Great experience today! We arrived at 8:36 and were 4th in line. Although I already filled out forms online and had a confirmation number, we were still required to fill out a paper copy for SSN application (for my kiddo) on the spot. Thankfully it's only one page and I got it done in less than 3 minutes. The guard was serious but helpful, he's doing his job right and perfectly. No mask no entry. No food or drink allowed. I think that's pretty simple. The doors opened promptly at 9am, the lady by the door guided us directly to window #4 and the staff asked a few questions, (so sorry I forgot to ask your name), made photocopies of our passport and birth certification. Quick and painless, walked out the door at 9:14am and ready to start the day! Thank you!

Be prepared before you go. You have to wait outside, with no shade, for quite a while, before going inside to get a number and wait to be served. I was outside for an hour. Wear sunscreen, hat, bring an umbrella, something to sit on if you can't stand for long periods of time, and a bottle of water. In total I was there about 2.5 hours, and that was with 12 people in line ahead of me. I expected to wait but waiting in the heat/sun was rough. Make an appointment if you can, I wasn't able to make an appointment for what I was doing. Once inside there is A/C and waiting is fine. The person helping me only took about five minutes once my number was called.

OK, it's not as bad as you think it might be. We had to settle our parents estate and needed paperwork from SS. The wait wasn't bad and the service clerks were friendly and attentive.

After scheduling my appointment I received a text message with the appointment confirmation of the date and time and a link that allowed me to check in online once I was there. I also received an email reminder. On the day of my appointment I drove into the parking lot, parked, clicked the link that was texted to me and I was checked in and received a DPS ticket number. I then walked in, waited in a line to speak with someone working at the desk. A friendly woman checked my documents, gave me some paperwork to fill out, and then told me to sit and wait in the waiting area. I sat at a table, filled out my paperwork and waited. I waited for about an hour and a half. During my wait several people that worked there came out and made announcements. They were there to help. When they finally called out my number I was relieved that the wait was over. The woman that was working behind the counter was friendly. She checked my documents, and then told me where to stand and took my photo. I paid, she gave me my paperwork and it was done. This process went really fast and took less than 10 minutes. Overall it wasn't a bad experience it was just very time consuming. The appointment time was at 10:40 and I left at 12:20. You will wait a long time before being seen but a positive is that everyone that worked there was friendly and helpful. A side note. Be sure to take hand sanitizer and some sanitizer wipes. I used the women's restroom and they were clean but they didn't have any soap in the dispenser and the large hand sanitizer bottle on the sink was empty. So take something with you to clean your hands just in case.

You may have to schedule it out a few months, so make sure to plan ahead. When you arrive, you sign in on the kiosk with either your name, your phone number, or your confirmation number which is emailed to you. The kiosk generates a number and there are screens in the waiting room to tell you which number they are on. The process moves relatively fast compared to the past, but you should still plan to be there for about an hour. My appointment was at three, I arrived a few minutes early and was out of there around 4 o'clock. The clerk that assisted me was very helpful and friendly. It was an overall successful trip and some pretty good people watching while I waited.

But, there is overpriced housing and the infrastructure that does not meet the need of the current population. Traffic can be crazy based on where you are trying to go. The list can go on. My favorite places for coffee or dining include 1886 Cafe & Bakery, Bouldin Creek Cafe, Casa de Luz, Cosmic in South Austin, Draught House Pub & Brewery, Easy Tiger, Mission Burger, Mozart's Coffee Roasters, Pinthouse Pizza & Brewing, Quack's 43rd Street Bakery, The BE Hive Deli & Market, The Vegan Yacht, and Voodoo Doughnut. My favorite local breweries that I've been to include: The ABGB (Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company), Draught House Pub & Brewery, Jester King, Meanwhile, and Pinthouse. Central Market is the most impressive grocery store I've seen in Austin. These are the high-end locations of the H-E-B chain, which they have one or two of in major Texas cities. As far as country dancing, progressive two-step (travelling counter-clockwise around the dance floor) can be found at Broken Spoke, and Mavericks in Buda. Mercer Dancehall was also known for this, but, unfortunately, they recently closed. Otherwise, you find the stationary, slot-style of partner country dancing at places like Donn's Depot, Jo's Coffee on South Congress, Sagebrush, and The White Horse. It's basically Austin's version of country swing dancing. Although I've enjoyed craft beer at The ABGB, I haven't yet been there during live music, when people dance. However, judging by the size of the dance area, and photos online, it looks like the predominant style of partner dancing is country swing rather than progressive two-step. Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites Austin-University Area is a quality hotel that is reasonably priced, centrally located but off of the beaten path. If you're not used to driverless taxis, Waymo autonomous vehicles are widespread throughout Austin, where they have an exclusive partnership with Uber. Based on my experience at some of the most popular cafes, food truck parks, restaurants, and nightlife in Austin, the patrons are predominantly a younger crowd, in their 20s to 40s. I've written separate reviews for most of the places mentioned above.

Riverside Drive also has the new(ish) murals that have cropped up along the south side of the roadway that celebrate Texas' bluebonnets, butterflies and mockingbirds. The aggravating thing about this thoroughfare is that the lights take forever to change, and many of the intersections come in at weird angles. Have patience, young grasshopper.

This was someone who may or may not have cut off his own hand, then used the nub to serve as the piece de resistance for one twisted practical joke. What parallel am I trying to draw, you may ask, between Mr. P's batshit, "smell of napalm in the morning," one-handed antics and Riverside Drive? Well, have you ever driven down Riverside Dr. at 5:30am? In the fog? Dead sober back from the airport while you are surrounded on all sides by a broken-down truck, a straight-out-of-a-serial-killer-movie van and homeless people wandering itinerantly (but only ghostly shadows so you can't really see them) near your car and the freakin' light WON'T CHANGE TO GREEN WON'T CHANGE TO GREEN OH FUCK I'M GOING TO END UP CHOPPED UP UNDER SOMEONE'S MATTRESS UNTIL THE FERAL CATS FIND ME TWO MONTHS LATER!!
