Society is a charming candle shop in the Bishop Arts District! They have candles covering every space available in the shop. This is not a large shop and it was a little tight navigating around the space. The candles smelled very good. The service was good. We had a question for what appeared to be a pack of matches. But, we were enlightened to find out that they were actually incense, so when you lit the match it provided scent in the room. I thought the cost was on the higher side. But, when you are in a small business, you are paying for the artists services. The decor was artsy and mystic. I would definitely go back and check out new candles and their scents. read more

I remember the first time I walked past Society, and the delicious scent of the candles drew me in. The first candle I purchased was a Fort Worth candle, and I have been a loyal customer ever since. The Fort Worth, Dallas, and Oak Cliff candles are my favorite! The throw of these candles is phenomenal since they practically fill up our entire home. I also love the other candle brands that they carry, and the staff at this location are always friendly and welcoming. Be sure to sign up for their emails since they have different specials throughout the year. You will not want to walk out of this place without bringing something home. Trust me! read more

This is easily one of the best smelling shops I've ever entered. The minute I opened the door the great scent just drew me into the shop. Upon entering there were candles, candles and more candles. I never realized there were so many candle makers. After making a couple of stops into the shop I decided I was finally going to make a purchase. As fate would have it I could not decide between two different scented candles. The staff was very helpful in answering questions (I'm a novice when it comes to candles). I asked what felt like a 1001 and questions the staff remained super friendly and extremely patient. And as importantly, they are not the pushy, sales-person type. As I debated my purchase, not once did I feel I was being pushed one way or the other. Needless to say, I couldn't decide between the two so I bought them both. This is just what I need; another interest to explore. Lol! In addition to candles I remember seeing scented oils and incense. There are other decorating items in the shop. Unfortunately I have not checked them out as I always get stuck smelling the candles. One final note to make that speaks volumes of Society and their customer service; a friend who was with me also bought a candle. At another stop she sat the bag on a table. Someone accidentally bumped the table causing the bag to fall onto the floor. Yes, you guessed correctly, it resulted in a broken candle. We stopped back by Society and explained what happened and without question they replaced it; no additional charge. How is that for service? If you are a candle junkie like me, this is nirvana. They sell things other than candles, too - incense, sage, matches. I love both locations equally, (there is one in Preston Center, too)! Both have a strong apothecary vibe that I dig. Candles are pricey, but the quality and scent intensity make it so worth it! Every time I stop in the service is friendly, helpful and efficient. My favorite candles from there are: -Any of the Texas Collection, but the Fort Worth is my hands-down favorite (think leather meets flowers, it just works) -Jackson Vaughn Peony - the perfect feminine floral scent -Any Kobo chandle My to-try list are the blackbird incense and the proprietary collection. The candles are great and the space is well curated but every time I try to go they are closed...if you can't have the store staffed for your listed operating hours then lessen the days/hours you're open. This has now happened to me 3 times and I've given up. It's very frustrating to drive 25 minutes and look for parking only to have the doors locked and no one in sight. The two times they have actually been open the people working were very uninterested and salty. read more

Tried shopping today for items I needed, but they didn't clearly want my money or business, since they never unlocked the front door. There was an employee that set out and watered plants then went back in and locked the door. Website hours say 11am, I tried the door at 1130am, called twice and nothing. I drove away at 1207pm. Bad for business, no sign on the door, nothing! I'll go elsewhere. They wasted my time today. read more

Absolutely terrifying, we were watching a movie and the candles flame got out of control. We couldn't even put the flame out. Extremely dangerous we needed to use a fire extinguisher. Thank goodness we were able to put the fire out. Could have burned our house down. Moral of the story please don't buy these candles. read more

The shop is super small, take your time and absorb every square inch. The ambiance of this establishment is so different than a traditional candle shop but yet, so comfortable. Wonderfully unique selection unlike so many "shabby chic" candle store-wannabes - this one takes the crown! Their products have a wide variety of "burn hours" with candles up to 90 hours! This small store front specializes in the local gift that will keep giving. Scents that are so beautiful, I keep telling myself I'll buy one for every room. Though the price can be high, these are 90 hours + burning candles and the design of each is a perfect gift for someone deserving. This isn't a spot to pick up a handful of unscented votives or a perfunctory hostess staple, no sir. Herbally and florally perfumed candles rest under glass domes - allowing you to steal a whiff of each flavor individually by simply lifting the covering (and simultaneously keeping other scents from overloading your olfactory). Wow! This place is candle heaven! They have literally every scent imaginable. I bought a clean scent that smells subtly like freshly done laundry and spa water with cucumber. My husband bought a bourbon leather candle so his office can smell like leather bound books and rich mahogany. The associates were very helpful and gave us the history which was neat to hear about. The shop makes its own line of candles in addition to carrying a variety of other upscale brands. I feel like a fancy candle in a neutral scent is always the perfect gift, so I love that their bags are beautiful (no gift wrapping required!). Wide range of sizes and prices available. Come in here just to get high off of sniffing all of the candles. They truly have some unique one of a kind items in here for home décor as well. It's a bit on the high end price wise but if you're a candle lover sometimes you know you have a pay a little bit more for the quality and intensity of the fragrance. They have their house selection but they also have a well-curated collection from other vendors. I love their aesthetic and their prices are reasonable. My GO TO candles are Guy Earl from their Jeremiah Jo Collection and Pickwick & Co.'s Tamboti Wood. I love experimenting with new and different candles, too. Society also introduced me to Boy Smells candles. I wish they still carried it. In any case, this is a great place to pick up a candle or just fun, random, or beautiful knick knacks. read more

The most vast and diverse collection of boutique candles I've ever seen in a retail store. Every candle that I have gotten from Society has lasted months upon months and smells incredible. Very strong fragrance will fill up even the largest of rooms very quickly. I am a fan of the Jackson Vaughn lines they carry as well as Kobo and a few others. They have candle snuffers and wick trimmers as well as all kinds of oddities through the store. If you're in a pinch for a gift, they also have cards now. Used to come here all the time but had a weird experience where the only person working told me to "Wrap it up" so she could take a restroom break with no other explanation. I already had candles picked out and waiting at the front counter and was kind of in shock over the comment, so I purchased them and left. Emailed the owners because it didn't sit well and I would want to know if that happened in my business. They apologized and asked for my address to send a gift, but I never received anything. The candles are great and I'd had many great experiences there before this, but I feel uncomfortable with how I was treated and won't be back. read more

I wandered into Society while exploring Bishop Arts, and was immediately impressed by how beautifully decorated and utilized the incredibly small shop was. As I spoke with the woman working there - maybe an owner - it all made sense. Not only do they sell phenomenal candles, they are an interior design service. No wonder they did such a great job decorating the small space. The candle selection is fantastic, and I was thrilled to see them selling Sydney Hale candles which are made in my part of Virginia. They also had their own lineup of handmade candles with really unique scents. The only reason I didn't buy any is because I had to fly home the next day, and didn't want to worry about it breaking in transit. Never ever did I think I'd see so many specialty candles in one place!! I love this little shop, I give it 4 stars only because it's a little bit cramped and I've never been greeted by an employee. However, I do like that I have some freedom to just kind of do my own thing with being pushed to buy. The candle options are endless, the atmosphere is cute and cozy and inviting. I love that they have the domes you can smell instead of the whole candle. It's a bit pricy but they are all soy candles and they will last a long time and they are specialty, this isn't bath and body works! My favorite part, THE MATCHBOXES!! If you have a chance, definitely pop into Society and spend some time sniffing those glass bells. Yes, sniffing those glass bells - each candle is covered with a glass cover so you won't be overwhelmed by too many scents are once. Just pick up the glass bell and stick your nose right in there to smell the candle it was covering. There are so many scents to chose from so definitely take your time. It doesn't matter what kind of scents you like, you'll probably be able to find something that tickles your fancy in Society. Musky, piney, floral; there's a great "laundry day" candle, too. I would say this is definitely a boutique so be prepared to pay a boutique price, but there are some smaller candles for ~$10 if you're not into paying fifty bucks for a candle. read more

Great unique store with a friendly shop keeper. Each candle has a story and a unique scent. The interior decor is also on point. I enjoyed looking around and would have loved to purchase a candle but the price point was a bit high... $26 for a medium sized candle, which I just couldn't justify. This store is incredible! I purchased several amazing candles from here on my visit. The warm and cozy winter fragrances are my favorite. Living in AZ, the FIRESIDE and Winter Scents really make it seem like you are in a cozy cabin deep in the Colorado snow, even when you are really in 115 degree heat. I purchased two for myself and one for a gift, which the store shipped for me. It arrived beautifully packaged in just a few days. The store is also magnificent to look at.
