For my best friends wedding, which I was officiating, I had an appointment to have my hair and make up done at Sognatore. Located inside the historic Pennsylvanian, it was nice having the appointment so close to our hotel where we were staying and at the same place as the wedding venue. For my make up, Nikki did a tremendous job and was very attentive to my concerns. I don't usually wear a lot of make up so I was thankful that she appreciated and reflected that in her work. For my hair, since I knew how windy it was going to be on the day of the wedding at the venue, I was thankful that the stylist was able to replicate a low, loose bun with enough structure and support to withstand the windy weather. I hadn't had my hair cut in almost two years and I suddenly got to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore. I had family pictures that week so I tried to find someplace that would fit into my schedule. Sognatore was recommended to me, so I was happy to hear they were able to fit me in. When I entered the salon, I was immediately greeted and offered a drink (I took iced tea). I liked the prompt service, but then was stuck waiting for my appointment to start. I was on a lunch break and had limited time, so once it was 15 minutes past my appointment time, I asked if there was anything they could do to get things going. Thankfully they were able to have someone else shampoo me while my stylist was finishing up. The stylist took the time to hear what I wanted and give her thoughts and suggestions. I really appreciated that because I'm fairly clueless when it comes to beauty related things. While getting my hair done I had a gorgeous view of the city. I loved my hair and how it turned out and, overall, was very pleased with my experience. read more

This salon came as a recommendation from a friend of mine, specifically hair stylist, Jennie. My friend knew I liked my previous salon, but didn't love some of the techniques. Hair stylists break-ups can be hard, but I am so happy I made the move! My first appointment with Jennie set the tone for what was to come. I was greeted right away, asked if I needed anything to drink, given a robe, and got into the chair. Instead of standing behind me, Jennie sat in front of me to talk about my hair, what I wanted, now and long term, and made sure to ask additional questions to make sure she understood what I was asking for and liked. I am obsessed with this salon! I moved to Pittsburgh after living in Boston for 11 years! I had tried many stylists in Boston and worked with the best (and I'm extremely picky!). Sognatore exceeds it all. You must must must work with Lauri!!! She is a coloring genius. Perfect mix of up to date technique and style while looking completely subtle and natural. I have never been so happy with my color and cut! If I was ever forced to move from Pittsburgh there is no doubt I would fly back just to get my hair done by Laurie. Meh. I'm a guy, I've got a short haircut. Nothing fancy -- short on the sides and back, an inch on top. Pretty easy in MY opinion. The stylist "didn't do" clipper cuts, even though that's what I requested for the sides -- it's really the only way to get the sides short. Instead she went with scissors and a comb. Took 3x longer, and the result was a mess....a big strip of hair down the back that was probably twice the length of the sides. The top wasn't even and was kind of a mess. I won't be back. read more

Absolutely outstanding experience!! I went to nearly every salon in the downtown area searching for a stylist that would color my hair red. Every stylist would inevitably refuse to do it because red was "too unpredictable." Dejected, I was debating on going back to my last salon where I had less than a positive experience or trying this place based on a male friend's recommendation. I was hesitant, knowing that men and women's hair were different. I wanted much more than a $26 trim and the relationship a woman has with her stylist is quite personal. Jennie got me in her chair and told me she'd not only color my hair red but was really excited about doing it!! She needed minimal direction and gave me the edgy cut I wanted in record time (I was in and out in less than 2hrs). She was upbeat, perky and really a great person to be around. My hair looks fantastic and I started getting compliments from other women getting their hair done before I even left the salon. At $145, it was the most I've ever spent for a cut and color (pretip) and I've been getting it colored professionally for a while. But honestly, for the entire experience, it was well worth it. Jennie knows what she's doing with color, products, a straight razor and shows a great knowledge of current styles. If you're looking for a new salon, I would absolutely recommend this location. The staff was very friendly and chatty and offered tea, water, wine or coffee. Nothing but positive experiences to be had here! Oh and a GREAT perk: you can book your appointment online anytime. I work nights right now and 2am was the only spare time I had to book. It was so easy! While I believe they take walk ins, I would definitely recommend booking a consultation first since its so easy to do it from their website. read more

I really love this place. I'm sure I'll update as I continue my patronage, but I'm so happy with Sognatore. First of all, I was roughly an hour late to my scheduled appointment, which I was able to book online. I love being able to book online and having a good idea of the prices, which Sognatore offers. Unfortunately Sognatore is located within the Pennsylvanian. I had never been to the Pennsylvanian and the parking was confusing to say the least. I went around and around the building to no avail. It really didn't help that there was a Chainsmokers concert and a Pirates game all going on around the same time. So if you read my review, you have to park in front of the Pennsylvanian by entering the lot through a sign that says "Buses Only". Don't worry I'm pretty sure the sign is just a deterrent for the general traffic. Sognatore is also on the 10th floor. So after driving around for an hour, you'd think I'd have a pretty negative review, but that's just the point! The actual salon is great enough that the hassle was worthwhile, plus I now know that my future trips won't have the same issues. My stylist was willing to almost completely revamp my hair. The shampoo, conditioner, and other products they used were all top notch and felt wonderful. I went in completely unhappy with my overly long hair and my stylist was actually willing to cut a significant amount off. By no means were they scissor happy, they just very clearly were interested in making me happy and I was! I felt like my stylist took time to make me feel comfortable, they completely took away the stress I had in struggling to find the place, they took time to really understood what issues I was having and what I wanted, and they really took their time to deliver amazing results. I think my impression of Sognatore started even before I walked in the door. When I first called the salon to make an appointment, the woman bent over backwards to get my schedule to fit me in anywhere possible. We scheduled for the following week, but then immediately called back to schedule me for the following day. The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that the parking lot is SUPER confusing. I went up the wrong side of the road, then went down to the lease only parking, then had to back up and finally park. That being said, it won't detract from my opinion. I've been going to various salons in the Pittsburgh area, and have never found one that I've fallen in love with until now. Laurie did WONDERS on my hair! I told her my concerns and even went in to cut in bangs in my hair, for the first time since I was a child... She knocked it out of the park! All of the staff was very friendly and genuine. Sean was my stylist and he did an amazing job. I showed him a picture of what I was looking for and he made it happen. He was happy to walk me through every step and ask what I wanted or if I was happy with it before moving forward. He even made some suggestions for the future but was not pushy at all! He showed me all the tricks he used to style my hair and explained it in very easy to understand terms. All the while he was doing my hair he was talking to me like we were old friends. I was staying at the Pennsylvanian in Pittsburgh for a business trip, so it pleased me that there was a place for me to get a haircut in the same building. Jeanie did a great job on my hair. She offered me a robe, so that my hair would not devour my clothes. My stylist took time to cut my hair the way I wanted it and I could not be happier with the end result. The view from my chair outlooking the window was a sight to behold. The cleanliness of a salon is high on my list of priorities and Sognatore passed that test. The price for a men's haircut is $26, so it is rather steep for some. Sognatore is closed Sunday & Monday. I would also recommend making a reservation. read more
