There is plenty of parking out front. Two lines, one for appointments and one for walk-ups. I accidentally stood in the walk-up line (no sign) until I noticed a sign across the way for appointments. Security guard asks questions like name and if you have any weapons, then leads you inside. Metal detector then wait for your name to be called. They have a screen with window numbers and customer numbers, but it didn't seem to update. They just called my name and which window, like the DMV. The young lady at my window was terrific, very friendly and personable. I needed to change my address which you can't do online or over the phone. She seemed surprised that this could only be done in person. Yes, it doesn't make sense to me either, but probably for security? After updating my address, she offered to print out a current copy of my social security statement which was very helpful. Overall it only took about 15-20 minutes to get in and out. I definitely recommend making an appointment although I did it a month ago, so if you need something faster, you may just need to wait in the walk-in line. read more

Horrible! Don't bother calling if you need to speak to someone at the office. I called at 9am and after 15 minutes of waiting a rep answers from TORRANCE! they can't help me because I need to speak to my local (Long Beach) office. I try again. This time wait 25 minutes. Another person picks up from A DIFFERENT OFFICE. I said I have to speak to someone at Long Beach. She said when they can't pick up they transfer it to a different office. She tried to help me get connected to Long Beach. Waited 40 minutes and someone picks up from THOUSAND OAKS. I said to this person it's ridiculous that Long Beach is transferring to other locations because other locations can't help. When you are told you have to speak with your local office, you have to speak with your local office. Just waisting the day being put on hold and resolving nothing. They need to go back to the old way. If it's too busy the recording will say call back and the call is disconnected. That will help everyone not waisting their time to talk to someone who can't help them because it's not your local office. read more

Located in Long Beach, this Social Security office is one we pass by all the time when driving on Long Beach Blvd. Since most folks are involved with Social Security in one form or another, my wife and I knew we would need to stop in at some point. So with her mom coming to California, we figured it was a good time to stop into the local office. There were two waiting lines outside: one on the south side for folks with appointments and one on the north side for folks without. The line was for getting through security, and the security folks were prioritizing the people with appointments to make sure they made their times. We waited about 25 minutes outside, and then were allowed to go in (one at a time). Security is similar to airport (everything out of pocket, person going through metal detector). Once through, the people with appointments are asked to wait on the carpet to the side, and are called one at a time. This line moves fast. The rest of us used a kiosk to state the purpose of our visit (of course, our exact need wasn't an option so we chose something similar) and was given a ticket. Like the DMV, the ticket consists of a letter and a number. It is a large waiting room, and after a few minutes, we found some seats to sit. There are monitors stating the number they are serving, along with an announcement. In between, there were announcements stating that beginning in 2025, this location would only service appointments, and there would be very long waits for walk-ins. That turned out to be the case...we waited more than 2 hours after we got our ticket, and there was no indication that we had made any progress....the numbers are not called in order, but instead skipped around...numbers after us were called. The only reason I can think of why, is that this is one way to weed out the folks who don't have urgent business, and keep the people who would wait at all costs...but all it does is kick the can down the line. In the meanwhile, the no-appointment line outside continued to be very long outside as we left. The results were very long waits, and in our case, the inability to complete the task we wanted to do. But in our case, we were warned and now know more about the process. And for the most part, all parties were subdued and nobody was getting agitated. When we did get home, we tried to make an appointment via the given phone number. But with the backup, the phone number wasn't even taking messages...instead just giving a recorded message saying to call back later, and just hanging up. We'll just have to keep trying. It will be interesting to see how the process adjusts as the year goes on. Hopefully they can make the process to get an appointment more accessible (make it on-line like the DMV), and continue to move more things to self-service on-line. One thing that will never return is the ability to walk into the office as an elderly retiree, and get advice to navigate the government maze that is Medicare, Social Security, and OPM. You need to know exactly what you need. read more

The SS Employees do their job well given their limit resources. Hard working people interacting with so many people, some not very nice, in their daily encounters. Employees try hard to help, but they can only do so much! It's the antiquated system!! Nothing to do with the workers. They're human beings, just like you and me! They changed drastically. They no longer take you in without an appointment and encourage you call. When you call, you can stay on the phone for literal hours and in my experience, no one ever answered even with the 120 minute wait time to set an appointment. Truly disappointed. read more

Lastly, someone will check you in before you enter their clean spacious waiting area. Less than 25 minutes later, Mrs. Garcia helped me with what I needed. And just like that, I'm a whole new woman with a new last name! I'm surprised how quick this process was and how clean, quick and efficient this place operates. Thank you! I know that Social Security generally gets bad reviews so there's no point in just adding into that... but my experience was so atrocious that I have to write this. PARKING & LOCATION // Parking is not too terrible if you come at the right time. That may be the best thing about this place. The location itself is in this tiny plaza but there is construction happening EVERYWHERE around here. It is almost impossible to get here without the traffic. WAIT // The wait here sucks. Everyone knows this. We got here around 9:30am and we didn't get inside until 11am. The wait is horrible and it is clear that no one who works here even cares about that. SERVICE // The service here is also terrible. I understand that Social Security isn't an exciting area, but it is crucial to many people's lives. The workers here are aware of the long wait and frustrating process but no one seems to care. OVERALL // 0 stars It is amazing how terrible this place is. read more

Went to the SSA Office on a Wednesday morning. Here's how it went: 8:45 arrived (15 min before opening). 15 people in the outside wrap around-the-building line ahead of me. 9:00 they opened the doors and the armed guards started letting people in about 4 or 5 at a time (about 30 people in the line at that time). Had to pass through a metal detector a lot like an airport screening. 9:10 I was in the building and through the metal detector. I got a number from a machine that asked basic check-in questions. 9:15 I got screened through the check-in window (#1) and went to sit down waiting for my number to be called. 9:20 my number got called and I went up to one of the numbered windows (#7). 9: 30 Paperwork was done. 9:33 In my car heading out (noticed only about 4 people in the outside line at that time). I recently got married and changed my last name, so I needed a new social security card. I printed and completed the necessary forms at home in advance, gathered the required documentation, and arrived at this Social Security location with no appointment. At 9:30am on a Wednesday, the wait to enter was about 30 minutes. Upon entry, your bag is searched and you go through a metal detector. You then use a self serve kiosk to enter your information, and communicate the reason for your visit. The machine prints a receipt with a number, and you wait for it to be called. I waited about 15 more minutes. Ms. Rodriguez was very sweet, and completed the name change in minutes. She told me that my new social security card would arrive in 2 weeks, but it only took 1 week! A nice surprise. I dock one star because this area is pretty scary, and security guards did nothing about the aggressive tweakers outside. I definitely felt unsafe. read more

Yes, I know! I am becoming the fan of this office and its employees. When people treat you right, you need to acknowledge! Here I am acknowledging and giving gratitude. The security officers both are polite and welcoming, of course professional because they are doing their job. Today I had an appointment at 2 pm. I don't know with home. I was on my way and Mr. Cervantes called me to say he was early and happy to do the appointment on the phone. When he realized that I was almost there, he gave me clear instructions where to go and what to do. I took the day off for this appointment and I am glad I did. I came here yesterday to change my address and I did not have an appointment. I arrived late, about 3:00 pm. I read the previous reviews and was dreading it immensely. Parking was fine, no problem finding a parking place. Went inside and through security, the security guards were very pleasant helping to direct me where to go. I waited about 20 minutes before my number was called and I had a very pleasant female worker take my info, can't recall her name but she was a very pretty Latina young lady. The whole experience was a positive one. I was very happy I took care of my business. Horrible experience, just like most other government entities! Almost two hours before I got to speak to someone, and they put me right back in the queue because the employee didn't want to hear any details and didn't have time. I felt like I was treated very poorly and like the employee did not care. The 2nd employee was a bit better, but also felt like he did not want to be bothered by my requests. Shame on you SSA! It's a shame your employees will not go above and beyond and do their jobs! At 8 a.m. there were 20 people in line. By 8:50 a.m., 10 minutes before opening there were about 60 people. There are two armed guards who screen entrants thru a metal detector. They do one person at a time and are very efficient. Most people entered as if it was the first time they'd encountered such a screening, delaying the line considerably as they remove metal objects from their pockets. The screening process is very slow as a result. Plan on standing on line for some time if you arrive late. I had my number called and was assisted by a reasonably pleasant worker and I was out of the the office in under 25 minutes. read more

This was the worst experience. I made an appointment 3 weeks in advance and came early with all my paperwork and 3 questions. The clerk, though friendly, could answer none of the questions. She referred me to an interviewer in the back office and said I would be next up. For the next hour I watched people be taken in ahead of me. When I repeatedly and courteously asked why, I was told the interviewer was busy. When I finally gave up more than 1 hour after my appointment and said I needed to reschedule, the clerk told me to call the 800 number and start all over again. Incredible. There was a Hispanic lady asked around our needs (reasons for the visit). The new shorter hours make the wait long and insufferable! Waited 30 minutes in the hot sun just standing in line to get in. Then after security check, you get your number and start the 3 hr long wait. Oh fun! But wait, there's more! The new shorter hours also make the staff impatient halfway listening to you and halfway god knows where. They are overworked and they showed it. After all of that time they got my info wrong and managed to blame me for the mistake with threatening letters. So I have to go back but trying the Lakewood office next time.
