The price and location bumped this up to four stars. My husband and I have stayed here twice now…read moreand have been happy. Parliament, museums, and the canal are an easy walk away, and the main street that the inn sits off of (Elgin Street) is full of restaurants and shops so you don't have to go far for a bite to eat (we liked the Elgin Street Diner the best). The inn's breakfast is nice with lots of choices, (including Nutella!), and I liked that the front door is kept locked at all times. There are some drawbacks, like having to share a bathroom and sleeping on a mattress that was a little uncomfortable. I ended up bringing my own pillow since we drove quite a ways to get there, and I think my husband regretted not doing the same. The floors do squeak quite a bit, but I didn't mind this since I like staying in old houses with lots of character. And I was so tired from walking around all day that I conked out in about two minutes after getting back to the room. Overall, a great place to stay if you'll be out exploring all day and want an affordable and nearby place to crash at night.

Any decision to stay at the Rideau Inn should be based solely on the price and location. At a…read moreweekend rate of $70/night and an easy walk from Parliament Hill, the inn is an easy and affordable launch pad to view the city. The inn would be better characterized as a hostel. The downsides are the rooms are very close together. If you stay on the first or second levels, you will hear your neighbors creaking on the wooden floors overhead. The bed we stayed in was lumpy and in need of replacement. The sheets also had a warped feeling from being excessively washed (probably for several years). Part of our room was dusty/dirty, one of our two lights was not functioning properly and our clock was not set. There is a glass window above many room doors, which cause the bedrooms to be flooded with hallway light. Our suite was small, without sufficient space to store our belongings. Several rooms do not contain their own bathrooms. No toiletries will be provided. An attendant is not on-site for most of the day and the evening hours. The self-serve continental breakfast consists of cereal, fruit and croissants. If you are looking for a bargain in a good location, the Rideau Inn is it. However, if you are in search of a romantic bed and breakfast getaway, or a place for comfort and relaxation, you should look for other accommodation.

I didn't mind them. The bed was comfortable and the decor is quaint. Breakfast was good. I had the French toast and my boyfriend had the omelet. It came with fruit salad, drinks and cheese. Pierre, the owner, is an amicable person who recommended a lot of places to visit and is the reason my boyfriend came back from his previous experience here and brought me along this time. Overall, it was an enjoyable place and I had good experience here.

There is a numeric lock on the door - clearly the only way in is if you know the code. A sheet of paper is taped to the door window. On it is printed "Please Call" followed by two phone numbers. Those two phone numbers are crossed out and a third number is handwritten in. While we were figuring out what to do, an older, shabbily-dressed man came up to the door, punched a code into the lock, and opened the door. He allowed us in, then wandered down the hall, stopping only to speak to someone in a room farther down. The hallway is very narrow and the place felt like a halfway house. Based on the apparent size of the building, I could not see how the rooms could possibly be as nice as was advertised. Another person approached from down the hall. He did not introduce himself, but appeared to be the proprietor. He sat at a very small deck in a tiny nook off the hallway and brought out some paperwork for us to fill out. We did not feel safe at all. We apologized, cancelled, and left as quickly as we could to find another place to stay for the weekend. He charged me a $50 cancellation fee.

Upon walking to the door I was swarmed by unkept, older men. Just STARING at me from inside. I buzzed beforehand to check in and nothing happened other than being stared at. This made me incredibly fearful of my life. Upon trying to run away, I collapse. Thank god my male friend was with me. He told the 4 men standing there to go away. Did I mention the office was completely empty. No safety. None. No thanks. I'm not paying or allowing my landlord to pay for me to stay in a place that is unsafe. Upon getting in my friend's vehicle I called the landlord of my place that was being fixed (waking him up) he was furious that I woke him thinking that it's just some regular bed and breakfast. I informed him I didn't feel safe while crying and had to tell him over and over again that there was no way I was going to allow a possible assault and lack of sleep due to fear over not having hot water. I told him I'd pay half the rent of a different place. A hotel. I was not interested in even hearing bed and breakfast. He complied. He got me an ensuite room on cooper. Even had a kitchen! He called me the next day saying they refused a refund. He told them that he sent his young female tenant there and was swarmed by creepy old men like a pack of wolves. So obviously she fled. Totally ripped him off. He said that I never stepped foot in the establishment. They said there were no refunds. Not even an apology or asked if I was okay. I never got the chance to see what the stitch is inside but I didn't feel like getting raped.
