Definitely, I recommend Jan. She had a large sectional and another sofa made for me and I'm going to have a chair and ottoman redone soon.

We stumbled across a Jan Bixler ad in the SB News-Press classifieds when the paper was still worth having, and so glad we did! This was 2003. Now, 20 years later, my two sons are grown, so it is just my husband (with two dogs and two cats) who slouches, eats and watches television on our beautiful yet practical microfiber sectional. It has held up remarkably well over time and I was so pleased to find out that our cats preferred their scratch pads to this fabric. Recently I looked up Jan's design studio, as a classmate and I had been discussing sofas and where to get one around here. I was so pleased to see that she is still in Carpinteria! Yay! I have had my new couches from Jan for 9 months now. They are white slip covered couches and I have dogs. I have washed these a few times, according to Jan's instructions and they come out PERFECTLY every single time. I have spilled both red wine, chocolate and just this past weekend, my friend fell and didn't realize her knee was bleeding and spent a good hour on my white couch. Well, I washed it and once again, it came out looking BRAND NEW- blood out of a white couch! I have been buying furniture from Jan for over 15 years and I have zero complaints. The slipcover for my chair came out AMAZING. I am so happy with the fabric and the quality of the slipcover. It was better than I had expected given the detail I was wanting. Do not buy a couch from this woman!!! She sells very cheap furniture and she delivered the wrong couch to me and refused to take it back. As well I washed the slipcovers once and they all fell apart. When I took her to small claims court she out and out lied to the judge. She said I wanted a big couch because I had a big boyfriend. I am 5" tall and stressed to her I wanted a small couch. I ordered a smaller couch from her warehouse but she had them deliver a couch that was 5" taller than I expected. When she orders your furniture she doesn't put the dimensions on your order form so it's your word against hers and in court you have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. I am stuck with a $1800 couch I never ordered with slip covers that are so cheap they all fell apart. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS WOMAN!!! You will regret it. I talked to 2 interior designers in the area who have told me she is not a reputable person to do business with and have had other customers who were not happy with her couches. STAY AWAY!!! read more

What a disappointment. I paid a grand total of $2246.40 for what essentially amounted to an inferior product, an inconvenience, and an appalling show of verbal abuse. I bought a custom-made sofa and ottoman. Upon initial consultation, the owner, Jan, seemed friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable. I felt confident about my purchase and pleased to be supporting a local business. Unfortunately, the sofa started to show signs of failure after about a month; fabric began tearing at the seams, over-filled back cushions were feeling increasingly more awkward and uncomfortable to sit against, there was fabric puckering, and fabric breaking to expose the plastic cords in the welting. I covered the sofa with a throw in an attempt protect it until I could deal with getting it repaired. During this time, the sofa fabric began to pill with the transferred fabric from the throw. Granted, I waited until these issues became more than I could delay any longer, about 10 months. Mea culpa. Regardless, I called Jan to explain the situation, and she agreed to fix the sofa, though she blamed the pilling on my use of the throw. Whatever the culpability is with that, this exchange is where her good manners would end. Next time I spoke with Jan was when she called to inform me that the repaired sofa was ready for delivery, which should have been great news, yet her tone was curiously hostile. All at once, she unleashes this bizarre diatribe of ludicrous accusations. She outright blamed me of having "abused" the sofa. She included an accusation that I had been sleeping on it regularly (also false, but what difference should sleeping on it make). Still unprovoked, she went on about how, in all her years of experience, she had never encountered a quality issue with that fabric. The clear insinuation that it must have been my fault was not lost on me. Such utter nonsense was an outrageous and insulting thing to hear. Most shocking was that as soon as I began to question her, she simply hung up. I called back. When I asked for an explanation and an apology for her absurd accusations, her response was as ugly and confrontational as anything I can remember experiencing. In the midst of this, how especially galling it was that her tack was to spin this entire incident to appear as if it were she doing me favor by fixing her deficient merchandise. As a professional, not to mention a decent person, she should be completely ashamed of herself. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. Besides a level of quality to match the price, you deserve accountability and respect from a company that truly stands behind their product. read more

I have written about my gorgeous sofa when I purchased it - how impressed I was with Jan's service and the quality of the sofa. Well, now I needed to wash the slipcovers and to be cautious I called Jan to confirm just how to wash them. She gave very simple instructions and I could not be happier! Interesting negative review before this one. My experience dealing with this business has been pretty positive. I have ordered three couches, a large chaise and an oversized chair and footstool from Jan Bixler in the past 8-10 years. All of these pieces still look great and the slip covers are quality and have been washed numerous times according to her instructions and held up very well. In one situation the custom pillows I ordered were not to her satisfaction and she insisted on sending them back to the factory to be re-done. I was pleased with that. One of the slip covers on the chairs seemed too big and she stopped by my home in Thousand Oaks and took it with her and had it altered so it fit better. I will say that my sister purchased a chair from her that was in the warehouse. It looked new and perfect, but I think the seat cushion was sub-standard because immediately it began to sag. Since I haven't done business with Jan in several years it's difficult to rate her presently. I hope this is just an isolated incident. My furniture is great quality and has held up very well. It appears that some of her business practices have changed. I don't recall signing a contract that says she is not responsible in any way for the end product. I have purchased two sofas from Jan over the last 10 years, and both look brand new. I have washed my slip covers so many times it makes me giggle to think how long I have had them. Jan is great she listens to what you want and what you like. Her fabric choices are amazing and the quality of furniture is mind blowing, who has a couch for 10 years, and mine is WHITE and it still looks brand new. I am making another appointment with Jan this year go get chairs and I look forward to seeing what she has. I just received my slip covered sofa & I LOVE it, its beautiful just like the one I wanted from pottery barn at 1/2 the price!!! Actually I think the quality is better and I can wash the slip covers at home which will save me $150 to dry clean them! My experience with Jan was completely positive, starting with the first conversation. She's good at what she does; her comments about color & style turned out to be right on. But the thing that really impressed me was her patience. I kept going back to the shop to tweak the design and she always helped. After 4 or 5 changes I finally ordered and when the couches arrived I knew I'd made a mistake with the height of the back cushions. I emailed her a couple of photos and she came over the next day to see for herself. We agreed on a new design and two days later she drove to the factory with one of the couches for a rebuild of all four cushions. Ten days later I've got two solid pieces with the right color, texture and profile. Couldn't be happier. read more

I recently had a very positive experience with Sofa Collection/ Jax Bixler. I recently moved to SB from L.A. and wanted a new sofa for my new home. I did some initial shopping at Pottery Barn and found the exact sofa I wanted; however, shortly after shopping at Pottery Barn, I found on Jan's ads. I contacted her and we set up a meeting. What I like about Jan is that she meets with you 1:1. She spends time understanding exactly what you want and explains-in great detail- exactly what she can deliver. She showed me several different options and I left her show room very happy with her advice and my selection (which matched what I would've selected from PB). - Approx. 1 week later, my sofa arrived (also a BIG PLUS... pottery barn would've taken at 4-6 weeks). Seemed impossible, but I loved the sofa even more in my home than when I picked it out at the show room. - I actually ran into one hiccup. After my sofa was delivered, I noticed a small, light stain on the front of it (nothing major at all; could've even happened during the delivery process). I called Jan immediately and she was incredibly helpful and understanding. She presented several options: 1) since I had stain guard on my sofa, could I take a wet rag and attempt to gently remove the stain? 2) if that didn't work, Jan offered to take the sofa slip covers herself and have them cleaned or 3) she offered to fully replace the slip covers. After talking with her, I hung up, took a wet cloth and gently wiped the stain. It came out immediately, which pleased me tremendously. However, I was also pleased with the lengths Jan was willing to go to ensure I was completely happy with my purchase and to correct a very minor error. When I purchased my sofa from her, Jan stated that she stands behind her work and when I had an minor issue, she kept that promise. *One additional note: I have a little Bichon who likes to spend his time lounging on the sofa. When I mentioned this to Jan (who also has dogs), she suggested I purchase an extra piece of fabric to use as a daily cover for my sofa (the fabric would cover the sofa and be made of the same exact fabric as the slip cover). This would allow my dog to spend all the time he likes lounging on the sofa (protected by the matching piece of fabric) without me having to worry that he may be getting my brand new sofa a little dirty with his sweet little paws. When I have guests, I simply remove the extra piece of fabric and reveal my beautiful sofa. This idea is GENIUS and one I not only will use for future sofa purchases, but one I have passed on to other dog owners. read more

Sofa was okay but I'd rather spend the higher prices instead of dealing with Jan - she's CRAZY! she has no problem snapping at you and getting in your face! She doesn't take responsibility for anything so make sure the sewer what you get is the one you want if there's any corrections that need to be done you have to eat it. I contacted Jan Bixler through the Sofa Collection advertisement and it was my best experience in sofa shopping after months of searching. Jan carefully guided me on size and fabric choices. She welcomed my designer into the project and the work Jan did for us was most gratifying. Not only did I get a beautiful white sofa, but I also had Jan order a complementing side chair. Her fabric selection is enormous and the factory work is exceptional. When I decided to make slight changes in the small pillows, Jan came to my home to determine that the requested sizes would work. The process has been so successful that now my wing chair reupholstery will be turned over to Jan and her experts. Past furniture selections have fallen short by comparison with the service and expertise at the Sofa Collection and Jan's knowledge. Prices are also better than the competition.
