specific pitcher. It truly rubbed me the wrong way that he tried to make it seem like money was the issue when it was not. Specially because a week prior I had been there and ordered the same thing and I definitely did not pay that amount. I hope staff is better trained and let customers know about price changes and not get surprised when they receive the bill. read more

Not only was the food below par, but the service just made my experience so much worse! So I'll start with the food. I ordered the yuca con chicharron as a starter. It was okay, prob the best thing I tried out of everything I tried. However, I still prefer when restaurants serve it with some kind of sauce. I was dipping my meat into the salsa dip. For my entree, I got the bistec a la criolla. It was horrible. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well. The sauce tasted more like an asian sauce. And to top it off, there were no beans or veggies other than the onions. I also tried my friend's chicken for the fajitas. It tasted like some chicken you get out of a TV dinner. My other friend ordered the lomo saltado, and the meat was chewy and the sauce was just off. Even the fried plantains weren't that great... not fried/greasy enough. So that is the food... but then our waitress wasn't very good. She was nice, but she just didn't get things right... we asked for the food to come out all at once but she didn't do it... then we asked for our first round of shots to come chilled, but she messed that up too... then my friend had to leave early and gave $25 towards the bill. When we paid at the end, the waitress didn't remove it. I didn't notice until I got home because we just split the bill between our party. We didn't look to see if specific items were removed, too many people... What am I supposed to do now? Go back and tell them you owe me $25 dollars? I don't even know how I could go explain/prove that. Also, two of my friends got a pitcher of margarita-- the pitcher is tiiiiny! It was a fake me out pitcher. Then, to top it off, 9 patron shots cost me $96.50. Who do these people think they are?! Shot aren't even that expensive in DC! This is one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life. The only positive I can mention about this restaurant is that the waitress was nice. She may have messed a couple things up, but it wasn't on purpose. I've lived in the area for years. A fellow yelper and I were deciding on where to go for dinner a few weeks ago. He points to Sol Azteca and asked me how many times I've eaten there. And based on the number I said ("a few times"), we decided on someplace else. (Because if I've lived in the area for years and I've only been there a few times, it's probably just okay, right? That was the reasoning.) Afterwards, I wondered to myself: WHY didn't I go to Sol Azteca more often? It's literally minutes from me and the food has always been good... It's like the stars aligned, because a couple weeks ago, my sisters suggested we meet there for dinner and margaritas. YES PLEASE. They both ordered the steak fajitas, which is usually what I order. This time, I ordered the Pollo Saltado. My dish was pretty good, but not the best Saltado I've ever had (Uh... Sardi's Lomo Saltado!)... the sauce was a little too watery and tomato-y. BUT THEIR FAJITAS THOUGH. Of course I picked off their plates... the steak was soooo tender. Mmmm. Portions are large... none of us could finish our food. After our meals, I wanted something sweet (salt overload... I ate so many chips...). So we ordered a Cajeta -- a large scoop of vanilla ice cream coated with toasted coconut, nuts and topped with cajeta (caramel sauce) -- to share. oh em gee. I probably ate more than half of it. The enchiladas, particularly the shredded beef, are wrapped in corn tortillas, and are fabulous. Sangria packs a punch, and is delicious. Friendly service. Nice atmosphere. Hmmm...when the hubster and I tasted the chips ~ we knew it would not be the best Mexican food...but we were hopeful! I ordered steak fajitas and requested the steak well done. It looked and smelled great when it came to the table. I filled a fajita shell with all the "works", BUT when I started to eat it I couldn't bite into the fajita shell!! The fajita shells had clearly been warmed in a microwave oven vs made fresh. Store bought flour tortillas lose moisture over time and become dry or stiff if improperly heated. When I confronted our waiter his response confirmed I was right. He did bring me new ones, but sadly they were the same microwave disaster. The steak was med~rare and honestly had a bad taste to it so I did not eat it. I hadn't said anything about the food, but when our friend ask if he could taste the steak he replied, "didn't you ask for it to be well done? That's med~rare at best." When the bill came I handed our waiter my plate and explained the steak wasn't done and the fajitas were once again inedible. He CLEARLY either didn't care or did not understand english! The supposedly clean dishes that they were giving us were all dirty. I ordered a margarita that had a dead cockroach on the glass and my sister ordered same but her glass was just dirty looked as if not washed. As we are complaining to the waitress she is handing us little plates for the table we noticed the plates she was handing to us were dirty as well had food crumbs on it. Just want to add something else that was unprofessional as well. There was 2 piña coladas ordered one virgin and one with alcohol. The waitress gives them out and says "ok this is the virgin one and the one with alcohol" she was WRONG. Our point is that what if it was a kid or someone under 21 that you just gave that alcoholic drink to and you said it was the virgin one. read more

The pitcher margaritas are priced at a very reasonable price. The food is also great! The steak fajitas are amazing!

Plenty of parking, the place is somewhat big inside. The waiters were nice. They give complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was a bit more in liquid form rather than somewhat creamy/chunky. They have tons of options on their menu which makes it hard to select what to eat. My friends and I have selected the guac and chips as appetizer and lobster and scallop enchiladas to eat. The guac and chips came out quick... I wasn't too much of a fan. It was tasteless to me. It wasn't too long of wait until my lobster and scallop enchilada dish came. It came with rice, cheese, pinto beans, sour cream, tomato on the side. It was super creamy, buttery - taste better when paired with the rice to mask the super buttery part. Its definitely a super heavy meal (aka super fattening) for me. I tried my friends black beans, also flat/flavorless. The side dishes were super plain. I don't know how anyone can say this place is good. The food is gross and the service is HORRIBLE! Not to mention it's not clean. My husband and I went to give it one last try hoping it would be good and it was worse than the last time. I'll start with the service. It seemed as if there was one waiter for our whole side of the restaurant, not section restaurant! And she wasn't sorry about it. When I order a pitcher of margaritas I would like it in a reasonable amount of time. Because I can't chug all of that fast. Well our pitcher didn't get to us until about half an hour into ordering. I would understand if they made it homemade and it tasted amazing, but no I watched them pour pre-made margaritas into our pitcher, they didnt even pretend like they were making it. I then asked if she would make carne asada French fries which most non west coast mexican restaurants cannot do and that's fine, but don't pretend like you know what I am talking about and then come out wIth a side of fries and dry meat. Soooo disappointing! And not worth it at alll! People say the chips and salsa are amazing? How? It's literally tomato juice and chunks of tomatoes nothing special at all. Amazing food, excellent service since they first opened. I have eaten a bit of everything on the menu over the years. Appetizers would recommend the taquitos or ceviche! Lunch/dinner would recommend the Tijuana platter, mixed fajitas, lomo saltado, salmon a la parilla or Mariscada Siete Mares soup!!! The servers are always checking up on you, but not to the point of making you feel like they hover or rushing you. Your glass of water will never be empty for too long!! Music is great! Drinks are always good especially the mango margaritas! Parking is a bit tricky to find as it is located in Olney by the Harris Teeter & other shops. Happy hour is always happy!! Weekday is less crowded & weekend is a bit busy with your usual 20-40 min wait. Although for food like this, definitely worth it!!! read more

I love Sol Azteca! My small town is redeemed by some awesome food, and this is one of the best Mexican/Latin American restaurants I've ever eaten in . The salsa is great - appropriately spiced and properly addictive. The margaritas are really good, and you can get Negra Modelo here as well as its lighter "Especial" version, which is cool because it's my favorite Mexican beer. As far as food goes, I always, always get the carne asada. It's so good, really nicely seasoned, with an unremarkable but useful side of guacamole and some bright yellow rice that kind of scares me but it still tastes pretty good. I don't eat much of it anyway so I figure it won't kill me. Do you understand the Mexican restaurant rice that has the equivalent of, like, Birdseye mixed peas and carrots in it? Because I sure don't...people! No weird frozen veggies! The service is lovely - always attentive and the waiters (one woman waits tables here that I've seen...and she always seems harried yet officious and helpful) are sweet. The bar is cozy and a nice spot to grab some food whether or not there's a table. Sports is the thing, here - lots of soccer and whatever American sport is in season. I love this place. Were I around more I'd probably eat her weekly. It gets five stars in spite of the average restaurant flaws because it makes me happy to be here - and that's worth countless stars, yes? BORING!! Basically, dumbed-down Betty Crocker versions of Mexican food. Not even tourist-grade, because at least at a typical Tex-Mex place you can get more than one kind of beans! Black beans and white rice (!) that could have come from a Chinese restaurant. Those, ladies and gentlemen, are your bean and rice choices at this "authentic" Tex-Mex restaurant. Hmmm, what shall we have? Let's start with the bland, runny Velveeta-inspired queso dip, then slog through the tasteless, plain chicken bits baked in corneal that they laughingly call a tamale. I got excited when my Cuban pork arrived, but it was a false alarm. They had accidentally spilled some spices into a dish of boiled pork that could have been served in Iowa. To be fair, the fried plantains were very good, but on a par with every Peruvian chicken place in the area. Not a reason to go here. The staff is less than impressive. When I asked for salsa verde (oddly lacking on the tamales), a waitress brought me a mouth-destroying bottle of habañero sauce. They have never HEARD of salsa verde. Really? What part of Texas are they from - Michigan? The horrible recipes are executed - and I use that word deliberately - perfectly, which is a shame.. When I complained about the blandness, I got a shrug from the waitress. Apparently, people in Olney LOVE this place. The manager had the nerve to tell me this was real Tex-Mex food. This is a very good Mexican restaurant with a very large menu. I ordered a carnitas dish served with orange peel upon my first visit last cinco de mayo. It was a very tasty dish. My wife ordered the chicken and steak fajitas. Very large portion and the steak was very good.... we both preferred the steak over the chicken but they are your classic mexican style fajitas.... a staple at any mexican restaurant. On our second visit, I ordered a salmon dish that came with a very rich seafood sauce. It was very good and was served with shrimp and scallops. My wife had..... take a guess...... steak fajitas! I've been eating at this place for years! Everything about this place is great. The size is larger than average than most Mexican restaurants. I never feel crowded or stuffy. The food is very good. Their salsa and chips are perfect. The chips always come out warm and crispy. The salsa is chunky and fresh. Margaritas are always a Mexican staple, however their Mojitos are worth a try as well. I usually oder the Salmon cooked in the Cancun sauce, but their fajitas always smell and taste so good. A must try in Olney! read more
