The best furniture store I have visited in Richmond. We went there after touring 5 other furniture stores and loved it. We actually designed our sofa and chair ourselves with the help of Sunny and Ed. Received with 5 weeks. I couldn't believe it. I'm just so happy with our purchases from there. We sent a friend there also and him and his wife bought furniture that same day. It is a small family owned business which I love to support. I'm not a very smooth writer but I had to post this because I do rely on others so I felt like It was my duty to pay it back to others. I bought a couch from this family owned business 19 years ago and that couch held up like the day I bought it. The owner and both his kids (adults ) work there and they are the nicest people!!!!! It's just so darn nice to go k to a place where they generally look forward to helping you. They are so knowledgeable about the products where it comes from and they do support American made products. You know I could go on and on about how great this place is but do yourself a favor if you're looking for a sofa rugs any kind of home Decore it looks small from the outside but once you go inside you'll see it is packed full with couches that you can try and sit on and you have a ton of fabrics that you can choose to pick and put on the couch. So do yourself a favor it looks small on the outside but it's packed full of awesome customer service and really really good prices and like I said the couches that they get are from well-known made companies. I was greeted by a gentlemanly sales guy who directed me to the perfect sectional, based on my abstract description of what I was searching for. While the couch would be perfect for my space, it's a little pricier than I'm hoping to spend. Looked high quality and I'm sure it's worth the extra. The store is jam packed with furniture. We purchased a sleep sofa, recliner sofa and a chair from them about 6 years ago. Ed was very friendly and helpful, so we returned to purchase a recliner and per Ed was the best on the market with the best warranty, after about 18 months the seat cushion had collapsed and was very uncomfortable. Called the store and he would only replace the cushion and I had to pay for install which I agreed. Their rep. would never call me back to schedule the work and Ed did not seem to care and was not interested in helping in any way, nice customer support. The Sofa Design team has gone above and beyond in impeccable service. We wanted to purchase an attractive and (most importantly) durable sofa and settee that would last our family a long time. We patiently looked for years. When I saw the simple and streamlined sofa I had been looking for, I was excited. When the Ed's informed me on how well it was constructed I was even more excited. On top of that, they're made in N. Carolina! Sold. I had a large assortment of fabrics to choose from and I almost went with a stunning fabric that me and my husband loved but we were informed that although it would look beautiful, it's not going to hold up for years. We ended up choosing the most durable fabric the factory uses and we couldn't have been happier. DO NOT BUY FURNITURE FROM THIS STORE! I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS STORE HAS ANY GOOD RATINGS AT ALL. The owner / manager Ed Barden and his daughter Sonni Barden will gaslight you if they mess up the order or if something is delivered that is not correct. My good friend just received her new living room set that she spent over $6.000.00 on at Sofa Design. She has the receipt for every item she ordered. One of the chairs arrived in the wrong color. There were also problems with the pillows. One pillow arrived torn and two others were not the appropriate pillows for the set and the order. Ed Barden and his daughter, without presenting any paperwork, has been gaslighting my friend saying she came in the next day and changed the color of her chair. My friend has had to argue multiple times that NO - she is not crazy and NO she did not come into the store and change the chair color the next day. Mr. Barden has been misogynistic telling my friend that he has had several woman customers which have done the same thing - that is change their mind about a piece of furniture only to apologize later. Mr. Barden has not the same thing - that is change their mind about a piece of furniture only to apologize later. Mr. Barden has not been able to produce any paperwork showing the order change. He finally relented after lecturing my friend for extended periods, saying he would order the chair cushions in the color she had requested as if it was going to be a gift. He gave her a piece of paper without writing more than her first name. No other information was written on the form stating the order, delivery information or otherwise. That was 2 weeks ago - no chair cushions or pillows have yet arrived. The level of deceit and gaslighting here is shocking. Especially in light of the fact that there was a coordinating witness friend accompanying her and having all supporting evidentiary paperwork including pictures of the fabrics she picked from a display laid out by Mr. Barden at the store, and all paper receipts of her order. My friend has been talked down to, lied to directly and in the presence of her friend (who was a witness to the entire transaction), gaslighted and been subjected to several lectures by Mr. Barden about her forgetfulness with orders from him not to interrupt his prolonged ramblings. The furniture received is nice quality, but a disappointment without the appropriate pillows and matching chair. BUYER BEWARE! 1st experience: Loved how knowledgeable the salesman was (owners son), but they are rather pricey (won't haggle), although quality was great. Found my favorite sofa here. 4/5 star experience 2nd experience: Returned to discuss purchasing the sofa, yet couldn't find anyone in the store to talk to. 15 minutes later, I had to search the back room for an employee who started off saying that she didn't know what she was doing bc she's part-time, & to come back 4 days later. She didn't know anything about the product, but interrupted me & called her boss to see if it was OK I was taking a pic of the sofa tag for the dimensions. She was talking about me (20 ft away) like I was a criminal, & my gf wanted to leave before she even got off the phone bc of how unprofessional she was. Stopped in today after several weeks of looking at other 'big name' stores. Don't waste your time at other places -- you can spend the exact same amount of money here and get far better quality (and American made!) My fiancee worked in the furniture business some years ago in NC, and he and the owner chatted for a while... it's clear this family owned business knows their stuff. They sell really well known and high quality brands, and have a great selection with tons of options. I loved their fabric choices, and we're looking for leather, and they sell high quality leather items. We didn't purchase a sofa yet, but we did pick up a gorgeous side table that was on clearance. My husband and I went to several big box stores looking for a leather sofa. We decided not to buy from the big box stores because we wanted to buy made in America. We decided to go to Sofa Design because their sofas are supposed to be made in USA. We explained about going to previous stores but didn't buy because of above reason. We looked around but wanted to check out one other place before making our purchase. We went back on 7/22 to Sofa Design to make our final decision. We chose a sofa and my husband asked who was the maker and where it was made. We were told it was made by Craft Master in Tennessee. Three weeks later when the sofa was delivered, I was adjusting the cushions and looking at the labels. It was manufactured for Craft Master and made in CHINA. I felt so deceived after telling them we wanted to buy an American made sofa. I called on Saturday and went back to the store on Monday and recapped that we had told them we wanted American made and were told it was made in Tennessee. I was basically told they would never have told us it was made in Tennessee and felt they didn't have to tell us it was made in China unless we had asked. I feel this was very deceitful on their part. There was never a word of regret or anything concerning the fact we had been deceived. They designed a sectional to fit my small living room in 1994. They also recommended their scottchgard fabric protection, which has done an unbelievable job of protecting the fabric from multiple spills, and has kept it looking new for years. The sofa still looks good and is still comfortable, but the recliner if finally worn out. They are very passionate about the quality of their product, and meeting their customers' requirements and expectations. We had been in virtually every furniture store in the Richmond area when Sofa Design came up in our search. We weren't crazy about the quality of the furniture in the other stores and we had a tight budget. Ed did an outstanding job of keeping us in our price range, showing us options that made sense for our lifestyle (durable, we have 2 kids) and not pressuring us a bit. We left very impressed with how these owners do business. All of their furniture is 100% American made and the quality far outshines the big name stores. Ed is an excellent salesman; attentive without being overbearing, and incredibly knowledgeable. I had traveled all over Richmond searching for my first adult sofa; Sofa Design had the best overall selection of any store I visited, and the pieces were of superior quality (for example, all of the sofa cushions are fully covered in fabric and removable so they can be flipped). I purchased a sectional with recliner 21 years ago. I am still using it, and it still looks relatively new. The cushion in the recliner has seen better days, but it is still comfortable. The staff at Sofa Design were very careful to ensure all my requirements were met including size, location of recliner, dimensions, fabric (inside dog) etc. The staff was always very professional, and they take pride in their service and product.
